  • Great Headphones, the A40's come with a DAC mixer with solid a volume and game channel/chat channel fader.

Cheapest I've seen them. Thanks OP!

    • Words I never thought I'd hear.

  • Been tossing up between buying a set of A50 headphones or a small 3rd world country. Still undecided.

  • FWIW, I took my A50s back and got a vastly cheaper Rig 800 set and much prefer them (apart from the charging, which is easier with the A50s).

    • I did the opposite lol, imo the A50's sound infinitely better. You do however need to set them up correctly, they aren't a very plug and play friendly headset but then again I think Astro aren't expecting people who aren't interested in tuning them to their liking to be paying $400+ for their headsets.

      • Yeah, headsets are pretty variable across people :-)

  • Wouldn’t bother getting the A40TR’s. These TR mix amps don’t sound great by default, you need to find EQ presets online to load onto the mix amp to get an “acceptable” sound. But even then no one has made one that sounds normal like the old mixamps.

When I connect my A40TR to the TR mix amp there’s a strange echoy/metallic sound. Plug in into my old mix amp and they sound amazing. Lots of complaints on the official Astro forums but all the staff has done is denied there’s any issue. Apparently it’s got to do with the version of Dolby they have

Any speak for the mix amp that comes with the A50’s but I’d imagine they’re the same

    • I've never noticed this problem with the 50's. They aren't the same mixamp but I've got a few friends with the 40's and never heard them complain either.

      • I’m used to it now but coming from the A30’s with an older mix amp the difference is night and day. I mainly play FPS and explosions/gun shots are much clearer using the old mix amp.

I remember when I got the TR’s and was comparing the two the difference was very noticeable, gun shots had a slight tinny echo to them like you’re shooting them in a tunnel all the time. The overall sound of the game sounded different as well, if I hadn’t bought them during an eBay promo where I got a $150 voucher I would have returned them. Held onto them in hopes of a firmware update or something that would fix it but it’s been a few years now

Oh I have to add this is only noticeable while the Dolby button is pressed on for surround. If you turn it off the games sound amazing but the surround is off. The old mixamps sound like this with the surround on

        • Fair enough, I haven't played shooters for some years now, since BF4 I guess. I only use the A50's on my racing simulator, sounds amazing tbh.
