Will Never Use Express Post Again - Once Timeframe Is Missed, It's Just Regular Mail

I urgently need to get some large database files interstate, so I sent an SSD via Express Parcel Post. Well, they've missed the next day delivery guarantee - annoying but fine, I expected it to arrive the next morning, but it hasn't. In fact, zero updates since the morning it was supposed to be delivered.

This has led me to the realisation: once the express delivery timeframe is missed, there is zero incentive for the item to be delivered in a timely manner at all. If I were an Auspost contractor I would prioritise items due for delivery today, and anything overdue I would give lowest priority. I imagine my urgent package is now kicking around the bottom of a contractors van, waiting for him to have a quiet day when he can deliver the overdue items.

I spoke to someone at Auspost, and they can't tell me anything - all they can do is leave a message for the driver. Since they can't even tell me if it's going to be delivered today or tomorrow, I have to buy another SSD and send again. This time I will use a proper overnight service, where I'm hoping that drivers are incentivised by overall delivery times.

PS - I'd advise against using the Express Post satchels, since they will not refund you if timeframe missed, but instead give you another satchel. Use a regular satchel and ask for express service - it costs roughly the same, except you'll get a refund if they're too slow.

Thanks for the link, but they've met their own standards so far. More useful to get the word out. I wouldn't have used them if I had known above.

If it is important, then don't use Aust Post. Use TNT.

    • Thanks, I will use TNT.

Many times you don't have a choice. It's the company you're buying stuff from that chooses the courier.

You haven't mentioned from where you were sending and where to. The next day delivery guarantee is only valid between the major capitals (Except Darwin) and anywhere outside those post codes the delivery is via std. post.

    From auspost.com.au:

Covers 80% of Australian business addresses, private addresses and Post Office Boxes.

Service operates between all capital cities (except Darwin and in Perth CBD only) and some major centres. Outside metropolitan areas guaranteed service is to and from townships only.

If your item is for an address outside the Express Post network, we'll use the fastest possible transport links, but it won't be covered by our Next Day Guarantee.

Melbourne to Sydney. I checked postcodes and it's covered by the next day delivery guarantee.

"Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway."

seems in this case, the estimation was wrong ;)

  • so I sent an SSD via Express Parcel Post. Well, they've missed the next day delivery guarantee

Did you send it before the cut off time and via a yellow express post bin?

Use a regular satchel and ask for express service - it costs roughly the same, except you'll get a refund if they're too slow.

Refund what? Thought the same rules applied.

    • You get a replacement Express Post envelope/sachet if it doesn't arrive next business day.

      • Ok well thanks for negging without reading what the OP wrote that I was replying to, which was

Which I asked, Refund what? Thought the same rules applied ie they give you a sachet if the express post misses the time frame for delivery

        • Sorry didn't read it properly.

          FYI, I didn't neg you.

          • @JimB: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh well, still interested in what the OP thinks will get refunded. But I'm sure that will be covered in the next post title

Used a regular satchel and asked for express service - it costs roughly the same, delivery missed delivery time frame, and all I got was a replacement satchel instead of a refund

    • Did you send it before the cut off time and via a yellow express post bin?

Yes, I handed to the lady at the counter, and tracking showed that it was in Sydney the next morning.

Refund what? Thought the same rules applied.

They'll refund the postage cost if you don't use a prepaid Express Post satchel. When using a regular satchel or box they will put a label on it and put a few yellow Express Post stickers on it.

      BTW, have a +!

      • They'll refund the postage cost if you don't use a prepaid Express Post satchel

Hmmm this is news….. Thanks for the heads up. Off to go read the T&Cs as I thought they just gave you a satchel back regardless.

        BTW, have a +!

        Thank you kind sir!!!

        • Even when using express satchels you’re able to get a money order it doesn’t have to be a replacement satchel.

I had 2 items delivered late got them for $10 each on eBay and they refunded me the retail price of $34.60 for the both of them they didn’t ask for proof of amount paid either. That was going through their complaints on the website they take a few days to respond.

          • @Luckyuser: That's great, though sounds like a mistake from their end, or you must be very charming! On the guarantee page it says they'll only replace the satchel: https://auspost.com.au/sending/send-within-australia/express….

@psdillon: I had 6 out of 8 parcels delivered late on Monday (yep horrible)

I lodge a customer enquiry via there website with the following details
              Tracking
              Posted from
              Going to
              Product used/paid
Proof (I say just a lodgement receipt, but that don’t ask for it anyways)
How you’d like your refund through money order or replacement satchel

I had all 6 enquires solved today by 6 different workers all sending me money orders

So maybe try lodging on the website next time

Just in case this info helps anyone
