Anyone used "advocate" on their pets?

just got a kitten a few days ago and i bought advocate (orange) which is one of those, one drop on the back of then neck to kill parasites, worms, fleas etc.. i think its a pretty popular product and ive heards alot of vets recomend it.

i was just googling how to exactly apply it when i came across some HORRIFIC Reviews it has.
https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/advocate-for-dogs-…

some reviews are a few years old so i wanted to know if anyone knows if they changed the formulas since then and any experiences anyone else has had.

  • I use Advantage for dogs. This is the same product, just doesn't cover worms. My sister also uses this for her 3 dogs. I use Cazitel for my worming. This is what my vet recommended. I am in non heartworm area so do not need to cover this. A work colleague uses Advantage for dogs. So far no issues and have not heard of issues. Did bit of research and some bad reviews on most products, so always hard to determine who is telling truth, or just one off experiences. But from my experience seems ok. Also, these products often come on special so keep a watch out.

I'm in FNQ and my pups swim nearly daily, did the topical and my golden got a tick 6 days after treatment and nearly died. I do Nexgard Spectra monthly now.

    • If you read Productreview on Nexgard Spectra it might change your mind. But, as in my previous comment, very hard to tell if common experience or one off issue.

    • Aren't you supposed to apply the topical drops and wait atleast 24 hours before bathing them or taking them for a swim? (ie. keep the coat dry following application)

I use revolution on my cats. I get it from budgetpetproducts cos it’s always on special when I need it.
My cats have never died from using this product or anything like that.

Yep we use it monthly on our cats. A friends cat didn't react too well to it though so I'd suggest using a quarter dose to begin with no matter what you use.
One of our cats has had a reaction to revolution but suits other one fine. So really depends on individual kitty. Cheers!

  • Yes, have been using it monthly on my cat for 7 years.

  • Yes I use it on my cat. It works well.

Use it on my cat, no issues apart from her running off when I break the seal and she can smell it.

Small dose to start. It's weight based dosing.

I have used Advocate on my dog every month since he was born (6 years ago). I remember when he was a puppy he would occasionally get an upset stomach a few hours after applying, but not sure if it was a side effect or coincidence. I love Advocate as it also does fleas. He also gets a specific worming tablet (Drontal) once every three months. He is super happy and healthy.

I have read about Nexgard and was horrified about what I was reading in the reviews. Enough to scare me off from ever trying it.

  • Oh my, i just read the link you posted, I have used it before a long time ago on my cats but I switched to revolution, I recently heard that other countries are making and selling fake pet medication and selling them to Australia as the "real product" when indeed it isnt what it is meant to be, I wonder if that is what's happened, but that is very scary and sad.

  • There are all strong poisons, you really need to discuss each "class of poison" with your vet to work out what's best for you. Our young pup was initially sick after NexGard when we first started (as recommended by all our vets). Later, Vet listed some alternatives to Afoxolaner. Dog doesn't like the taste either (meaty chew).
