Thanks Bought one from Officeworks - Price matched.

    • Nice. Which price did they match?

      • +1

edit: they matched at $249 then gave the 5% price beat, in case I wasn't clear.
        $249 * 95% = $236.55
TC's state that electronic coupons are excluded.

First time I've ever done it. I just called the 1300 number, gave them the officeworks product code, the name binglee, my customer number, and plugged in my CC details on the keypad when they asked. It's going to be a click and collect for me because of no stock. I can already see the order in my account online.

    • Already delivered today. Same day delivery in Sydney from officeworks.

  • If anyone can assist with a noob question please. My understanding is I have FTTP. We were supplied with a modem/router or just router perhaps (not sure) when we signed up with belong some years back. If I am trying to improve the wifi in my house would this help in doing that and can I use it with FTTP or do I need a modem as well?

    • +1

For FTTP the NTD (NBN box on the wall) is the modem so you just need to connect a cable from the WAN port to the UNI-D port on the NBN box.

You can use a router or a modem/router for FTTP. So this Netgear for example will work fine.

      • Thanks Clear. Am I understanding it correctly that I should get better wifi in my house using this Netgear rather than the generic one sent by Belong? We have heaps of devices connected so I think the one sent by belong is struggling to keep up.

        • +2

Yes that's right. This router would be better in everyway than what Belong have supplied.

          • @Clear: Thanks again Clear

            • +2

@Indie: At this price you might as well go with an Ubiquiti UniFi access point, if you are only buying the Nighthawk for better Wi-Fi. The UniFi Lite and LR models are cheaper too.

Advantages: Superior stability, will handle vastly more Wi-Fi clients, optimal ceiling-mount placement, manageability of clients, still receiving regular firmware updates

Disadvantages: Installation required for best result, not an all-in-one solution, some initial configuration required, more jargons to learn

            • @Indie: You will just use the modem supplied by Belong as the gateway, the wifi on the supplied devices from most companies are crap and locked down, I replaced my supplied Huawai modem too which was causing issues on it's own that service provider couldn't do anything about besides send me a new one

Don't forget to disable the WIFI from gateway the 2 wifi networks will get in the way, let the router do all the lifting.

Once you plug the Netgear in it runs an auto config and you just have to select what suits you best.

Netgear products have taken me next to no time set up and very little in the way of issues with them. I had one that came DOA faulty antenna that was an inconvenience but nothing insummountable

              • +2

                @Toons:

You will just use the modem supplied by Belong as the gateway

No, Indie is on FTTP. The modem section of the Belong device is inactive. If Indie purchases the Nighthawk, the Nighthawk will replace the Belong device.

      • +1

I was under the impression that there is no actual modem for FTTP. The NTD isn't a modem because it's not converting between an analogue and digital signal.
MoDem stands for MOdulator/DEModulator which refers to converting an analogue signal to digital and vice versa eg ADSL, ISDN and Dialup all came down as analogue wave (sound) so they all needed a modem. There's no modem on FTTP because the signal is entirely digital.

I could be wrong though but this was my understanding.

        • +2

You're correct but it's what we refer it to in the industry to make people understand it better.

          • @Clear: I think it's actually confusing people more.

            • @mattyman: Currently in an FTTP connected state so it really comes down to where you are.

  • Getting nbn FTTC here in a month, I chose not to get an included modem with my plan (from Aussie broadband).

Is this the kind of box I need to give me wifi? I believe theres another nbn box that you get when the nbn gets connected is that right?

    • +1

Yes, this is what you'll need.

      • -1

My understanding for FTTC is that you'll need a router that supports VDSL? And I can't seem to see if this does support it?

        • It is NBN ready.

        • No, NBN supplies their own VDSL2 modern (call the NCD) for FTTC, you then need a router to connect to it.

        • Oh yes! Everyone appears to be correct. Any standard router will work fine on FTTC :)

edit: Haha first time I've ever wanted to neg myself!

I'd try to hold out if you guys are just updating modem/routers. This model is WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 is scheduled to be released this year. WiFi 5 was released in 2014 and is around 4 times slower, depending on what is measured.

    https://www.howtogeek.com/368332/wi-fi-6-what%E2%80%99s-diff…

    • +1

How much will these new routers cost though and will current devices support whatever wifi 6 is ?

      • No, it is as much hardware as it is software. It would be the same price give or take, as it is an update.

      • Valid point as most real reviewers will state categorically you don't need to spend a fortune, I'm guessing we will see the introduction of of the 10g ethernet ports too with them since the theoretical wifi speed is 10g

I don't thin I've seen a consumer device for the masses support this yet besides the modems which I'm happy to be corrected on

Quote from one reviewer and the Modems are out but not all devices are 802.11ax compliant and won't be for a while still

"You probably don’t want to think about spending any money until your most important devices also support the standard. That means no upgrading until at least your laptop and maybe your phone are Wi-Fi 6 compatible."

    • +6

WiFi 6 is just coming out now, under the moniker of 'ax' (802.11ax). A few models have been announced and are shipping. Eg. NETGEAR AX6000.

But these are very expensive devices, $400usd. Unless you have 5 people simultaneously watching 4k Netflix, or…honestly I'm not sure what needs to pull 600mb/s over the WiFi! Currently there are VERY few devices that support ax, I think the first will be the next wave of iPhones next year…with laptops and other phones to gradually support it over the next few years.

For $235, this post here seems like a worthwhile buy, especially if you're upgrading from a stock ISP device.

      • No reason to hold out for ax unless you have a real need for it and devices that support it.

      • +1

AX routers have been out for months now since last year.
        https://www.pccasegear.com/products/44253/asus-rt-ax88u-dual…
        For example.

And Samsung Galaxy s10 support AX wifi already.

        • Hahahahaha
"RT-AX88U features a top-of-the-line 1.8GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU that is more powerful than many desktop processors."

You could have to go back a long way to find a desktop CPU that would lose to a 1.8Ghz ARM Cortex-A53.

      • Samsung S10 supports iirc.

      • it's nearly half most other nether distributors price in Oz checked them all from Aus Netgear site.

I'd say it's good for even a hardcore gamer for a good couple of years still.

The prices on the ax modems would have calmed down by then too so it's an unusable expensive toy like buying a track Ferrari got the power and speed but can't use it on the roads.

AX capable routers have been out for months since last year.

      • -1

No they haven’t, these are like the 0.5 version. Only halfway there, the full version isn’t released yet. These are early releases for commercial basically eg. Shopping centres.

        I work in the industry.

        • -1

So tell Asus that cause there selling there router as having 802.11ax or wifi 6 as some call it.

  • It should be $231 delivered through Futu ebay store with the PORTAL20 code https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/443588

Bing Lee might be better though for anyone who lives near a store for pickup

  • This hasn’t received the newest Duma OS has it? People have been waiting over a year for it while the old netduma has had it for a while now.. it’s a bit of a gamble buying this router cause there haven’t been many firmware updates. If you have issues like some people have, you’re pretty much screwed.

I might take the gamble though for this price. It’s usually selling for a lot more..

    • If you get sick of Duma OS, it might be possible to use OpenWRT.
The XR500 has the same hardware as the R7800 which is supported by OpenWRT, so it is possible that support will be added in the future (someone has made a patch for it against 18.06.2, so if you have an XR500 and are willing to compile it yourself, you can try it).

      • +1

I think the whole point of people buying this router is for DumaOS and its features

        • At this price, it has pretty good hardware even if those gaming features of DumaOS do not appeal to you.
Frankly, if a router is not getting firmware updates with the amount of bugs and security flaws being found these days I would want to move to a different firmware if at all possible.

    • What feature are you waiting for?

what OS version are you talking about? ill let you know what mine is running.

      • I’m not sure. I was reading the forums a couple months back and people kept asking about when they’ll receive the new firmware (this went as far back as January). I think that version of dumaos had ping assist? (Or ping something everyone wanted) but the current one on the netduma did not. The Duma devs couldn’t confirm whether netgear devs would implement that feature in the new firmware so I didn’t go ahead with my purchase at that time

        • Yeah when i researched before buying i found both post's asking when they would get this feature and post's saying it's already out which it is.

          • @Axelstrife: How long have you had it for and ho s it going for you? So many people having issues with drops outs over at the forums. I wish Duma partnered with Asus..

            • @johnnytran: Thats the xr700 with the wan port dropping which can easily be temp fixed by using the sfp port.

  • +1

Aussie Braodband FTTN here. This will require bridging from current modem to this one correct? , as this one does not have modem that will work out of box? Was researching this to replace current telstra modem that works with Aussie broadband.

  • I'm on NBN HFC so this should work?

    • Yep. You have a NBN modem this just plugs in

  • I'm still on ADSL2 using an ancient Billion 7700N. Will this also work as a Wireless N modem/router?
