      Crude price has increased 50% in less than 4 months to over $60bbl, this has more to do with increasing competition on transpacific routes

      E.g Syd-Mel can set you back $650+ for a 1hr flight on QF

        And airlines who some years ago put purchases in place (to deal with the peak oil scenario) where they run planes with much more efficient engines (burning less fuel) and optimize their flight plans, cargo loads and so on.

    I need to get to New York in late Septemeber but have no idea on best routes for $s. I'm thinking Perth-NZ-San Fran-NY is a LOT of travel time maybe its better to go through Asia or the Middle East.
    Usually, I book all travel myself online but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed this time with the various options available.
    Looking at one-way at the moment as the plan is to travel from NY into Canada for 3 weeks, so my return will be Canada - Perth

      You can fly PER-HKG-JFK and return JFK-YYR(stopover)-HKG-PER, all on Cathay

      Last summer did something similar, flew with Cathay PER-HKG-JFK, and then flew out of Vancouver a few weeks later YVR-HKG-PER. Worked out around $1300 all up with Cathay, if I remember correctly. Took a train from New York to Toronto, which was fun, but the last few hours were a bit tedious.

      Did the internal Canadian flights with Westjet.

    Air NZ seem to be a lot cheaper for this route than anyone else - is there a reason? Flight time seems reasonable, and was $400 cheaper than the next airline when I checked for a June date.

    Does anyone have a review? I once flew from Melb to Wellington, and it was fine Nothing was provided - you had to purchase beer and the like, but that's not really an issue for me.

    Thoughts/comments?

      I flew with them to SF in 2008 no problems. In fact I’m doing it again in October.

      You’ll find that on flights to the US meals and drinks are provided.

      Unless you're flying direct from Oz, this is by far the best economy product you could choose. Easy transit in a small and quiet airport, no transiting in the US, and probably the best service in economy.

      I booked SYD -> LAX two weeks ago on Fiji via Nadi for $850. They had similar price for SFO at the time but I think that sale has ended (or maybe the dates make a difference). Kicking myself we didn't wait, would much prefer to be flying air NZ. Flew SYD -> LAX in 2015 with them and used their sky couch option which is well worth the extra $$ when flying with kids. The lay over didn't bother me in the slightest and I thought it would. Otherwise it was an uneventful flight, which is exactly what you want for a 17 to 20hr transit
