i think youve just lost 2k

Haha… Let's see how it goes..

    • I had a similar issue with not having the middle name on PayPal, their only solution was to create a new account. This is for attaching Cc to PayPal.

So it's PayPal's fault, the ombudsman's fault, or someone else's fault that you created an account in an identity that isn't yours?

Long story short - if your identity doesn't match that of a PayPal account (or the account of any bank that is worth their salt for that matter), the money in that account is not yours.

Get a fake Id made up. Ask the kids at your local school were they get them made up.

    Ask a real lawyer.

You can ask the person who sent the funds to dispute the transaction. You should still be able to refund payments while frozen, than ask them to transfer it to you through a different method.

This would be the only choice you have, PayPal is here to make money not to help you rectify your shady antics.

    • +3

      Quality products and quality advice.

  • +8

I am actually quite impressed that PayPal is not releasing the money when the name doesn't match.

    • What are you talking about? PayPal is a financial institution that is regulated like any bank or institution with the exception of Afterpay Touch.

      • /s

      • -4

I don't think they are regulated the same as anybody else because they do not require an ID when you open an account you can simply enter a dummy email address a dummy name and get started

        • +1

And how’s that worked out for you?

PayPal have definitely not done anything wrong here

      • really.

    • +1

Typically once you get close to having $1000 in your PP account they start asking questions. More specifically about the ATO and to ensure you're compliant. Otherwise they will potentially take action against your account.

  • Try and get the sender to recall the payment perhaps?

    • Thank you that is a valid suggestion and my ultimate option I guess

  • Best chance might be to get the money sender to retrieve their money. The false account bit will be against the T&Cs.

BTW didn't you have to confirm your Paypal account with a real bank account?

    • I will try to do that but it is a big corporation, so it might be a little bit difficult.. hence trying to find another way

  • +1

I wonder if its almost easier to just change your name, at least for a little while then change back.

    • Not worth it for $2,000 but that is certainly an option

Ok, I totally accept that I created the fake account not blaming people for this at all.

For everyone defending PayPal remember that people allowed using this fake account for over 6 years with a total purchase of over $50,000.
They made commissions on this on all this while, and now turn around and ask me for ID which I'm happy to provide but they won't let me change the name on the account.

I totally agree that I created a fake account no doubt. However given that Paypal was complicit in not requiring an ID for all these years for them to turn around and lock the account now and not allow a correction to take place is self serving.

I know I will get the money back it will just take some time and if I don't get it back in 7 years they'll give it to the government I guess I'll have to think of it as a donation then.

In the meanwhile if anyone has encountered this scenario before I'm still waiting for any helpful suggestions if you have any.

Mate, look above. You think there is a magical URL someone hasn't suggested? You used a fake name to retrieve $2,000. Anti-money laundering laws are there to prevent exactly what you're trying to do, and that is retrieve a decent sum of cash under a name that isn't real…

Your options are very limited, so make a decision

      1) Change your name (highly unlikely)
      3) Forfeit the funds to PayPal (preventable)
      2) Ask the sender to dispute the transaction, refund, and pay you via an alternative method

      It's a no-brainer?!

      • Thanks mate, I'll explore it with the sender.
They are a big company so it may be a little hard but let's see.
Thanks for chiming in appreciate it.

but they won't let me change the name on the account.
Paypal won't let me change the name to my real name so I can prove it with ID.

You keep saying this but to let you change the name, you need to prove it's yours in the first hand…

      • -3

You know they didn't have a problem making money off it for the past 8 years,

Also I could easily prove it's my account, the name on the card the bank account connected all have real names. That's the same they've been charging all this while.

This is just a case of being inconvenient for them and they want to play hardball. It's ok i'll deal with it.

If it's a case of True financial regulation then shouldn't it be regulated all the while when opening the account.

        • +2

Making payments linked to a card/bank account and suddenly withdrawing a decent amount of cash are not the same thing.

  • +1

If your accounts in credit $2k can't you just buy stuff online using PayPal? Usually they only ask for verification if your trying to transfer to a bank account

    • It's frozen, you cannot do anything to your account besides upload ID and refund payments, rectify disputed transactions

      • Yes, it's frozen

  • rip……I do mine the other way, I buy with my real name but sell with a fake name…..

    • +2

What's the purpose of your exercise? Seller wouldn't know who is the sex toy buyer ?

      • …was suppose to differentiate and separate my buying and selling entities from each other……like what other people have done…..some using same names and some, like OP and me, using a fake name…. So when it comes down to it, no one would be able to tell these two are the same person….because they are in fact different….as this is what you want them to believe if your intention was to separate your entities from each other…

    • +2

But that's the same way as the OP?

      • +1

        I guess….in a sense….hmm…..

  • +6

Why would you use a fake name paypal account for a "business transaction"?

    • old account been using it for 9 year, didn't realise it was an issue until this moment.

  • Why does PayPal limit accounts?

We need to comply with laws such as the Australian Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing laws, or the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

    • haha That doesn't mean they shoudl restrict change of name.

  • Get said person to do a drawback and then re transfer to another location.

I had a few duplicates years and years ago, PayPal were useless but I had success with emailing this address being completely honest and asking for help

    Paypal email [email protected]

    • Thank you :) this is just why I posted here. Will give it a go.

  • The Australian Anti Money Laundering regulations apply only to account withdrawals/transfers and is concerned with large sums.

Same thing with super funds. You can deposit under any name, but when it comes to withdrawing, that's when you need to provide ID . If at that time, your name does not match, good luck jumping through all the hoops to get access to your lifetime of super contributions.

  • Report it to the FRAUD SQUAD! 😂

  • +1

if you have turned over 50k on purchases you didnt want in your name its a extra 4% fee to keep your name off the toys or what ever you purchased.
    sounds fair to me.
interesting you are ok now providing your real name to be tied to those purchases.
i can just imagine the person at the financial ombudsman reading your complaint and wondering what your IQ is.
if you posted this for a roast well done, if not ohhhh
