NOOB ADVICE: 144hz Monitor for up to $300

Hey guys. I've searched here a bit but even though I've found some topics about monitors, I am absolute noob when it comes to computers. My mate got me list of components that I've bought recently and I am going to get my pc built for regular pc stuff, but mostly gaming and Solidworks and other CAD shit.
From what I've found I know I want following:
-144hz refresh rate
-24" (or possibly more if it would fit my price range and computer specs)
-doesn't have to be curved
-PSI/VA
-300$ budget
-lowest delays possible

My PC specs:
-i9 9900k
-Asus ROG Strix RTX 2060 OC 6gb
-HyperX 16gb RAM
-EVGA G2 gold 750w power supply
-Noctua NH-D15 cooler
-Samsung 860 EVO SSD
-Fractal Design Meshify C case

Thanks.

  • Asus VG258QR around $320 when Futu Ebay has it on 20% discount from the slightly inflated price $399. Normal prices are around $370.

    Acer KG251QF around $280.

I had my eye on the Acer for a long time but changed my mind to the Asus.

    • Great advice man, thank you. I'm gonna check it to see what can I do!

      • I read through the many replies and I think my research for the same budget monitor over the last few weeks might help you more.

G-Syn is Nvidia and Free-syn is AMD. Free-syn is much much cheaper. Also Free-syn is becoming compatible with Nvidia cards. They weren't compatible with each other before.

TN: Fastest and worse viewing angle
IPS: Best colour fidelity and best viewing angle

For everyday usage TN is more than sufficient. You would only need IPS for professional work where colour fidelity is the priority or if you are viewing it at an extreme angle.

        • Yes, I´ve already noticed that VA monitors would be best option for my use…
So to wrap it up, in order to use full potential of my setup, I dont need to look for G-Sync monitors ?

          • @Mixer900R: I am sure that RTX cards support Adaptive Syn which means both G-syn and Free-syn. The biggest issue is finding a free-syn monitor that supports Adaptive Syn. You will only find that in the latest models so you need to check the monitor specs individually.

Yes, your safest bet would be getting a G-Syn monitor but they are outrageously expensive.

The Acer I recommended does not support Adaptive syn so you can cross that off. Take a look at the Asus it is listed as supporting Adaptive syn.

            • @DarkOz: Yes but they are both TN panels right ? and thats probably not what we want, or is it ? what do you think about MSI Optix MAG27C 27inch

              • @Mixer900R: Yeah both TN panels. Unfortunately I can't help to find what best suits you if you are looking for IPS/VA.

                • @DarkOz: I get it. I just thought TN panels are the worst from those three groups.

                  • @Mixer900R: There is no such thing as best or worst unless the IPS/VA panels could match the TN panel speed.

I actually prefer TN because I don't need the best colour fidelity for professional use and I never view the monitor on my desk from an angle.

If you need the best colour fidelity then TN is obviously not for you. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with TN panels.

        • also how about this ? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/442484 its for good price, you think its good monitor for what I need ?

          • @Mixer900R: I only narrowed my research on a 24-25" 144 TN gaming monitor for around $300 so anything else I wouldn't know enough to commend.

  • +3

I got the Dell gaming 144hz 24" (TN, 1ms, freesync) for just on $300 In the last 20% off sale they were in.

Also your processor seems like overkill for that machine.

    • TN panels looks crap compared to IPS though. There's no reason to focus on refresh rate unless you're really into competitve gamplay. 5ms is perfectly adequate.

Agreed with the processor comment. Should slap your friend for suggesting you purchase that i9 for a gaming rig and then only having $300 for a monitor…

Should slap your friend for suggesting you purchase that i9 for a gaming rig and then only having $300 for a monitor…

It could be useful for his "CAD shit". Not sure why he'd pair an i9 with a SATA SSD though.

        • Why? What's wrong with i9 and SSD?

          • @Mixer900R:

Why? What's wrong with i9 and SSD?

Sorry, I should have expanded a bit. SSDs are good, but the 860 EVO SSD is a very slow old-tech SATA SSD which will give you about 480MB/s reads. The newer-technology NVMe SSDs like the 970 EVO will give you about 2,296MB/s reads.

An i9 with a SATA SSD like the 860 EVO is like getting a Ferrari and running it on E10 petrol and cheap tyres.

            • @eug: How would I recognise it in game ? I mean where would I spot a difference between 860 and 970 while using PC ?

              • @Mixer900R: Anything involving the disk will be faster with the 970, e.g. game loading times. The 4K random write times on the 970 are about 32% faster too, so the whole system should feel more responsive overall.

                • @eug: That makes sense. However I was using HDD until i bohught this SSD so I think it would be HUGE difference comparing to HDD. So putting it in your style, it would perhaps be like getting a Ferrari with twin turbo conversion running double the horsepower and no tyres, just rims ? :D

                  • @Mixer900R:

However I was using HDD until i bohught this SSD so I think it would be HUGE difference comparing to HDD.

Ahh yes it will definitely be a huge difference, especially if your HDD was fragmented previously.

So putting it in your style, it would perhaps be like getting a Ferrari with twin turbo conversion running double the horsepower and no tyres, just rims ? :D

Haha well… yes you could say that! If your PC hasn't been built yet, maybe you can swap the drive?

                    • @eug: it hasnt been built yet but unfortunately my budget is already crying out loud and i still have to get keyboard and mouse (i was given options by my mate when he was building components list for me and obviously i picked best GPU and best CPU i could get)
So i will probably stick with it for a while and then i´ll change that SSD or just buy additional 970EVO

        • In fact. I wanted top end option. I chose to have best processor on the market because I don't want to care about it for a couple of years from now on. And since that's probably the most expensive part in my build I want to be top end so later when I would like to upgrade, I can buy better gpu, ram, etc and then just over lock my CPU. But I don't need better GPU now, I don't need more ram, I don't need bigger monitor. I play games like arma and dayz etc so it's really overkill but I want to get it sorted out for a while so I don't have to care about my pc for a couple of years…if that makes sense

          • @Mixer900R: The CPU shouldn't be the most important or expensive part of your build for a gaming/CAD machine because it is not a bottleneck. The GPU would be followed by RAM/SSD. You need better knowledgable friends because that i9 is completely wasted money for you.

            • @Hybroid: Okay. I will think about it, thanks. Any idea about what monitor should i use ?

      • I am also working on advanced flow simulations projects so my previous pc was almost always maxing out CPU performance. So in my case CPU was bottleneck, thats why. Youre right to some extent, but thats not relevant to this topic which chase for 300-400aud IPS/VA monitor with 1440p and 144hz refresh rate

    • Which one?

    • Also why almost every monitor I came across with on internet has AMD Free Sync and very little of them come with G-Sync? (I guess I need G sync since that's Nvidia gpu feature right)

  • there's plenty of resources, this one does great reviews: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/high_refresh_rate.htm

when i was looking 4 years ago you could get those korean 24" 144hz screens for ~200-250, seems its finally hitting mainstream now.

they got 165hz and 240hz monitors now too so have a think before you buy

if you can catch a sale for one of these it looks to be of decent value: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/409125

    • So what should I get? VA ? IPS? 24"? 27"? 1080p or QHD?

      • depends on your use case

hardcore competitive gaming - visual fidelity is not required, go for the hz/response time, TN/VA are faster than ips, 24" seems standard here
more casual gaming - qhd/144hz gives you eye candy and great performance, you can also go 27" or even bigger.

        • I'm not even close to competitive gaming. For me gaming is just the matter of couple of hours to entertain myself or to free my mind, no competitive things at all.
Then I do Solidworks and Fusion drawings as a side job so again I'm not going to spend 12 hours a day behind screen. I watch videos for a while then I play my Arma 3, Fallout, DayZ and similar shit for couple of hours and that's it😄
So you reckon I can get decent IPS 27" with 144Hz panel for 300$? Or should I rather stick with 24"?

I´ve found those, what do you reckon ?

          https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/730…

          https://www.umart.com.au/Acer-KG271A-FREE-SYNC-27-TN-LED-192…

          https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/731…

          • @Mixer900R: those are decent 1080p screens, which is good for competitive because you push less pixels so faster. but the main drawback with 1080p is it is getting outdated now, the trend is higher res with industry pushing 4K resolution.

if you can stretch your budget these QHD(1440p)/144hz screens look good value, the future is higher res and bigger sizes ;)

            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AOC-CQ32G1-31-5in-QHD-1ms-144Hz-…

            • @abctoz: I know. But thats too much both price and size, I´d like to have max 27" and price max 400. I found this to be probably winner for me MSI Optix MAG27C 27inch , do you know about better alterative ? Curved is not mandatory

              • @Mixer900R: idk man both are 144hz, the 1080p and 27" at $400 seems slightly expensive, the one i linked is 1440p @ 31.5" and only $422 now with discount.

                • @abctoz: unfortunately 32" is a bit too much for me… i mean i dont know if i can even fit on my table :D

            • @abctoz: also why is it here so cheap comparing to other sites ? https://www.ebay.com.au/p/AOC-C32G1-32-LED-LCD-Curved-Gaming…

              edit:I´ve just noticed its C32 not CQ32

              • @Mixer900R: seems like normal price: http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=qhd+144hZ&spos=…

if you really strapped for space then maybe just get a ~$300 1080p screen

but big screens look awesome and are great for productivity too

imo screens are only going to get bigger, you can get almost 50" 4k TVs for ~350, which is insane

                • @abctoz: ive tried to use that coupon on that AOC 31.5" screen but it doesnt work, it says It cant be used for that, any ideas ? You convinced me to buy it :D

                  • @Mixer900R: no idea about that… but ebay has regular sales so you should be able to get it sooner or later

the aoc 31.5" look to be great value, but i'm no expert, and i suggest you do some more research before buying, make sure no major problems reported by people etc

                    • @abctoz: quite interestingly for that price, reviews look very good. I am very interested, having read all your coments here and considered all options i think it would be good even though i have no idea how am i going to fit it on my table :D

  • I think I have a winner, what do you guys think ? https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/730…

    • +1

It's 1920x1080 resolution. What's the point of having an RTX2060 & overkill CPU if you're displaying low res???

A 4-year old graphics card can play modern games on Ultra settings at that resolution. You have your component priorities all wrong unfortunately.

To use your weird analogy above, you have bought a Ferrari but only use it for city driving up to 60km/h and have never even taken it on the motorway..

      • Then what should i buy ?
What do you think is the best ultimate "motorway" or "Race circuit" for 400$ that would fit requirements ?

      • I actually agree with Hybroid. Your SSD and 1080P monitor doesn't let you make use of your CPU and GPU.

I only have a 2600X with RX580 but I still got the NVMe M.2 970 Evo on another OzBargainers recommendation. I am going to get a 1080P monitor to suit because I intentionally not aimed for 1440P or 4K.

        • Yes. But I still dont know which monitor should be good, they are some good tips but they´re either too big, or TN panels or too expensive.

///Is this better ? AOC CQ32G1 31.5in QHD. I guess that wont be bottlenecking my setup

          • @Mixer900R: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo92reqrQ34

If it's within your budget I don't see why not. Got solid reviews.

            • @DarkOz: Well aparently its 120$ over my budget :D But Ive learned something thanks to this topic and 120$ more is not that big deal comparing to that increase in performance that monitor offers

              • @Mixer900R: Yeah I love it when I build a new PC every 7 years. I always blow out my budget by $500 and in the space of 2 weeks I learn what I had missed out for the years.

Have fun with your new system.

                • @DarkOz: 😄 Yes Thanks buddy, Thanks for help as well.
I am already trying to deal with the fact that several weeks after I finish building my pc there would be new components and my pc setup will be outdated 😂
