Can I Return/Swap Microsoft Surface Go from JB Hi-Fi for Another Product if It's Been Used a Little (Causing Huge Eye Strain)

Hi all, I bought a Microsoft Surface Go from JB Hifi. It's been causing me massive amounts of eye strain, something exactly as described in this thread

Basically after using/looking at the screen for a few minutes or so my eyes get crazy eye strain like I can feel it throughout my whole eyeballs. Then I can't open my eyes anymore and I always end up being forced/induced to sleep because the eye strain is crazy. I've been using this Surface Go for a number of days and I end up being forced/induced to sleep multiple times a day - pretty much like I watch the news or read a few websites for 30 minutes and then bam! The eye strain escalates and gets worse and worse and then it's almost like I've been hit with general anaesthesia all of a sudden and pass out and fall asleep. I thought Microsoft was a premium brand and their screens would be like Apple's and I would avoid the problems I had with Dell and Toshiba but obviously I am very very wrong.

I've had similar problems with a Toshiba and a Dell laptop in the past, where the screen was a glass one. I've since bought a Lenovo laptop with a matte screen and I've never had a problem with that. Albeit, all Apple products I've used for numerous years and I've never had a problem with them.

Would I be able to take the product back? I mean it doesn't have technical issues per se, but I can barely use it because I just can't look at the screen without feeling very noticeable and tangible eye strain and then passing out and falling asleep.

Thanks in advance.

  • You’re best bet would be to ask MS, or the retailer, who I’m not sure, that could be MS too?

The other option would be to buy a matt screen protector, which could possibly remove the glare/strain issue? Not sure if that’s an option, just thinking of options in case you’re not able to return it.

  • Why don’t you just ring up JB Hifi and find out ? It’s not that hard, isn’t it ?

If you had eye problems using devices in the past why didnt you check before buying ?

Your best bet is a screen protector or good will from MS

Maybe you have the brightness too high or too low?

edit to add: You can also change Night light settings to a colour temperature you might prefer.

This would be classed as change of mind. So it's up to store disgressin.

    Not a chance.

Use a program call f.lux, it reduces the blue light coming from the screen.

Sorry, I call bullshit. The two glossy screens are basically the same technology between the surface and macbook. You clearly have a problem with your eyes.

Isn't the surface go 10"? Why'd you buy a smaller screen?

  • cannot. if bought from ms store directly, maybe can.

  • I would hate to get a second hand returned product if it got sold again.

  • OP, surface go uses PWM to control its brightness. Essentially it makes your device dimmer by cycling the backlight on and off in rapid succession. Try using the device at full brightness and if your eyes are fine, that's the problem. Not quite sure in terms of refund though. If that doesn't fix your eyes, then its nothing to do with the tablet

Yes. I have huge issues with PWM on surface. My solution is set it to 100% all the time and use Iris Pro to adjust the brightness.

Probably won't have any luck unfortunately, but you could always sell it online?

Also, it might be worth getting your eyes checked by an Optometrist, as you may need glasses.
