The same casting experience available on Microsoft's Surface Hub and Windows has finally arrived on Xbox One!

Microsoft's Wireless Display app lets you wirelessly project your Windows or Android based devices to your Xbox One.

  • Instantly share photos you've just taken with family and friends without having the photos sync through a cloud service.

  • Share video clips you’ve recorded with family and friends

  • Project your favorite websites with Microsoft Edge to the biggest screen in your house
  • Mirror your Android games to your TV so your friends can watch
  • Play your PC games on your Xbox while using the Xbox controller as a gamepad
  • Use your PC on your Xbox One and use the Xbox controller as a mouse/keyboard

Note: Projecting protected content, like Netflix and Hulu are not supported.

To get it working:
Install and launch the app on Xbox, then within Windows press Win+P and select 'Connect to a wireless display'. Then you should see your full desktop/application on your Xbox!

Hot damn, just saved me from buying a nvidia shield. Just wanted a way to stream games to tv.

    • +3

Steam streaming is very good, tried it? It will stream to many different devices

      • +3

I found that the Nvidia Shield was leaps and bounds better then the steam link

    • +1

Shield will probably give you a better media experience. Less power and quieter too. My one try at Steam streaming seemed OK. You can still use xbox controllers, tho the better latency of the xbox360 dongle is supposed to be best. Works with all Bluetooth, PS4 controllers etc too.

Sounds great, but it's not really a deal - more of an announcement.

    • +16

It's interesting. In some ways it fits here, as it saves people from buying a new device specifically for this. In other ways, it doesn't. More of a cost saving measure, than a bargain. I wonder what the best way is for things like this to be incorporated on here. Same for things like games being added to game pass - there's a lot of interest, and it saves people purchasing games they otherwise would have. However, it doesn't technically fit as a bargain.

I do enjoy seeing things like this in this feed, for one.

      • +1

That's what the forums are for…

        • +5

Forums don't have enough visibility from the general public. Perhaps if the main feed could be customized to include a mix of deals + forum posts that you subscribe to, this could work. I think a lot of people really enjoy seeing this type of content in their feeds.

          • @snoopydoop: Great idea. A good place to air it would be in the "site discussion" forum. We have this segregation for a reason.

  • +5

Very handy. Good to see Microsoft continuing to give love to the Xbox and expand it beyond gaming.

  • +6

This works way better than I expected it to!

Also works great if you have a Foxtel login and use watch.foxtel.com.au, I was going to subscribe to Kayo but because I have my parents login I dont have to anymore. Since moving from the FoxtelGo app on the PC that wouldn't allow you to go full screen without blurring the image, now when full screen using the website it stays clear.

    • Oooh. Gonna give this a go, was trying yesterday to find ways to cast Foxtel go to my tv (bit of a hassle directly connecting via HDMI to laptop).

Edit: was a laggy mess for me unfortunately.

Can anyone get this to work on a wired network? I can only get it to work over Wi-Fi.

    • +1

It's using miracast which is not only terrible, but it only works over wireless. Stick to steamlink, steamplay and GeForce now.

      • +5

That's a bit bizarre it won't work over a higher speed connection. MS should have had the resources to build something themselves.

    • Lol, it only just occurred to me it's called the WIRELESS Display app…

  • +1

Does Microsoft intend to charge for the app after 30 March? If not, then why is there an expiry date?

  • Ummm not to be annoying but there was a wireless display app, Microsoft removed it a couple of years ago… And now they are realising another one. Sometimes i don't understand the Microsoft Xbox decisions.
Like they removed multi app support from Xbox as well

    • +2

Multi app was removed as apparently it was taking too much ram for some other features they wanted to add (probably just more ads on the dashboard) and their metrics showed hardly anyone used multi app.e

    • The original app was only ever a "Preview" and never fully released. This is that same app but now full release.

  • +1

Not sure whether it belongs on Ozbargain as a deal or a forum post, but either way happy that I've seen this :D

  • Just wondering what's the max resolution ot can stream.. 4K 60??

  • -4

This probably should’ve been a forum post but it’s got enough upvotes and comments now that the mods won’t do anything about it. Good work!

      You'll be right love!

  • +1

How much is it usually ? D:

    • +1

however much a steam box is?

    • Miracast is about $20.

  • +1

Sick. Was never going to, but now I'll never need to buy a Chromecast.

  • So I need to install in my Android device as well right?

    • no you cast your screen to xbox like you would to a chromecast

  • Is there a way to stream windows to windows (HTPC) to play pc game with controller but not steam game?

    • +3

Yep. You still have to use steam but go into Steam library and from the top menu select "games" then "Add a non-steam game"

After you have added the game you can stream it like any steam game. It does have some issues occasionally if you are trying to play with a controller but you can usually fix that with a few tweaks.

      • Let me try see if it can stream CEMU Wii U emulator.

        • Should work. You can stream your desktop via the steam link. When you're streaming just click the power button then choose "minimise big picture" and you get access to your normal desktop.

          • @GunnerMcDagget: Stream OK but not the controller on the HTPC but since the host PC not too far I can still use the controller directly from the Host.

  • I wish i knew about this before i bought an Nvidia Shield.

  • Damnit I just bought a chromecast for Kayo

  • Can I use this to mirror my android phone to my Xbox?

  • +1

umm I cant get it to work, and there doesn't seem to be much information of it around. I press Windows Key + P and "project" comes up, then i select "second screen only, and nothing happens.my xbox one x is in the correct app, and they are both on the same network. Any tips? WHen i press menu on the xbox one controller, theres no allowed devices or blocked devices?

    • +2

Your computer must have WiFi and a graphics card that supports Miracast. Ethernet will not work for the PC, but the Xbox can be on ethernet.

To check if your graphics card has Miracast:

      • Press Win + R to open Run dialog
      • Enter dxdiag
      • Click No on prompt
      • Click Save All Information…
      • Open text file and find Miracast
      • thanks. My GPU is an RTX 2080, and has miracast. My PC is connected to the network via Ethernet. I dont have a wireless card in my PC. :S

Yay! This has been in beta for years! About time it was released to us plebs

  • How's the lag?

  • Are there any hidden options or tricks to adjust the display resolution?

Our Xbox is outputting 1080p to an old Samsung UA40H5000 TV and works natively full-screen.
I've tried casting from a Xiaomi Air 13.3 which is running 1920x1080 and this fits the aspect ratio but is displaying smaller than full-screen, with a border all the way around.
Also tried from a Samsung SM-T585 Tab A, which I'm not sure what resolution it runs, and this covers the full screen but the top and bottom are being cut off.

This could be handy if I could get it to work better with the display but I can't see any options to fine tune?

Has anyone seen this screen, when trying to install this app?

It looks like you don’t have any applicable device(s) linked to your Microsoft account. To install, sign in on a device with your Microsoft account.
I have the Xbox one, PC and surface connected. When I googles this I didn't get to much help.

  • Can u stream Telstra mobile afl games?

    • I’d guess not since it doesn’t stream protected content.

  • I tried this app today. It fairly work with some games. I was streaming PC to Xbox One and it looked decent. However the input lag is insanely bad.

  • Does this only project display not including sound?
If sound also, does it support 5.1 multichannel?
    Important for gaming and movies!

  • Just cant seem to get this thing to connect. Have tried with xbox one on wired and wireless, PC on wired and wireless, and both devices on wireless. Xbox tells me my PC is getting ready to project, but always shows disconnected at the top of my Windows screen.

Wondering if its an issue with my Nvidia 650m, Optimus combo on my laptop.

Might have to stick to Steam link.
