Breville - BCG820BSS - the Smart Grinder Pro

The perfect coffee needs a precise amount of freshly ground beans. But adjustments in grind size require different grind times to achieve a consistent dose.

Breville's conical burr Smart GrinderTM uses Dosing IQ technology to automatically adjust the dose whenever you change the grind. Choose between 'cups' for French press or Filter, and 'shots' for Espresso to get the right dose for your coffee's needs. You can even tweak for taste.

The Smart GrinderProTM still has an LCD display, 450g removable hopper, and comes with two grinding cradles for dosing directly into 50-54mm or 58mm commercial espresso filters. In addition, there's an air-tight storage canister, suitable for plunger or filter coffee.

Amazing price for 65" OLED. Still waiting for 77" price drop :(

    • The C8 77" is at Myer for 9K. 1K cheaper than everywhere else. But for that kind of money, I'd want HDMI 2.1 future proofing, though you're looking at 16K for the 77" C9 series successor.

  • The LG OLED65B8STB has been reduced to 0 quantity on eBay :(

    • +1

Says more than 10 available ?

      • Yeah, just realised it's likely because I'm in the excluded delivery zone - Canberra - despite having a store down the road :)

        • You can still buy it. I think you just have to change your post code then message them. We had to do something like that a few years ago for our tv but we picked it up

  • Breville - BCG820BSS - the Smart Grinder Pro

Having lived off instant coffees at home, I'm now quite tempted to venture into coffee making. Wifey won't agree to bulky coffee machines I reckon so I'm thinking this product might be more palatable. Question though… other than this product (and the coffee beans), what else do I need?

    • +4

A coffee machine.. if you don't want bulky then buy the breville Battista express which has a grinder built in. Or perhaps an aeropress (there was one on here recently for around 30$)

      • +1

Yeah. Was looking at the Aeropress deal that was posted some days ago yesterday.

        • The Aeropress is great! Been bringing it to work and its easy to make another fresh cup of coffee. I'd strongly suggest to get one if you're not keen on a big coffee machine.

          • @monchee: Is the coffee from an Aeropress similar to that from a plunger?

    • -1

The quality of the coffee is proportional to the size of the machine. :)

Not 100% rule but valid most of the time.

Also… instant coffee should be called “caffeine drink” :) - from my point of view there is no much similarity between real coffee and “instant coffee”.

      • -2

Machine barely matters it's all in how you brew it.

      • LOL! My wife's not into coffee so the chance of getting a hulking coffee machine is very slim.

        • +2

          Time for a new wife

    • +1

You need some way of making the coffee, so either a filter system or espresso (there are other options but these are the most practical). If your wife doesn't want you to get an appliance for it I'd recommend a filter system, probably an aeropress as sli mentioned in another comment. There are many resources online to teach you how to make coffee with an aeropress and good recipies for various beans (time, water temp, etc.).

    • +1

Cheapest and least bulky way to get into coffee making would be pre-ground beans and a french press. From there it scales up through hand grinder & aeropress, pourovers etc all the way up to huge coffee machines.

I did the aeropress thing for a few years before getting a Breville Oracle (retails for $2500 but grabbed one for $1500 thanks to OzB) which has been great. Aeropress is now relegated to travel & camping duties.

    • +1

For tentative first steps, keep it simple and cheap. Buy:
      (1) a decent hand grinder (Porlex Mini or Hario mini) and
      (2) an Aeropress.
This is a huge leap above instant coffee, and you'll soon know if taking the effort to make yourself good coffees is something you want to do.
(an alternate option for the Aeropress is a stove top Bialetti, which are currently on sale at DJs and Myer)
      Enjoy!

    • I had similar "request" from my wife 10 years ago…
PM if you want to hear my path. :)

Thanks, got the OLED55B8STB for a very good price. Super excited!

Does anyone know if the soundbar can be used through an A/V receiver as a center speaker?

  • Need a good TV deal for Melbourne! :(

  • Seems no luck if you are in Melbourne. Tried to buy the Yamaha ATS-1080, but "This code can't be applied to your order." Why bother giving the option of shipping it to Melbourne then?

    • +1

Is your account registered to Australia? Works perfectly for me in Brisbane, it's probably an issue with your account rather than the code if it's coming up with that error

      • Thanks! I ended up opening a new Ebay account, as I could not figure out how to change my original details. Worked a charm!

    • +1

No issues here, bought one went through fine.
      Delivered to Melb (Truganina)

  • Picked up the mouse. Cheers!

    • Picked up one as well. $84.4 ($78.4 + $6) seems like the best deal this year so far and couldn't wait. Time to retire my ancient G700 mouse.

  • Soundbar is HDMI 2.0, not HDMI 2.1.

If you're planning on getting a new TV this year or any year after this year, note that the soundbar will not pass through HDMI 2.1, it will lower it to 2.0.

    • HDMi 2.1 has a maximum speed of 48Gbps vs 2.0 which is 18GBps. But that really shouldn't affect the sound in any way right?

Tempted to get the Hisense - 65P6 but don't really need a TV right now, have a 45" from Big W and it does the job fine. Think I should wait a little more and then for this? Saving $200 is a big deal.

      • +1

No doesn't effect the sound output. The only thing you'll gain is E-ARC support, which let's you passthrough DTS-X and Dolby Atmos from Netflix, Prime, etc. Even then you'll need a TV that hasn't been released yet. Only the flagship TV's will have that feature this year.

        • Only the flagship TV's will have that feature this year.

Every LG OLED TV released this year will have it, including the C9, which based on the C8, C7 etc will be $2k in a year for the 55" and $3k for the 65".

I thought they'd only do it on their flagships as well, so it's good to see them doing it to every OLED.

The C9 will have 13ms input lag on 4k and 1080p and releases next month, but as with all TV's pricing will be stupidly high until the end of the year.

          • @NobalaKoba: I would classify all LG OLED models as flagship. Picture quality has very little difference if any between them. But it seems their highest end LEDs will have it also.

      • +1

Won't effect sound, but it's meant to be able to passthrough HDMI. The HDMI output port would be restricted to HDMI 2.0

If you're not using the HDMI output port on it, it doesn't matter.

Honestly, if you're saving for a new TV to last a while, I'd recommend waiting for the LG TV's to release this year. They have HDMI 2.1 which brings a LOT of good features, especially for gaming.

Even if you don't want a TV with HDMI 2.1, once they're out in the wild (starting next month) I expect other TV prices to start dropping to compete.

        • Good to know!

  • From previous posts I understand the ATS-1080 is great a option which i am considering. Would anyone be able to tell me how the bass performs on the in built speakers? and also the loudness?

    • +2

Hi a really good sound demo with music in stereo, surround and also hooked up to a TV has come up for this model.

The name of the video Is koshertech Yamaha yas-108 soundbar review (soundbar for a budget) so go watch his video.

    • +1

I have the combo from this deal, 55inch lg oled and the Yamaha soundbar. Sound was really muddy via ARC and there is an odd issue that in this mode you can't change the sound mode.for the tv output. After.changing back to inbuilt speakers I changed.the sound mode.to cinema,.switched back to ARC output and things were much better!

Bass deems pretty good, you cananually adjust or add bass extension. Not sure if this one or next up you can add linked bass, but good enough for me in living room.

    • Thanks for the replies! I ended up getting one. Can't go wrong with the price.

For anyone who has an OLED + PS4, do yourself a favour and buy Tetris Effect. By far the most beautiful use of an OLED screen I have ever seen.

Is there click and collect available for the mouse?

  • Why won't this bloody sound bar go any lower in price? I've been waiting over a year for it but it's always around the $160 mark.

  • Is anybody aware if I can connect this sound bar to my 43'soniq TV.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/soniq/soniq-e43v15d-42-5-fhd-led-l…

    • +1

Yes, you should be able to use the audio return channel on the HDMI cable (ARC), but if any issues your tv and the soundbar also have optical audio.

  • Should the p6 not get its own post for that price?

  • No shipping in WA :(
