Budget of ~ $1300 for TV

Hi All,

My family and I are furnishing an empty theater room and would like to get a TV for it.

We dont watch a whole lot of tv and are not too particular with the quality of the picture or sound as long as they are reasonable and affordable. I do however am impressed by the super large tv screens on demo in stores like jbhifi and TGG. I understand that these requirements are quite subjective. So my question for you is would you spend 1300 on a good brand tv (smaller in size) or would you go the max size you can get regardless of the brand.

Feel free to let me know if there is any good deal for something around this price range. Dont mind a good bargain, we are on OZB afterall!

Thanks all!

You can pick up a 65' Soniq TV for about $700 but if you compared this next to a Hisense P7 for about $1300, you would see a noticable difference in quality.

The flaws or not so great technical specs of a TV are highlighted considerably more on a bigger screen, which I think many would find annoying.

A renowned brand will usually provide better longevity with higher quality parts used, better customer service & issuing TV updates.

The most important aspect is the size of your lounge & distance from your TV. This dictates the size you need.

    Personally I would opt for 65 Hisense P7 $1300 or 55 Samsung NU8000 $1100

    • Thanks for the vote and advice.

I will have a side by side comparison to see if i can tell what you are describing. In general im not a snob for picture quality and usually i cant tell the difference. But i will pay attention to this the next time i visit a store.

Off topic slightly, but if you don't watch a lot of tv could you not use the room for some other purpose that is more of interest to you?

Very good point. We are actually re-purposing the room to be a semi theater and childs play room. Would be nice to have a tv to catch up on some shows while the kid is playing there.

I am open to options but at this stage a TV seems like a good choice.

  • Re Quality - To a degree, it also depends what you watch.

I remember seeing David Attenborough's The Blue Planet round my friends & it was asbsolutely stunning to watch.

  • Hisense 65" P7.

SD looks garbage (as per all TV's these days), but HD and 4k content is unreal for the price.

  • i work in an industry where they use multiple large tv's in venues

those cheap ass hisense, soniq and conias they're good for a year and then well…

i get them replaced so often it's not funny

    • Hisense is vastly better than Soniq/Conias & a different league imo.

      • I agree Hisense and TCL is at the very least above a Soniq/Kogan/Conia(Lol never heard of those)/Bauhn/Jaeger/etc bottom of the barrel cheap brands.

    • Which brand or model do you reckon performs the best lifetime wise?

Or which do you think is best value in the 55 65 and 75 inch space in your opinion?

  • Lifetime wise is difficult to tell but from my experience, TVs generally have a good lifespan these days. Most upgrade for a bigger/Better quality TV.

Best value 55? I would say the Hisense P7, which JB has for $895. If you have a couple of hundred more though, I would opt for the Samsung NU8000. Excellent TV. JB seems to have now run out now but But Smarte has it for $1,089.

Re 55 – 75 TV – The viewing distance from your sofa to the TV dictates the size TV you should get. You don’t want to be smothered or too far from your TV. This should help.

Now is the golden hour of the year to purchase a great TV on the cheap because most outlets are trying to clear their 2018 models.

  • I would also go for the Samsung nu8000

They're on clearance pricing in the US right now, so hopefully will come down further in Australia
