  • No ODD!

    • Well spotted.

      • yeah you dont need it too much but at this price and size a blu ray or dvd burner should be included really

    • +7

A LOT of 13.3" laptops are designed for portability, and think about how many people use disc drives nowadays on a regular basis. We all use external HDDS now unless you use blu-ray, which a lot of us don't.

      • -3

No, CD's are still very common place. ODD is still definite a bonus to have.
Its the reason I picked a Toshiba Portege over the Asus. Lighter and with ODD

        • Just out of interest, where did you buy the Portege?

        • +3

I just use a portable USB ODD myself now when I need one; perhaps once a month or less! ;)

In six months time if…hang on a minute! :p

      • -3

This is a joke, if some techhead doesn't use ODD, they assume everyone or the majority doesn't use ODD. The guy did a favour by pointing it out to the people who need ODD, and all you can do is tell him/her is wrong or mock him/her.

There are still a lot of people who use ODD (People who have backups of media, people who travel and other who have software on discs that are too much of a hassle to copy [not everyone wants an external ODD]).

Not everyone wants to carry a thumb drive or a heavy external HDD.

        • +2

Biased ignorant fools thats why. I myself dont use ODD, but yeah, I accept the fact they are very much common and apart of day to day lifes.

    • +4

I can't even remember the last time I used my ODD in my desktop. I've managed to get around it fine with my UL30VT that also doesn't have an ODD.

    • +8

      No ODD!

And no floppy drive either. Does it have an RS232 port?

  • -7

Under an inch thick! How amazing! 1.78kg! Thats less than 2kg! This must be why it is called the "thin" and "light" category. By these standards, a regular 13" macbook pro is "thin and (almost) light".

    • +11

Sure, for slower processor, smaller HDD and price tag of $1,399

      • Was not trying to make a statement on the merit of a Macbook, just commenting that this is not really thin and light, more roadwarrior.

  • +1

no ODD, but it is nice to see Windows laptops reach apple territory for thin and light. For comparison Macbook Pro 13'' is 0.95 inches and 2.04kg.

    Bear in mind

    • it is also carrying the weight of a slot loading ODD
    • Macs have significantly better resale value than similarly specc'd PC equivalents.
    • Macs have significantly better resale value than similarly specc'd PC equivalents.

Usually people don't buy laptops based on a resale value… they buy them based on specs and quality.
Macs do have a better resale value due to the hype of crApple, similarly specc'd PC equivalents but there's a premium for owning a Mac.

      • Macs do have a better resale value due to the hype of crApple

The higher resale reflects a longer lifetime. Because OS-X, like Linux, is much less bloated than Windows, and will run happily on older hardware with just a memory and disk upgrade.

I have just upgraded my old 660MHz Eee PC 701 netbook to Xubuntu 11.04, and it runs perfectly fine (Abiword for note-taking and Google Chrome for browsing).

You mean I could just upgrade my old 900MHz iBook G3 to Snow Leopard? :)

        • You mean I could just upgrade my old 900MHz iBook G3 to Snow Leopard? :)

Almost. I was running 10.4 no problems on a 450MHz G4 after installing 512MB RAM.
          Tiger supports G3 as well.

  • +1

Hate to point this out guys, we have the slightly better version with win 7 pro for slightly less.
Only till midnight for our mothers day special.
Normally I dont post on other deals, but I could'nt ignore this one.
    Sorry
    https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=1072

    • It's $798.20 with $10 cash back so how come it's slightly less.

    • so you selling it for $799 + $29 for delivery = $828

      • MLN version has built in Bluetooth, and windows 7 pro, that's at least $20 plus $100 value. Win 7 pro for networks at work and uni are a must. I also heard something about our battery having a larger capacity but I cannot verify that.

        • +2

Win 7 pro for networks at work and uni are a must.

          Why is that?
Win 7 HP is fine =\

        • +1

you sell the Asus U31F-RX112X8 model and the one that jbhifi sell is the U31F-1YR-RX132V and only different is Windows 7 Pro. And battery is the same 8 Cell Battery.
and with windows pro you get to connect to VPN networks which most of us wouldn't do . But you still can connect to normal networks at home/uni or at work with windows Premium.

        • Don't forget bluetooth

        • +2

          ..

        • The in-built Bluetooth and win7pro are def worth the extra cash! i have a laptop with bt and one without and always find my self using bt transfer with my phone vs finding the usb. So it can be very useful.

Also MLN, any chance of a deal on the u36. I'm waiting for you guys to do something special so i can grab one! ;)

      • +1

Guys its $828 if you order it online becuasue of postage, if you bought it in store it is $799, no cashbacks no waiting, straight up, and our version has integrated Bluetooth and Windows 7 Pro which is worth a lot more than $10, $30 or even $50.

        • any word on the u36???

  • Guy's in jbhifi parramatta told me that they can add free case and free Logitech M215. not a bad deal.

  • What kind of battery life could you realistically expect from this?

        • you are right on that good find.

  • +1

    good laptop, good price!

  • Does anyone know how this would compare to the samsung QX310-S01 which is the same price at OW?

    • Seen the QX310, two of my friends have it. The area around the keyboard, I must admit is VERY nice.
Con for the QX310: only 1 USB port.

    • +1

Asus is better than the Samsung in this case
      ASUS
      13" display
      Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz CPU(@ 2.933 GHz)
      500GB HDD
      4GB RAM
      Intel GMA HD graphics
      Wi-Fi
      Webcam
      8-cell battery
      Windows 7 Home Premium

      SAMSUNG
      CPU: Intel Core i5 460M
      Processor: 2.53 GHz (@ 2.8GHz)
      RAM: 4GB
      Hard Drive: 320GB
      Screen Size: 13.3"
      Graphics: 512MB dedicated
      Bluetooth: Yes
      Optical drive: SuperMulti DVD burner
      WebCam: Yes
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
      7 hours battery life
      Manufacturer's Warranty: 1 Year

      Comparison
Asus has 500GB, Samsung has 320GB
Samsung has slightly slower processor at 2.53GHz/2.8GHz, with Asus being 2.66GHz/2.933GHz
Asus has no ODD, Samsung has
Samsung has Bluetooth, whilst (pretty sure) Asus doesn't

I would go for the Asus than the Samsung

    • +1

It has been discontinued, no stock in the country.

      • @jv you left out dedicated graphics vs. integrated.

And pistonhead - you mean the samsung was discontinued?

      • Bummer, i was liking the sound of the Samsung. It's got 3 important things that the Asus doesn't have.
        1. Bluetooth
        2. ODD
        3. Independant graphics card

The hard drive size doesn't bother me, i can put my existing 500gb 7200rpm inside, and put the 320gb in my old lappy, to sell.

Slightly slower processor means nothing to me. Upgrading to an i5, from a C2D 1.83ghz.

        • MLN version has BT! that only leaves 2! :D

  • +2

just bought one from JB at southland. didn't really get my haggle on but still managed to get $20 off some accessories. from what i've seen so far it's very fast and very light, feels to be the perfect office laptop. good buy.

    • Office laptop? Way to use the portability! :P

      • +2

let me rephrase that: i'm a uni student, so i use it mainly for word processing AKA microsoft office!

        • You could also have been the 'Lincoln Lawyer'! :p

  • It is $996 now on jbhifi website
