Evaporative Cooling Fault under Warranty

Hi guys

So i installed and evaporative cooling system in my house about 3 months ago
I have been using it this past summer
But now i get a letter from yarra valley saying my water usage has gone from 270 litres a day to 2700 a day !
I had a look at the meter the meter is correct and there are no leaks

I have called the people who installed my evaporative cooling and they will be coming to have a look as it is under warranty ( 5 year warranty)
But my question can i make them also pay for this excess water usage due to an error when they were installing . It will be hundreds of dollars

Thank you

  • Unlikely. I mean - hypothetically you might have a good legal claim/argument, so raise it with the installers if they do find a fault. But other than that and maybe posting a written letter, a few hundred dollars isn't worth spending pretty much hundreds more (not to mention hours of your time) to pursue it.

Come back once you have more details of if it was their fault and how much in extra usage (because evaporative coolers use water even if performing correctly) the fault cost you.

Around 50 litres per hour would be average. You been watering your garden during these summer months?

water usage has gone from 270 litres a day to 2700 a day

That's very wrong. Take off your 270 litres per day and you're looking at about 100 litres per hour every hour of the day.

As with @theclearout, I'd expect maybe 50 litres maximum per hour that you run it, including the bleed rate of a couple of litres per hour.

Even your 270 litres is high - I believe the Victorian average is about 160 litres per day.

The evap unit uses water to set the filters through which it sucks the air and in turn circulates through the house. The water flows through the filters and into the bottom of the unit, after a certain time the unit will flush out the surplus water as part of the self cleaning process.
So, check your roof when the unit is running periodic and if you see a continual dripping of water then something is wrong.
That aside there is no way a properly functioning unit could use the amount of water you claim.

The water corp in WA has provisions to help you out with excessive bills if you repair/replace and show proof. My parents had a leaky retic system while overseas and an expensive bill. The bill was waived after a plumber (yes, it had to be a plumber) put a certain valve in the system.

It's worth a call to find out your options!

  • Firstly 270 a day litres is not high for a 4 person household . We have initially checked and yes there is a continual dripping of water when the evaporative is on . I am in VIC i have also been told that if there is a leak or something similar we can maybe have some of the bill waived . Anyone have experience with this ?

We called the manufacturer and they said either its faulty or installed incorrectly
