oh, oh no, thats like, well devastating compadres

  • I received a text about this earlier today:

You're invited to join our rewards program, Telstra Plus. Join today and be ready to earn points towards incredible rewards from 14 May, just by paying your bill.

Haven't had time to look over it yet, but hopefully the cheap movie tickets are available on the lower tiers.

The Thanks but no thanks program was bad enough. Cancelled due to low engagement/use.

Version 2 of any marketing effort is the opposite of a new version of a product, in that it is invariably worse: More complex terms and conditions that prevent it being worth anything, increased collection of consumer data, more sharing across more partners, and lower benefits.

The poorest types charge for 'membership'. Worse again, membership tiers indicating levels or suggesting the award 'VIP' status. These are absolutely nothing to do with what a loyalty program is trying to achieve, but it is useful to signal the true intent of a Corporation, as it clearly thinks you should pay for them for retaining your loyalty (!?!)

Good riddance. Only thing the boof-heads' bastardised NBN does for us is exorcise Helstra from our lives, and increase our reliance on cellular phones (and their increased costs).

I think this is a genuine Telstra rethink. They've already made several huge changes to start treating the customer as something to be earned, not trapped. No lock in contacts. No excess usage charges. Etc. In this environment such an approach needs to keep attracting customers to stay rather than jump at any better one of deal that pops up. The new reward program will hopefully actually reward loyalty.

As a long time Telstra customer, this feels like a kick in the teeth. Now all my years of 'loyalty' are worth nothing to them and I have to start from scratch. So I will now be actively looking at the other telcos to switch my plans to for the second half of 2019 onward.

    • What? You literally start at the tier that you've been spending with them for the last 12 months. Additionally, you get bonus points depending on how long you've been with them before.

I just updated the Telstra 24:7 app on my phone and was greeted with this announcement. Only Personal customers are eligible for the new program, Business customers like me have been left out on the cold. They’re obviously working harder to attract and retain consumers but business customers can go get stuffed. Makes me feel so (not) appreciated. Combined with the recent closure of my local Telstra Business centre it’s got me rethinking where I should take my ‘loyalty’ to next.
