Australian Coin Counter with Display

So I am in need of a cheap solution to counting or estimating the cost of jars worth of coins.. usually only maybe one third or half full but yeah there is a bit of coins.

Wondering what my cheapest options are besides bringing them to the bank every now and then and getting them sorted and counted there.

Looking for a quick and easy in house solution.

Looking for a quick and easy in house solution.

    • Counting them out…

    • Using them when buying stuff and not letting them get to such a large amount

    • Alternatively, go to your nearest vending machine, load it up and hit cancel or get change. It'll spit out the change in $2 increments.

Actually that is not a bad idea.

For once you have proven for me useful Backspace.

      Thanks.

Yeah I was looking for a 2 in 1 counting and storage solution mainly for a very old friend who honestly can't do what you have suggested all the time.

But thanks for the helpful input as always.

CommBank has and other banks might have a free coin deposit.

I go every few months and dump my coins into my bank account.

    • I am with Westpac but there is a St George Bank nearby.. any idea if they have the same facilities and are still linked with Westpac?

      • Can’t you just go to a westpac branch ?

Seeing as I have no idea where you live(Sydney somewhere according to profile). I’m unable to advise if there are similar facilities at your Westpac branch. Maybe try their website. St George is quite small in Victoria but might be bitter in Sydney

        • I am in Katoomba NSW 2780.

I have ANZ, CommBank, NAB, St George, Bendigo Bank near me.

There is a Westpac in Leura a suburb over but the above are much closer.

      • Yes, you can use St George/Westpac coin ATMs - just dump your coins and it will count them all for you and deposit the proceeds into your account!

        • Sweet looks like I know what I will be doing tomorrow!

oh wait is it public holiday tomorrow aka banks closed? :(

          • @AlienC: They're deposit atms
There are some atms near me (outside branch so accessible anytime) that do the coin deposits so try to see if theyre the same near you

        • Second this.
I used to save change in coin bags until they were full but that takes years.

It's very much easier to use coin deposit ATM's - literally dump unsorted coins in the tray, tip it into the guts, wait a minute while it chugs away and deposits it into your account.

Counting and sorting is time-consuming and doesn't finish the job.

    • Yes something like this but maybe cheaper.

Ebay has some around the $12 and lower range + free delivery also.

      But basically that.

I saw some $20 ones that you can dump a whole bunch into at a time instead of individually but they require more power I think.

if it doesn't need to be super exact go by weight, used to do this working fast food retail but stopped when I was $2 out by weight but dead on when hand counting (most likely damaged coins or slightly off samples).

so zero the scales with an empty cup, count out 10 single denomination coins, note the weight and dump the rest of the deonmination in. admittedly not good for mixed change but an option.

  • My local bendigo bank has a coin counting machine.
If your does you could open a free Bendigo Bank Savings Account
and just use that if your local bendigo bank has a coin counting machine.

Give all the coins to the teller and let them count it up!

  • Not sure what cheap is to you but you can buy Australian coin counting machines on eBay for ~$140.

    • Found some similar but more used ones on Gumtree but yes trying to see if there is some cheap Chinese or other country's counterparts before going for that as that is a bit more than what I wanted to spend by a lot.

      Aiming below $40

  • If you’ve got cardboards lying around: https://www.google.com/search?q=diy+coin+counter
    Then weight them

Pay with coins at the self serve checkout at woollies or coles. I dump mine into the machine and it counts them pretty quickly.

    • This is what I'm thinking just not sure what the limit is before it spits it all back out.

      • I bring a pocket full of coins and some notes. Throw in the coins first and then pay the remaining balance with a note to the closest amount. It does spit some change back but it beats having to worry about having the right change. It doesn’t take long to get rid of jars of coins this way… but if you are dealing with buckets, then, you’re better of going to the bank and depositing or transferring them there. They have some bucket machine where you put a bucket of money in and it makes a bunch noise.

You could spend it Kramer style

Haha have honestly done a smaller version of that before but the cashier was very nice about it. Feels bad doing that honestly but worse comes to worse that is my last resort.

Bank tellers love it when customers bring in a money box to count - it usually pays for morning coffee.

    • How does it usually pay for morning coffee or you mean it is a slow job so that can relax and drink coffee?

Or did you mean pays for the person that brings it in morning coffee aka in this scenario situation.. Me.

    • Yeah and every other customer behind you will haunt you, remember you, and follow you home…
