Office Chair That Is Comfortable for Sitting on for Long Hours

I recently bought a $150 gaming chair that looked comfortable and after using it, I get a numb and weird feeling that I hate after 30 minutes.

So my question, is there a chair that is designed to specifically to combat this issue and is more comfortable for sitting on for long hours?

HM Aeron or the Steelcase Leap pick one.

    • Also Ergohuman. Or the new HM Cosm I'm planning on checking out to replace my 8 year old Ergohuman.

    • I’ve got the Herman Miller Sayl at home and an Aeron at work. I actually prefer my Sayl at home as it’s more easily adjustable and offers pretty much the same level of support and comfort. For $700 with 5 years parts and service warranty you can’t go wrong. I’ve had mine 4 years and they’ve replaced the gas canister that blew and the arms which were cracking.

This. I went and bought a second hand Aeron for $850 two months ago for my office and what a difference it's made. No more neck pain, back pain, headaches. Very well made too. Would highly recommend.

I also got some Steelcase Leaps for the rest of the office and they are as comfortable but don't ventilate as well. If you're challenged budget wise they can be had for very cheap second hand. I would suggest following this guide to clean up a second hand one:

Ergonomic chairs, for example these from Officeworks. But it's generally an individual thing so what chair will be best for you will depend.

We all come in a whole range of different shapes and sizes. It'll be like buying a pillow or mattress - what one person finds comfortable, another might find completely painful.

Best thing to do is get out there and try the chairs yourself until you find one that you're comfortable with.

There are many options, but due to everyone having minute difference in posture, it's quite a personal preference. AS MENTIONED ABOVE, GOING FOR SOMETHING LIKE A HM, YOU'LL HAVE MULTIPLE ADJUSTMENTS TO FIND THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU.

Sorry, became uncomfortable in my seating position towards the end of the paragraph, I now know how OP felt.

Also; Gaming Chair != Office chair. Gaming chairs tend to be laid back further so not necessarily suited at a desk leaning forward/upright (if that's where you are).

  • I'm using the Secret Labs Titan, I've found it to be super comfortable :)

  • I've tried them all, I don't find any of them comfortable to be quite honest. But the best of the lot would be Herman Miller and Steelcase Leap. I still find my back starts to ache and the seat starts to feel hard if sitting longer than an hour though. Humans weren't designed to sit all day long, I really should look into a standing desk.

Spoken to an occupational therapist about the whole standing desk thing. Standing is just as bad if you're not moving around much as the whole issue is about holding a particular posture for long periods of time without movement. This person said whether you sit or stand doesn't matter just get up once an hour and move around for a couple minutes.

    • Standing desks aren't good for your back either. With a standing desk the only benefit is that you are moving, because you will need to adjust from sitting to standing many times throughout the day, as staying on either for long periods is what is "bad". If you are still getting back pains even on good chairs, I think you have back problems right?

Buro Metro. I'm in mine for about 10hrs a day. I think it comes with a 10 year guarantee for about $300.

  • Therapod chairs (made in Melb I think) are good.

The Therapod adjustable posture-support system has been declared a medical aid/appliance by the Australian Taxation Office so is exempt from GST.

  • Herman Miller Aeron. For the life cycle cost its worth it. Great warranty service if any issues. You just have to get over the initial up front cost. 12 year warranty. If repair needed they come to you. Look out for EOF year sales.

I have a cheap dining table from ikea that I use as a desk, which I put wheels on and it rolls perfectly over the top of my recliner, or really any chair in the house. I like to game in comfort. Could you put wheels on your desk and roll it over an existing comfortable chair? Or is that just not an option?

    • Milk creates are more ergonomic though.
