Who tf is committing three years to a phone plan. Unbelievable.

    • +3

With Vodafone the contract period is merely the time over which you have to pay back the device. There's no charge to get out of the contract except paying the retail cost of the phone. The monthly price for the plan is the same for any period. If the period is 1 year the cost of the device has to be paid in 12 equal instalments instead of 36

Woolworths don't do the pixel 3, but their 36 month plans are a better value proposition than the Vodafone 36 month plans - their cost over 3 years is the same as the cost over 2 years. So although you're committing to them for an extra year, at least you save, in that you get a year's free service. With Vodafone, you pay more for the 3 year contract.

I think you can get a 30g for $30 a month on a 12 month term at Optus. The 36 month lock-in makes this uncompetitive.

    • Did you read above comment. The contracts are different now with Vodafone. This is with a phone unlike the Optsu simonly you mention.

      • +2

The point I was making about the Optus plan was that it acts as a benchmark that you can get for 30 gigs. If you were to extend the Optus plan for 36 months then that would be $1080. The total cost for the this plan over 36 months is $2,124. Therefore the value of the Pixel 3 plus must be greater than $1,044 for this deal to work out. That’s my rough rationale anyway.

        • I get where your going, but the deal here is to get the pixel 3 interest free for either 12/24/36 months at $1188 starting on postpaid plans ( month to month, no contract ) at $33 pm for 30GB data or more if you want.

          • @ozhunter68: I have no idea how much the Pixel is. All I am doing is setting the threshold on what would make this a good deal or not.if the Pixel was $500 then would this be a good deal? Maybe not. People can judge for themselves.

            • @Icecold5000: Before people do Micky Mouse Maths they need to read the details of the offer for phone type contracts, even for prepaid. Not just go on the assumption of the heading, that's like getting a newspaper article and commenting on the heading without even reading content and details.

Check out the price of a Pixel 3.

          • @ozhunter68: If you can't afford a phone over 6 months with zip pay while saving hundreds, perhaps shouldn't buy a phone?

            • @onlinepred: Agree. I always buy phones outright the last 17 years or so, but still might suit some people. Just another option.

  • "Not a bad deal considering the bonus Google mini (RRP $79)"

True, but it's still less than 4% of what you'll be paying over the three years (and you can get them for less than that).

    • Yep, free few months ago from Telstra with many cheap prepaid smartphones $49 +.

    • I still believe it is a good deal cuz if you go 24 months, then you will pay 21 dollars per month for 30GB data, a google mini (which pretty much covers you for at least 2 months if resold) and an interest-free pixel 3. Seems pretty good to me!

      • Google home mini are worth like$30. Everyone had got one for free at some point.

  • +1

Before signing up, you need to consider if you can stick with the Pixel 3 for three years. That's a long time in this day and age of annual flagships!

    • -1

Still has loads of bugs too.

  • +3

Equivalent to $88.50/month over 24 months

And a Google mini never sells for $79 lol

    $88/month over 24 months gets you 50gb @ optus

    Or $79/month with 20gb data @ telstra

This is a very average deal

    • -1

Yea have to agree here. I would rather pick Telstra for the better network coverage.

Edit: Optus was doing it $59 per month for 24 months on 30GB previously (expired though). This is 36 months ouch!

It is 71 Dollars on Vodafone for 24 months if you take the 64 GB Pixel and 30gb plan. How did you come up with 88?

      • Was averaging out the cost of your title deal, $59/month over 3 years which is the equivalent in cost to $88.50/month over 2 years ($59*36=$2124/24=$88.50)

It highlights just how bad it is choosing a 3yr option, particularly if it's $17.50/month worse than their 2yr plan. That's $420 extra you're paying for a longer contract term. And you get a Google mini for that lol

        • Lol, instead of selecting the 24 month option, you made up your own figures for a 24 month plan based on the 36 month option? That makes no sense.

          • -3

@aja12: Op felt the need to share the 3yr plan as their deal post due to getting a free Google home mini

But you're overpaying for that benefit, which is why I did the sums

It's like taking a car loan out over 7yrs because it brings your repayments down without realising the extra interest you're paying.

A 3yr phone plan has yet to prove to be a smart decision.

            • +2

@spackbace: All these people making comments on their own imaginary maths sums.

Did anyone even click on the vodafone deal and look?

This is not your average type contract. Can take out the deal for $59 per month if you choose that one, save up 6 months to pay out the remaining left on the phone and the pick any sim only deal you like and enjoy your phone and google home mini.

            • +1

@spackbace: You just had to neg did not you? The google mini comes with any repayment plan you choose. All you had to do was opening the deal page and reading it, which you did not.

        • Well, you are getting the mini anyways with any plan or contract length you choose. Just updated the post to reflect all plans and costs for the Pixel. For the XL model, check out the website for yourself please.

    • +1

How did you come up with $88.50 per month for the Pixel 3 on a 24 month plan?

    • Equivalent to $88.50/month over 24 months

It's not equivalent, it comes with an extra 12 months of service. If you want 24 months there's a bigger discount and it comes to $71 per month or $82.5 for the 100GB plan.

  • -1

This ends up to be actually very expensive due to paying this off for 36 months instead of the usual 24.

    • +2

You can choose 12/24/36, your pick. It's basically so called interest free as long as your in the month to month postpaid plan.

You need to pay off $1188 regardless of the time, when you want out just pay balance owing and your free to go.

      • +2

You would also get the benefit of 3 years warranty.

    • Care to explain why this becomes very expensive over 36 months?

  • Out of curiosity because you are paying for the phone over 3 years does that mean vodafone will warrant the product for three years?
If so does that make the expected reasonable warranty on pixel 3 three years?

    • -1

I would say standard 2 year warranty sticks.

      • If you get a phone with a phone plan, you would reasonably assume the phone would be free from defects for the life of the plan.

The bigger issue you would run into it that the phone might not last that long if it is not looked after well enough (drops etc), which wouldn't be covered (this is what the telcos are relying on; they would have been collecting years and years of data on this which makes this plan worthwhile for them).

        https://www.choice.com.au/electronics-and-technology/phones/…

"If you buy your phone handset by signing onto a two-year contract with a telco, the ACCC believes it's a reasonable expectation that any phone provided last the length of this contract. And provided any faults with the phone are not your doing, under Australian Consumer Law (ACL) you can return the phone to either the manufacturer or retail store where it was bought for a repair or refund within a "reasonable time" if it is not fit for purpose. "

        • Not sure why the neg. 24 months is a reasonable time, you would have to argue for 3 years. Even that choice article only referenced 24 months.

Given the phones come with 2 years from the manufacturer, who would provide the warranty? The telco?

It's a guide, not a rule. If you get a 12 month plan, you can expect that it should last longer than 12 months right? That already brakes your little rule.

          • @onlinepred: It's not my little rule:

"the ACCC believes it's a reasonable expectation that any phone provided last the length of this contract."
"under Australian Consumer Law (ACL) you can return the phone to either the manufacturer or retail store where it was bought for a repair or refund within a "reasonable time" if it is not fit for purpose. "

If you buy a phone on a 3 year contact and it doesn't last for 3 years due to a manufacturing defect, then it's not fit for the purpose of the contract.

            • @bleckyL: Yes, a reasonable time. That time is 2 years. It's been deemed reasonable by the manufacturer and the telco.

Anyway, maybe they will provide an extra year warranty on top, I doubt it, and I dont think you can argue as 2 years is the already defined reasonable time for phones.

              • @onlinepred: The Choice article referred to 2 years as an example, because that has become standard length of time for phone contracts. A 3 year contract is a relatively new thing. Telcos have been doing the sums and worked out that it will still make them money, even if there is a higher rate of defects towards the end of the contract's life (or they hope people end up breaking them).

You aren't buying a phone in a phone contract, you are buying a service that comes included with a phone. If the phone breaks through no fault of your own, then you aren't getting the service you paid for.

                Here's some more links:

                https://www.finder.com.au/what-warranty-will-i-get-with-a-ne… :

"Specifically, goods must be "fit for purpose" for normal usage and the costs of the goods. There's no absolute hard and fast time period written into Australian consumer law as it relates to warranty."

"If you purchased your phone on a contract, you've got at least the period of the contract for warranty guarantees to apply, presuming normal use of the phone."

                https://www.dynamicbusiness.com.au/small-business-resources/…

"It is reasonable for consumers to expect that any phone they buy will last for the length of the service contract they enter into."

                • @bleckyL: Again all they mention is "For most phone contracts that equates to two years of warranty coverage."

That is the expected life of a phone. That is what defines a phone fit for purpose. If you are owning the phone, then IMO it's on you. It's only if you are leasing the phone that you may have an extended warranty period. I guess we will find out when people start making claims after 2 years on 3 year plans.

  • Terrible value… Not too long ago there was a Harvey Norman plan where you get pixel 3 + Google Home hub + 300 dollar gift card for 77 a month for 2 years.

  • +1

This is not a deal. Far too expensive. Compare it to Telstra pixel 2xl deal.. it's a no brainer

  • +1

    $59 over 3 years isn't a deal

Lmao this is the most ridiculous thing I've read
