Also shame that they don't let you cancel the order, if you contact their customer service within a few hours after you placed the order

No NFC means no phone in 2019

    • +3

Some of us do not want NFC on our phones.

      • yes and it's Snapdragon 845

        • +2

Just because it's last year's SoC doesn't mean it's crap. For such a cheap phone it's perfectly fine. If you want the latest SD 855 SoC you can expect to also pay 2019 prices accordingly, not ~$415.

Why on earth would you not want NFC on your phone? I can't think of any reason except being one of those electromagnetic radiation loonies…

        • I don't not want it but I'm sure as hell not gonna avoid this phone at such a great deal for not having it

        • +2

I had NFC on my last phone and I never used it once in 3 years. It's not that I don't want it, I just don't care about it.

      • Is "What is NFC?" a question I should ask one of my teenage children?

    • Yep for Google pay and now Myki ticketing in Melbourne ….paying for coffee with cash or card is so 2017 …..coffee shop at work even tracks loyalty if you pay with NFC so you get 6th coffee free.

    • See this comment everywhere - getting tedious.

  • Why aren't xiaomi phones sold locally? Oppo phones are but not xiaomi?

    • Because lacks features like NFC and band 28 so limited market compared to other phones if sold via stores eg JB, hn, TGG etc.

    • Different company

      • I know but isn't Xiaomi bigger than Oppo? I just don't understand why they are nowhere to be found locally. The closest I found was Kogan/AU ebay stores.

        • Probably carefully selecting markets to avoid going under like nokia did. Probably not worth selling in aus yet. Their bloatware, like the security scanner, offsets the cost of the devices

          • @belongsinforums: how did selling n markets like au, nz make nokia go under

            • @upbeat: Low sales. Lost popularity. I don't know. I'm offering possible reasons for xiaomi targeting only china and india

            • @upbeat: android arrival and Nokia trying to support their own OS made Nokia miss the market. Same as Blackberry not going with Android but trying to keep their own OS alive.

For Xiaomi to enter Australian market they would need to come up with Australian chargers, have repair centre, head office, hold stock, negotiate with retailers for floor space, etc and then get people to recognise the brand which takes time and money. In the mean time they would need to compete with Samsung, apple, Huawei, Oppo, Moto and lots of others who are already on the shelves.

Moto is Lenovo so they already have Australian presence. Nokia decided to make an Australian presence.

Xiaomi doesn't operate like most other phone manufactures, Xiaomi doesn't hold much static inventory in warehouses to save on overhead costs. Instead, the company mostly sell all its phones through flash sales (collection drops like in apparel) with a certain volume being held at stores in China. This is mainly due to their phones actually have very little profit margins as most of the majority of "R&D" is attained from other sources (IP not being heavily regulated). The real money is earned through the software on the devices MiUi, there are pre-installed apps which requires paid subscription and it's UI shows advertisements in apps by default.

Hence, the main reason why Xiaomi is only available through a proxy like Kogan is due to them paying for these overheads. However, Kogan bypasses this to a degree by sourcing all of their orders from Hong Kong and selling them higher with inflated conversion rates to cover overheads.

Best phone I've had to date. Nfc and band 28 haven't affected me. Fast processor is extremely underrated as a good phone feature

  • regret not getting this in Singapore for ~$400 for the 128Gb version.

    • When was it

      • mid Jan.

    • Next version is dropping soon so don't worry to much.

  • Could we do this again? I missed out.
