GPU Died Today Looking for Something with Same Performance at a Cheap Price

Had a Winforce R9 290 OC. I bought it for $100 used but it died today and I need something with either same performance or better but at a price not more than $100.

I'd rather not buy another r9 290 as it constantly went to 94 degrees and throttled from the heat and the fans were extremely loud.

What can I get that has the same performance or better at the same price either new or used?

Sounds like you never replaced the thermal paste and it's cooked itself.

    • I did. Also replaced stock fans with 2x120mm noctua fans

      • Then something else was wrong they shouldn't run at 94c

  • Look on gumtree/facebook marketplace.

You got that card for a good price, gonna be hard to find something similar.

Give it a clean and reseat? Tech yes city has good vids on restoring cards Link and the end of this vid Link 2Not too hard if you can get all the screws off. He is also a bit rough as I think he has heaps of parts to go through. There isn't too much around that price. There was a mining rx570 4gb for $140 or so? Or you would be trying to look for second hand or ebay deals for similar cards to the R9 290 OC.

    • I did all that when I first bought it. Nothing stopped it from getting high temps and thermal throttling

  • 94 degrees on that card are not normal operating temps, seems like it operated at too high a temp significantly reducing its life, you probably needed to clean the dust out.

There is nothing you can get at a same performance for a similar price point, you got a real steal for $100. Contact the original owner and try to get a receipt, maybe its still under warranty.

94C is not that unusual if case cooling is pretty average. These cards can reach 90C quite easily in demanding games or when the frame rate is uncapped.

    • When I bought the card I replaced the stock fans with 2x120mm noctua fans. Also reapplied the thermal paste. Case cooling is good

      • Looking at benchmarks the 290 is a pretty hot card but 94C does seem a bit unusual if your case cooling was good. For reference my RX570 reaches around 75-80C under heavy load but it's in a crossfire config (only an 3cm space between the cards), benchmarks suggest the average is around 70C.

  • RX570 has similar performance and you can get one for around $200 or less if you wait for a deal. Also pretty sure you can still get two games with it (Resident Evil 2, The Division 2 or Devil May Cry 5). Don't bother with the RX580 unless it's under $250 as the difference between the RX570 and RX580 is only 15% or so. Also the Nvidia equivalent of the RX570/580 is the 1060 3GB/6GB. Basically any card from the ones I mentioned under $250 is a good replacement for your card.

  • GTX 780 Ti ~ R9 290/R9 390 ~ GTX 970 ~ GTX 980 ~ GTX 1060 3GB/6GB ~ RX570 ~ RX480/RX580 ~ RX590 ~ GTX 1660

…those are the rough equivalents, also depends on the title.

As you can see the R9 290 can run decently alongside newcomers like the GTX 1660 and RX 590, very rarely. Also rarely it might be as slow as the GTX 970 and RX 470. Sometimes it can perform above expectations to run alongside the GTX 980, RX 480, RX 580, and GTX 1060 6GB. Though in general it is roughly matching the likes of the GTX 780 Ti, R9 390, RX 570, GTX 1060 3GB.

I generally focus on Far Cry 5/New Dawn benchmark, as its decently optimised for both AMD and Nvidia, and it is a CPU and GPU demanding game = well balanced. However, its best to use as many benchmarks as possible to get a more accurate answer. Though remember, the older cards are quite hot and thirsty ; )

  • Sounds like a card that was used for mining
