I urgently need to get some large database files interstate, so I sent an SSD via Express Parcel Post. Well, they've missed the next day delivery guarantee - annoying but fine, I expected it to arrive the next morning, but it hasn't. In fact, zero updates since the morning it was supposed to be delivered.
This has led me to the realisation: once the express delivery timeframe is missed, there is zero incentive for the item to be delivered in a timely manner at all. If I were an Auspost contractor I would prioritise items due for delivery today, and anything overdue I would give lowest priority. I imagine my urgent package is now kicking around the bottom of a contractors van, waiting for him to have a quiet day when he can deliver the overdue items.
I spoke to someone at Auspost, and they can't tell me anything - all they can do is leave a message for the driver. Since they can't even tell me if it's going to be delivered today or tomorrow, I have to buy another SSD and send again. This time I will use a proper overnight service, where I'm hoping that drivers are incentivised by overall delivery times.
PS - I'd advise against using the Express Post satchels, since they will not refund you if timeframe missed, but instead give you another satchel. Use a regular satchel and ask for express service - it costs roughly the same, except you'll get a refund if they're too slow.
