Advice on choosing large monitor for someone with failing eyesight

Real experiences appreciated - there seem to be differing views on what is the best large monitor choice (27 or 32") for someone with failing eyesight - it's for browsing and email only. The need is for everything on the screen to be larger, rather than for more space on the screen. Choices includes a 27 or 32" at 1080p(FHD) or a 27 or 32" 2k or 4k monitor. If they choose 2k or 4k, then the next question is about the resolution it is set at - namely run it at 1080p or run it at higher resolutions but try to use Windows scaling to make everything bigger.

    Bigger.

    Maybe glasses.

    Or Braille reader.

just get a 1080 LED if you're gonna scale it anyway, they're really cheap these days

Large screen with a lower res is what you want. is 1080 res will be excellent for this.

  • 4K would be a waste, as it just helps you make things tinier but still distinct

Biggest size with lowest resolution you can get

LG 27inch IPS monitors are really good for the price - can pick up for around $250 or so. Currently using LG 27MP48HQ.

Couldn't go higher resolution as everything was too tiny - 1440P 27 inch makes me need to sit very close to monitor/not comfortable.

Other option is the Philips 31.5" monitor BDM3201FD for around $280. Screen quality isn't bad but wasn't suitable for me for just browsing as I needed to sit further away and didn't have the desk space for comfortable viewing.

Hi OP. If you are a Windows user, increasing the font size can also help. Here is a solution for Windows 10 users.

    • Thanks all for the advice. Re Increasing the font size: for me as a different user with ok eyesight using a 23" 1080p monitor, scaling up in Windows 10 has worked variably - it is great for browsing and email but for some other apps such as File Explorer it usually displays such small font that it is unreadable - turning the computer off and on again sometimes makes the font go back to a good size for a while before it happens again. A search indicates that others have had this "tiny font" problem but there seems no permanent solution.

  • Large 27-32 inch 1080p screen

My old man went through this with hi TV couldn't see the score in the top corner of TV watching footy, he eventually stopped at 75" gave in bought some glasses! then found out that his Foxtel was garbage compared to streaming where they actually gave you all the HD channels

Other than that there was some upgraded toys in the accessibility options in latest release of windows which retained the settings mentioned above, the most stable build is actually on the Windows Insiders programme, fast ring as long as you don't mind your machine being updated every other week sometime twice a week but I let mine run at night so it never bothers me. Once you get to a stable build you can always stop the updates

I know there has been a few opting for a TV which is actually what quite a lot are doing however they went with the smallest 4k UHD TV they could find, the higher resolution and additional settings within the TV gave them more adaptability the just the PC alone to get the picture right where they wanted it.

it's like everything you have to do some physical testing and see what works for you.

My local JB Hifi lets you bring your personal machine in if practical and connect it up to a range of monitors and TV's to try them out (Admittedly easier if you're using a laptop) or a machine they actually carry on display, but helpful for those that need to get the purchase right for whatever circumstance.

  • I run a 43 in tv as a monitor I set text text to 150 % and run at 1080P great for general stuff and browsing. I tried a 27 in asus nonitor and despite doing the same as above had trouble reading text even with zooming the browser up to 125% so wasted $240 on the monitor which has only been unpacked and used once .
