Neat when they drop the price of the better Ryobi tool because there is no Ozito equivalent. Pity Ozito have all most of the common tools covered already.
How would it go with an actual tree trunk? Need to cut a tree at the front, wouldn't mind making a raw timber bar /shelf. Guess i'd attempt to cut it with a chainsaw first so it fits, then use this to even out the cuts…might be cheaper to just buy a timber slab, but there's always the 'this is from our own tree'' element.
They do a great job on trunks. Chainsaw to make it flat enough to go through the thicknesser and then small nibbles at a time flipping the piece as you go. Schmick.
Great stuff, cheers mate
Probably the worst part would be the waiting - you do the rough cuts with the chainsaw then you'd need to let it dry out for months (years?). Otherwise the boards will warp as soon as you're done planing them.
If it's a healthy tree then yeah, it can take a while. They say a year per inch for air drying. If you're cutting down a dead tree, you could have more luck.
Be careful of movement. Be sure to clean the tree sap off the blade. (Spray oven cleaner, wait, and wipe - not turn on and spin, LOL.)
These things require regular blade sharpening to operate safely and maintain accuracy. Once blunt they will chew timber.
How many times can you sharpen these blades without causing snipe or irregular surface of the wood?
Asking how many times you can sharpen a blade is like asking how many bites you can take out of an apple - it depends how much you're taking off when you sharpen. The blades are 318mm long though, without a jig I don't know how you'd reliably sharpen them. Replacements are $54.90.
Snipe is caused when the back of the job passes the rear roller and can lift into the blade. It's not about blade length.
Depends on a lot of different things - type of timber, frequency of use etc. For DIY it should last a while. also when using reclaimed timber make sure any nails have been removed. Once the blade hits a nail it will chip. Also the surface is clean as if the timber has to travel over anything other than the rollers it will rise up and cause unevenness in the thickness.
Good advice, hit a few nails with my regular planer on old pallet wood - even if you get the surface nails out there is sometimes some hiding beneath.
Thank you, put it on openpay (bunnings afterpay) as I find bunnings much easier to deal with if having to return something.
Ahh. If only these were affordable when I first got into making stuff.
But can it make lasagna sheets?
Bought one, to finally use up my Christmas gift cards. The thing is bloody heavy, haven't actually used it yet though.
Went to 2 shops that supposedly had multiple in stock, both told me that can't find them any where and they must have been "five finger discounted" which I understood as code for hiding them out the back. They are either keeping them for themselves or they don't want to sell them at a loss.
Same story here, in SA
Seems like the same thing happened a while ago when they matched Ozito batteries and all the stock 'dissapeared' from the shelves but not the system
Don't know why Bunnings bother to price match if they're gonna hide the stockI'd call head office.
SE Melb some stores were out of stock but Oakleigh (now sold out) held one for me. Staff suggested getting it special ordered - they believe if Ryobi have any new stock would come in before the 10th.
I did a special order and paid today.
@birdie: Have you received it yet?
I’ve ordered one, my local store only had the display unit left. I also had a $50 gift card so only cost $248 out of pocket. I know there are better machines but I’ve been happy with my other Ryobi tools and I’m only a hobbyist so it’s not something I’ll be using all the time. Just will be another handy tool to have in my collection. I generally buy the tools as I have a project that requires them but this was just too good of a discount to wait.
Great post OP, grabbed one this morning =D FYI sale price ends 10/4 according to staff.
Yes that’s what the tag said
Stock is low to none in most stores. It has been ozbargained :) and some of us have little use for this machine but still bought it anyway, haha. I have placed an order online and see how that go.
Not surprised as there Max/Min is 3/3.
Picked up the last unit from Blacktown Bunnings. Box was little damaged so got an additional $20 off. Very happy!
Sold out across all Bunnings Vic stores, luckily you can still order it through special orders at that price 😊
Speaking of Ryobis warranty I have never had any problems with Bunnings at all. Also if you go to Ryobis website and register your new tool within a few days ( not sure how many ) in most cases you can get an extra 2 years added to the warranty, bringing some warrantys up to six years but not on the batterys
Cordless Tools only though. https://www.ryobi.com.au/register
Anyone notice the Ryobi thicknesser has been removed from Bunnings site?
Wonder if my special order will be fulfilled refunded or upgraded to the $1300 DeWalt
Not till you told us about it …
Now I can't stop thinking about it
I don't see any issues for consumers, Bunnings tend to look after us well.
Either fulfilling the offer, or something similar that does the similar task.
Hopefully upgraded if they are in a good mood.
Any Bunnings employees know what's going on?
Anyone still waiting their special order thicknesser?

Sorta need to compliment this with a jointer. I could've used this when I bought some timber recently. Had to leave it sitting for a month and the wood twisted.
