      confirmed this works

      • Yeah just PB and placed an order with Officeworks!

    • OW has dropped its price to $129. No more price beating for now.

mixed reviews on durablity tho :v

Yep, I just had a look on at the reviews for these on Amazon.com and it looks like 15-20% of them fail within a few months. Not reliable enough for backup. Could be useful as a streaming drive through.

      • Any recommendations on a more reliable external hard drive?
Looking to buy one atm and know nothing about these things

I've had excellent luck with the Western Digital drives with regular usage. I use to be a Seagate fan up to the 2TB. I have 8 year old Seagate drives still going strong. Then I had a large number of failures with 6-8 3TB and 4TB models as well as a couple of their portables. I consider Seagate drives like a giant recycle bin now, and won't touch them.

According to Backblaze who use consumer drives to provide commercial storage, HGST is even more reliable but WD bought HGST. Google the Backblaze reports and you'll find stats on some drive models that they've bought in bulk.

        So, Amazon was "dumping" those

        • $250 (shipped) 10 TB family members

        …seen in a previous OzB Deal…?!?

Maybe the box is one of those,
        with "too few vent holes"…?

If so, perhaps an external fan
(on hot days) is a workaround?

Any1 here "lose" such a drive?

        • Or maybe Seagate is just trash in general.

I use this model HDD as extra storage for my Xbox. The two USB 3.0 ports are useful, too. They never put enough on the console.

  • Is it possible to use this for xbox storage and to stream media while connected to PC?

    • No. Xbox storage is a different format.

      • +1

You also can't partition the drive when using it for xbox storage, just FYI.

  • Do these ones fall over easily? might explain the failure rates.

I have a problem with knocking stuff over on my desk, wish they had the feet to sit flat.

Take her to the bedroom instead. Lot safer.

  • Do you need to plug these into a powerpoint whilst the USB3.0 is being used? Have not bought external storage in a while, so asking genuinely.

Yes mate. External hard drives (large boxes like this) need external power supply.
Portable hard drives (the ones that fit in trouser pockets) do not need external power and feed off USB2.

      • Thanks for that, that's really helpful!

      • Well the portable hard drives are also external.

Key point: anything with a 3.5" disk needs mains power, while the 2.5" disks can be powered via USB.

  • I’m looking for few hdds to populate my synology.
This looks like a good candidate for shucking.

    • Assuming a woodchuck could shuck it … and my guess is they can.

  • I have the 6Tb version on my desk, I have no trouble with the drive toppling, or heat (prev poster complained about few vent holes - phooey). However the drive conducts "seeking" sounds into the wood of the desk, and so you might want to sit it on a mouse mat. I paid extra for this model to get the 2xUSB3 Hub ports it included.

  • FWIW from the Amazon reviews this drive seems to be an Archive drive and uses SMR.

    • I saw that too but now I believe it's only for the 6TB+ models, would be great to have confirmation on the 4TB though.

      • Haven't cracked it open, but the one I bought yesterday identifies itself as a ST4000DM004-2CV104 which is probably a 5425rpm "TGMR" SMR drive. I'm just actually using it for backup so can get away with the lower write performance but wouldn't use it for much more than that.

        Sneaky sneaky Seagate :(

  • I had a drive like this but 6gb and it started developing bad sectors, I stick with western digital now.
