Recommendation - Colour Laser with Duplex Scanning for Home

I have an OKI MC361dn printer which is actually a great machine - cheap to run, reasonably fast but the colour prints it does are atrocious. Not sure if this is due to the machine being an LED laser or just not being set up correctly (I have fiddled with most of the options) but I cannot get it to print a decent photo/picture.

I am looking for a colour laser printer which can produce reasonable colour on plain paper. I am not looking for photo replacement (I have an inkjet for glossy photos) but just prints a correct colour profile that is passable as a photo for a kids project.

I need:
- Duplex print AND scan (auto sheet feeder)
- decent quality colour printing
- not cost the earth (and possibly OEM toner replacements)

Any suggestions?

  • What is the actual problem with your existing printer? Are the colours just wrong? Have you tried different papers?

    • I have tried a few generic papers (reflex etc) and not expecting a great output on plain paper from a laser but the colours are muted and the images appear blurred like they have been through an instagram filter to make it look all arty. The actual clarity of text and graphics is still sharp.

      • If text and graphics are sharp, it's hard to understand why images might be unclear. I did a quick Google for reviews of your printer, and didn't find anything too bad. Are you using original toners?

If you search for colour printer test images on Google, you should be able to find some high quality images to run some test with, to make sure that it's not the images you're trying to print that are the problem.

        • I'll post some test pics when I get home.

          • @leyton01: Looking at it now it seems to be a complete lack of detail which makes the image look worse.
I have a side by side with a colour printer from work and then the OKI set to fine detail (1200x600dpi) and it just seems to me missing heaps of detail:

especially around the ear and eye.

            • @leyton01: The OKI looks about average.

But the clarity in the Ricoh is amazing. What is the model number of the Ricoh? Is it a $$$$$ printer?
