Gameology and Cardtastic in Melbourne have the set of 4 Magic the Gathering Challenger decks for 2019 for $117 each (just under $30 a deck and below the US MSRP). These decks are based on top competitive Magic the Gathering metagame decks and are complete with a 60 card deck and a 15 card sideboard. They can be taken to your local game store and be played straight out of the box and have a fighting chance and can be upgraded if need be on the cheap.

This is a great product for new players starting out and for those wanting to get back on back in to the game. The decks include a lot of Standard format staples and if you where to buy each of the included cards it will cost you at least 2.5 times as much. The product comes out on April the 12th.

  • Can you click and collect from Gameology's eBay?

  • Yeahhhh if you rock up to fnm with a stock deck pretty sure you'd get smashed pretty hard unless specifically playing against other stock decks.

Apparently izzet drakes is worth about $100 on paper.

    • But a lot of stock decks have exclusives or offer cards that are worth more than the deck costs retail.

    • The decks are pretty good stock wise. $15-20 in upgrades on each of them will make them really good.

    • I'm 2 minds about this.

In the short term, total value > price for sure but as Saf puts it "…part of the reason why Wizards feels comfortable overloading Challenger Decks with value is that most of the chase cards will be rotating from Standard (and losing most of their value) in about six months. As such, Challenger Decks are a way for Wizards to cash in on these cards' equity one more time before they end up close to worthless…"

And it's almost been like this with a lot of preconstructed product since 2015 with the likes of the Magic Origins Cash (ahem, Clash) packs featuring a Fetchland, Coco, and Dromoka's command which hit $15 at the time..

Aside from the Standard-rotation price deflation, price/value will also equalise through increased supply of the chase rares/mythics.

Having said that, the survives rotation/Modern cards are tempting. If the White Weenie & Golgari can be flogged off for MSRP on ebay then you are probably ahead?

  • I was really into MTG when it first came out. I had probably close to 1000 cards at one point, including some of the rare ones… the Mox set, a few Black Lotus, Time Walk, a number of Tropical Islands, Time Twister. Ended up throwing all the cards away a few years later. Who knew they would become so valuable… sigh…

    • Hindsight is 20/20

    • Even in 1994 black lotus was worth $150…..and u just ended up throwing them away….. I still have my black lotus that I payed $250 for in 1995. It makes me smile eveytime I look at it 😃

    • With a set of dual lands you propably had enough value in cards today to put a deposit on a house.
