  • This is MSI Prestige line. Well, this is one of the lightest 14" laptops on the market, well enough built, but with a few design flaws and sub-par ports selection, so check the specs carefully before pulling the trigger.

upgrading RAM and HDD is a process that would make your eyebrows creep up well above the hairline, since you need to remove the motherboard. make sure you attach everything back correctly!

also the wireless module is 1x1, and the screen a bit dim.

otherwise yeah, a decent enough machine, but I would like to see it cheaper, since there are more reliable machines available in the price range.

    • Got any suggestions for a laptop for light gaming in this price range?

      • are you not happy with Dell G3?
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-G3-3579-FHD-Gaming-Laptop-i…

$1087 with code that expires today.

        • Ahhh, good suggestion. Thanks

          • @Dropp: but if you go a bit higher, you get much better machines. The one I have is Dell Precision 3530, it has an equivalent of MX150 with 4GB dedicated video memory, does that qualify for light gaming? i5-8300H CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a huge battery, 15 incher. if you go through me, you can get one for $1299 with 3 year warranty.

Also there's G5 which is $1100+, better build quality and cooling than G3.
            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-G5-15-Gaming-Laptop-8th-Gen…

            • @[Deactivated]: Yeah something with mx 150 like performance is exactly what I’m aiming for. Shooting for something around the $1000 mark though but the g3 seems a bit overkill.

                • @[Deactivated]: Wow looks like a great laptop and reviews are good too. Will definitely consider it. Thanks so much for your help :)

                  • @Dropp: no worries) enjoy. to be honest I think that you can have much better hardware for a bit more, but the choice is yours in the end. g5 is robust machine, and Precision mobile workstation is top shelf when it comes to reliability and productivity. for $1300 it is an absolute steal, these units sell for $2700 retail.

  • I've had the MSI PS42 8RB-024AU model, also from Computer Alliance, since it came out in August last year. In terms of internals, this was a good deal at the time and an even better deal now. Anything else in the same price range you will compromise on RAM, CPU, and GPU.

However, in terms of build quality, this is the worst laptop I have had in the last 20 years. Two weeks after receiving it there was a scratch on the screen from the pressure of the keyboard edge on the screen when the lid is closed. The lid itself is flimsy and can bend considerably, which is the main problem. I couldn't return it at the time as I was on the road. Six months later and the screen scratch has got even worse. Basically there is a massive scratch across the screen, and now two dead pixels, at the exact point where the raised edge between the keyboard and the track pad meets the screen when the lid is closed. After 6 months, this laptop was in a worse physical shape than my 8 year old macbook pro.

MSI warranty support has already warned me that this is "customer induced damage" and is not covered under warranty, so I am reluctant to send it to Sydney and then pay $132 just to be told that this is not covered under warranty. Personally I think it is a major design flaw but I have no evidence to back this. Has anyone else got the same laptop?

So in summary, if you are never going to close the lid to this laptop, it is a great laptop.

    • Would it be better if I get one of this?

      https://www.fruugoaustralia.com/celicious-matte-antiglare-sc…

      • Yes that should help. You might still get marks on the protector, but it will probably save the screen. If you have already bought the laptop, you will need one of those screen protectors, even though the screen is not glossy.

If only I knew about them when I got mine. But the thought didn't even cross my mind as I've never had problems with scratched screens before.
