[VIC] 50% off Frame+Lens @ Specsavers (Northland, Preston, Ringwood, Moonee Ponds & Pacific Werribee)

1300

First ever 50% Off Glasses promotion @Specsavers (I believe discounts don’t usually apply to Lens options)

All Frames above $199: 50% off
All Lens options:
- Anti glare $50, $70 options: 50% off
- All thinning option $120, $180, etc: 50% off

This works super well if you want to get a metal glasses (which is when you need extra thinning the most)

For example, I got my glasses from Ringwood, VIC branch:
My Frame = $249
My Single Focal lens + Anti Glare + Super clear + Ultra thin = $180
Total = $429
Discounted price (50%) = $214.5

For those with Private Health Extras cover, check if your cover limits the amount you can claim for frame and for lenses. For me, my AHM cover provides one flat Optical limit to cover the whole pair of glasses

Edit: Specsavers on Collins st, Melbourne doesn’t have this promotion

  • not on their website? selected stores??

    • I've never seen it before!

    • Is this also for WA?

      • +1

the staff told me this promotion is initiated by Specsavers HQ. But some users reported their local branches do not offer this promotion.

Worth strolling to your local branch and check out over the weekend..

        • Thanks mate.

  • +1

Don't you normally get 2 pairs for the one price? I guess this is good if you only want the one pair. I generally need or want to buy 2 pairs at once. I pretty much need general, computer and sunglasses so I'm going to wait for the polarising deal they usually do or maybe some other deal.

    • +3

Lens options are usually full price, so that's where the bargains are

      • I guess those lens options are expensive and I usually end up getting anti-glare or polarising. I still need more than one pair so I don't think this will end up cheaper for me.

  • +1

If the $70 anti glare is included in the discount, that's pretty good.

Normally they have sales on a basic setup, but then two lenses with the pretty much mandatory anti-glare/anti-scratch at $70 each nullifies the "sale".
Poster doesn't say lens treatments though… so I'd definitely be confirming the discount is on those prior to ordering- as its definitely not normally the case.

    • +1

As far as I know when you fork out for the extra thin lenses it comes with the coatings included. This was true for me when I bought the 2 for 1 but paid for extra thin lenses.

    • Anti glare at $70 was included in my thinning option ($180 in total)

The staff confirmed that all options related to lenses (anti glare, thinning, tinting and etc) are eligible for 50% off

    • +1

Mandatory? I've never opted for anti glare/scratch and I can't say I've ever had issues and I'm not careful with my glasses at all.

      • +2

Mine get scratched within a few months even with the anti-scratch coating..

        • take it back and ask them if it can be replaced

    • -1

The anti-glare coating is included in the lens thinning options because to thin the lens, a higher refractive index material is used and as you increase the refractive index you get more internal reflections and glare. Regarding the "anti-scratch" coating, if there was such a thing I would throw money at someone to coat my car in it. There is only scratch-resistant or hard coatings.

      • Well put jmarr

      • Your car needs something called clear bra

      • +1

We ordered a pair last week and were charged for both High Index Material and Anti Reflective Coating. Are you suggesting that we have been double charged for the coating?

      • +4

You are pointing out semantics, and have otherwise made a useless post.

        Anti-scratch = scratch-resistant.
You knew what I was talking about, but wanted to be smart instead of actually addressing my post in any meaningful way.

You mention anti-glare is included in the lens thinning options, but my point was you still have to pay for it as an additional product when you guys normally offer sales. If a person has a light prescription and doesn't require lens thinning, the anti glare and scratch resistant coating (there we go) is still charged at full price. This is from personal experience as a paying customer during a previous sale of yours.

    For example:
    My Frame = $249
My Single Focal lens + Anti Glare + Super clear + Ultra thin = $180
    Total = $429
    Discounted price (50%) = $214.5
    Health Fund = $220
    Out of Pocket = $0

Hey OP, have you actually done this or is this just what you are planning on. Specsavers are the scum of the optical industry and very dodgy with their supposed deals. I'm guessing this is not the way it will work if you have yet to make a claim.

Your phi extras will also be broken down into frames and lens claim limits which may also change the final oop amount.

    • i noticed i got screwed with my local optom as well in a similar way. brought in my own frames and they charged me $250 and could only claim $50 or something stupid

where can i understand how this breakdown works?

      • +2

It comes down to the health funds and how they determine the amount of extras cover you are eligible for. The local optometrist would have just been abiding by the rules and regulations about claiming to avoid any fraudulent activity.

A lot of the health funds work differently, and extras cover within those companies as well.

It sounds like you might be with a health fund that breaks down costs (BUPA, NIB etc.) and usually, as an example, goes as following:

Total Cost for new lenses in your own frame: $250

        Frame cost: $0
        Lens Cost: $250

Total cost per item allowance allocated by your phi: $250

        Frame cost: $200
        Lens cost: $50

Leaving you with an out of pocket cost of: $200

        Hope that makes sense!

        • it does

so i really should check the breakdown first before shopping around

          • +2

@furythree: Or change your health insurance if you're with Bupa, they're shocking!

            • @buckster: to who?

              • @furythree: You can generally get better value with one of the AHSA health funds (https://www.ahsa.com.au/web/fundlist) - depends on your individual needs.

HIF has been pretty good in the past, some of the occupation specific ones can be great if you're eligible.

                • @buckster: they all look/read industry/career specific. Can anyone join them?

                  • @furythree: Some listed yes, some listed no. Aus unity/hif/HCF free to anyone. Sometimes you can be eligible if a close relative is employed in a certain field for others.

        • That is wrong if with NIB or Medibank. Nib does not have sub limits for either frame or plain lens. NIB would cover $250 for lens as long as it is standard lens and not high index/coatings.

Total Cost for new lenses in your own frame: $250

          Frame cost: $0
          Lens Cost: $250

    • +1

Interesting that the discounted price in the above example shows that the phi benefit is greater than the total (final) cost - which means that they calculated the phi benefit at the full price, then deducted the 50% off. Surely when you actually pay by the HICAPS system at Specksavers it will apply the phi to each item separately by code at the final price for that item.

Many of the Phi's will unlikely cover things like anti-reflective coating etc.

The list of the HICAPS codes for optical is here - https://www.hicaps.com.au/content/dam/hicapsrwd/Documents/It…

This was my actual transaction this morning.

My Health fund (AHM) provides one flat reimbursement amount per calendar year (so not segregated by frame or lenses). You might want to check the PDS of your health cover…

As for the specsaver promotion itself
I agree with you that Specsavers promotions can be a lil dodgy/misleading with their promotion. They provide a 2 frames for $199 but may end up charging you a lot more in Lens options. This time I find it very simple, which a flat 50% off to the amount you need to pay

      • Thanks

  • +1

You can get extras cover from AHM without a waiting period, get $200 worth of optical (100% rebate) and then cancel it.

    https://ahm.com.au/health-insurance/extras-cover/lifestyle-e…

    • You also need hospital cover to get $200.

      • Nope, this is extras only.

    • +1

I don't know if you'll be able to cancel straight away. You'll probably end up having to pay for at least the first month and then you'll be on the record as having used optical. These sorts of tactics may come back to bite you I imagine when it comes to health insurance.

The ad says 50% off only the $199.00 range ( not $199 and above ) .

I just had a look at everything in their $199.00 range …….if I bought any of those frames , people would laugh at me in the street.

    • +29

Nah.. people on the street don't care mate.

        • +8

          Weird flex.. but ok

        • +3

upload a pic and let us be the judge

        • +4

If you really were attractive, you could rock any pair of glasses from Specsavers and look good.

        • +1

A lot people missed your sarcasm frugalfred and have negged you dearly based on their lack of a sense of humour.

I just wanted to let you know that I got it (and plus voted you). :).

    • Worth checking at your local branch. The 50% promotion works for my $249 lens :)

      • ** edit: works for any frame ranges above $199

  • I've called Watergardens Specsavers store and they've never heard of the 50% discount. Must be an offer only available in selected stores.

    • Sounds like the equivalent of retail click bait , you go to your local store to inquire about the 50% discount , the store knows nothing about it , but when whilst your in the store you might just buy something anyway.

      • +1

Nah, the OP uploaded a photo of the advert, which looks like it is being displayed in the shopfront window.

    • +1

I’m confused by this too, my mate checked at Specsavers Collins st and they haven’t heard of such offer too.

The advert was taken from Specsavers window at Ringwood, VIC

      • There was a TV ad about this last night.

  • Need 50% off contacts pls

    • I can confirm this works in Ringwood, VIC branch. You can give them a call.

Not sure where in Melbourne you’re based. But I think you can try your luck by calling your local branch to match the deal?

  • any idea if sunglasses are included?

    • Deer with no eyes

    • Do they have proper prescription sunglasses?

    • Yes. Sunglasses are just regular frames + lenses with ‘Tinted’ options

(* ticked the ‘Associated’ Box by accident, I’m just a customer )

  • +2

Just went into a store and they are like no this is probably another country's offer. Or they claimed it was a fake. Cya later I said….

Dont they have store internal communication channels or anything!

    • I’m sorry about this. Staff in Ringwood told me this is a promotion initiated by headquarter, let me ring up and confirm

      • Showed web brochure to staff at KnoxCity who said they didn’t know about it but would have to honour the deal.

        • do you have the link to the web brochure?

          • @b0b0: I just showed them the 'Go to Deal' page.

  • +5

Two sets I got from spec savers were unusable, gave me headaches and weren’t sharp. Used a prescription from other glasses that worked fine. Never again.

    • +2

I agree man, I d rather go somewhere else, their specs are shit.

  • +1

I don't have extras cover so I can't claim on glasses.

I generally order mine from zennioptical.com and can get multifocals cheaper than I can get single vision glasses from Specsavers.
As an example, my last pair were (US)$25.95 for the frame, 43.95 for the multifocal lenses with Blockz (blue blocking) coating and $9.95 Postage.
    Total 79.85USD (AU $115.27)

If you can claim, it makes sense to buy local and get a refund, but if not, try online from zennioptical or goggles4u or other online sales.

    • This is a good price, how do they measure eye sights when you just order online?

      • You request a prescription from your optometrist, much like receiving a prescription for medication from your Local Dr. You can then enter all details across on website when ordering. Often pupillary distance is missing, someone can measure this with a ruler for you. Of course the big shops like SpecSavers do not like giving you your prescription as their model relies on you buying their glasses in-store, but they are obligated to give you prescription details if you ask.

        • Oh thanks man, I can't remember how much it cost me to get eye check under medicare, mmm, I am wondering if they made the prescription unsuitable for your eyes, can you send back to Zenni Optical? Because I had poor experience with Specsavers, their bluelight coating gave me headache.

          • @Yaren24: I'm not an expert but I think most places will bulk-bill for an eye test. Not sure about zenni but I've bought from clearly.com.au where I can also claim from my private health. They have a 14 day return policy and I've successfully returned glasses from them before, although it looks like they have tightened up their return policy in the last few years.

          • -1

@Yaren24: Medicare covers an eye test every 2 years, and the optometrist have to give you the prescription if you ask for it. As mentioned above, most prescriptions don't have the PD listed but most online glasses sites have good info on how to measure it.

            • @SteveM: Thanks Steve!

            • +1

@SteveM: I found out recently that this has changed with Medicare - eye test is now covered once every 3 years for under 65 / once a year for over 65 y.o.

          • @Yaren24: I thought you can take them back and get a new pair made up if they are not suitable for you

        • Chiming in here
Prescription is your property and every Optometrist will give you your prescription. Don't feel intimidated asking.
Pupil distance can be measured from the centre of your nose bridge to your eye with a ruler (or ask your optometrist to measure it for you). This will give you a general idea for your PD. The correct measurement however will be to mark the lens whilst wearing the frame as that will give you the correct PD for how the glasses sit on you (Makes a difference for people who have slightly crooked nose)

However, having said all this, DO NOT try and get progressive (multifocal) lenses online. Glasses sit different on everyone. There is no way for online optical shops to know where those frames will sit on you so there is no way for them to get the correct HEIGHT for your progressive lenses.
Height is used to determine where the progressive lenses will start from (distance) which will also determine where your reading will be.

Furthermore, DO NOT get glasses online if you have a high prescription as again, there is no HEIGHT in the glasses. You need both PUPIL DISTANCE and HEIGHT to determine where the lenses will sit on the glasses. Makes a huge difference when the prescription is high (Look up Prentice's Rule)

          • @FideiAngelus: My last multifocals from Specsavers, they carefully measured and marked the pupil positions on the glasses with them sitting how I like to wear them (high on my nose), but once they glasses were made I could only see properly if wore them at the tip of my nose and they wouldn't fix it for me.
I have had several from online stores and not had a miss yet.

  • +2

I much prefer Bailey Nelson for my eyeware needs. You can get frames and lenses from $95.

    • I quite like them also and have used specsavers twice, dumb question but do they do eye tests there too?

      • Yes. Full service optometry is available at all stores.

  • Is this the Ringwood - Eastland Specsavers?

    • Yes!

Btw I’m not associated with Specsavers. I ticked the ‘associated’ box by accident

      • thanks i hv make appointment for tomorrow.

so we can only make a pair? i am thinking to do normal glasses and a sunnies with prescription.

        • from my conversation with staff, they allow making more than a pair

  • +2

  • anyone spot in nsw?

  • +1
