I bought the 55" in the last deal a month or so back. Very happy with the TV, can't fault it. My old TV was a 10 YO LCD Sony… I didn't expect the new one to have a greatly better picture but is seriously does, especially in the blacks, dynamic range and detail. Even the wife is impressed and has forgiven me for forcing her to 'learn a new remote'. Also greatly enjoying the smart services (amazon, prime, catch-up, etc) which have improved interfaces compared to the Fetch implementation and attaching a logitech keyboard direct to the telly via a dongle makes search simple. The Android interface is a little slow at times such as when returning from Netflix to the 'telly' but I see that an update to Android 9 is imminent so maybe that will improve. I no longer see a need for my HTPC and barely have a need for the media tank NAS but I'm hanging on to the Fetch box for recording… but if they improve some of the catch-up services further, I won't really need that either.

      • +1

Since you have a NAS there should be an option to enable DLNA on it and then your smart tv should be able to pick it up through the network directly so you won't need the HTPC.

        • +1

It should just automatically see the pc's if sharing has been enabled. Also pretty sure the Sonys can run VLC player which would play almost anything !!

      • The Android interface is a little slow at times such as when returning from Netflix to the 'telly' but I see that an update to Android 9 is imminent so maybe that will improve

Sony is renowned for including a woefully underpowered processor incapable of running Android TV smoothly. Pie won't fix this.

        • +1

Yeah, better off ignoring smart TV features in general and getting a shield or apple TV 4k.

  • Was very tempted by the last deal and kind of regretted missing it. Think im gonna have to pull the trigger this time. Although I am still weary of the issues they've had rolling out oreo and the automatic brightness bug.

  • I can reuse the same wall mount as my Sammy 4K 65"?

    I don't "need" this,
    I don't "need" this,
    I don't "need" this

    • This price is legit too tempting!

  • +1

Price will come down to 2k soon….holding out unless you really need TV now.

    • How do you know that?

      • The new sony TV’s come out in may, those TV’s were showcased at CES 2019.
        https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/655991/ces-2019-every…

They are still going to sell the current x90f alongside the new TV’s so not sure if that model will drop in price along with any others that they may keep selling.

Sony’s new TV’s coming out aren’t coming with a newer type of processor, they’re sticking with the X1 Extreme, so in that case wouldn’t it be most likely the current gen TV’s that have X1 Extreme won’t drop in price by much?

        • The A8 will be discontinued like the A1

          • @King Steuart: Didn’t seem to be out long. Why’d they disc. the A1?

            • @zqipz: New TVs are released each year and they phase out the old ones so as not to devalue them (among other reasons like no room to produce older models, wanting to push on with new tech, etc.)

It's how they keep TV prices high.. though it looks like times might be changing given 4K screens have dropped so much.. $10 an inch at ALDI today!

              • @King Steuart: Will come down but how cheap Aldi sells a 4K tv for doesn't really impact price of other technologies like oled. That's ignoring that Aldi typically aren't selling high end versions of sets either.

                • @Osiris: Ok but the last 6 words of my post doesn't define it.

                  • +2

@King Steuart: Never said it did, the response you provided to the question above is spot on.

But you also touched on the broader concept that these tv's will be cheaper soon. Its usually an area of discussion in nearly all these oled bargain threads and I wanted to address that as I think some people are going to be in for a surprise and wondering why OLEDs got so expensive when the new lines roll out and the prices go up up and away…at least until BF later in the year.

              • +1

@King Steuart: Yeah, thought you were talking about the tech, not the yearly model numbers.

  • +2

apparently Sony's processor makes their implementation (of LG's) OLED technology the best.

i own a 2017 LG OLED B7A model, does Dolby Vision, PQ is amazing. Reminds of me of high end plasmas (with infinite contrast) but with the benefits of 4k and HDR.

    • +1

So its an LG OLED panel with Sony hardware/software on top ?

I wonder how it will compare to the new B9 models this year that are supposed to have a big jump in processing power.

      • +1

All OLED TVs are LG panels, they're the only manufacturers of them

  • So Sony "Acoustic Surface" tech is just a heap of small Sound Exciters all placed around the rear side of the panel? kinda cool I guess, wonder how it translates is a sense of stereo separation being 65".

    • +2

The speakers are much better than other built in speakers.

      • +1

I agree. I thought about getting a sound bar or soundbase to go with my A8F 55" but have decided I don't need it. Cant really comment on the stereo separation but it is certainly adequate. Bass is surprisingly strong too.

  • I wanted to have Sony but already got Samsung :(

  • +1

    This vs 75 x90f?

Still so torn. I went 75 for the space I want to fill plus 4.1m viewing distance. But I'm a bit stumped with the whole oleds still burn in, not too suited to potentially bright rooms, high latency (ps4 user). :(

Definitely in the market as we speak/over the coming month.

    • I went through something similar not long ago and came to the conclusion, what would I appreciate more over the long time … size of screen or OLED picture.
Eventually I chose size because I don't have optimal viewing conditions (dark room, etc) and have no regrets.

      • Pretty much how I came to the conclusion of settling on the x90f. I looked at so many in the flesh for a good few hours and was convinced with the Sony in the end. I'm told the PS still performs well on them too. At $3040 it's very tempting! Next cheapest new was $3600+ with a super coupon combo. Everything else now is well over $4k.

      • Exact smae decision for me. I already had a 65 and knew I wanted something bigger. The x90f is a great tv. Maybe oled would be better but I won't know until my next TV!

    • My LG OLED has game latency with the processing enabled but when you switch the picture mode to Game mode the latency is drastically reduced and pretty much unnoticable

  • Heard you can get some cheapies with box damage at Langtrees.

Maybe not TV's but maybe there are cheapies with "box" damage.

        • +1

Aren't you just repeating the EXACT same joke OneMoreTune made?

  • Box damaged vs their seconds? Any experience with other TV's. Seriously considering the 75 x90f at $3040.

    • 75 x90f for $3040? Where??

      • Seconds in their store.

My error, Max $300 off so not as good at $3500. :'(

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SONY-KD75X9000F-75-X90F-LED-4K-U…

        • so tempted…even thou its seconds!

          • @IamAI: If you haven't already, there is a new post from the good guys with 15% off tonight. If their price stays the same, current ticket price is $3995, it'll be ~$3400 after the discount!!

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/439643

See my comment further down, it's brought the samsung, LG and Panasonic into the picture also so I'll be heading back in store today to ultimately see what I prefer.

Did you happen to put any of these other TV's into your research from a user perspective?

    • Although this listing says box damaged, the one I bought in the last deal was pristine and all other reports I've heard say the same.

      • Have heard the same. Just wondering if their seconds are on par also and would one still be protected by ACL for an extra year of warranty? Full 12 months is included on their seconds.

        • I did some research yesterday as they had the same TV as seconds for 2600.

There's multiple ozbargain/whirlpool threads on seconds and the negative feedback on ebay store. Seconds is definitely higher risk of a headache imo.

A lot more positive results from box damaged ones from what I could see both in feedback here, whirlpool and ebay feedback. Widely suspected that box damaged is just their way of clearing out stock without forcing other wholesalers to match it.

          • @Osiris: Same TV as listed in OP I'm assuming?

We're referring to the 75 X90F but your info is just as relevant.

Really torn. Definitely need a new TV soon as our reno is nearly done, just can't justify spending $4k plus. They haven't been anywhere near the sub $4k range for months so the only thing holding me back now is the obvious potential for future price drops not being too far off AND the bigger issue, potential for a sub-par quality panel being a second. :(

    • max discount is $300

    • Can you please advise what qualifies as 'seconds'? Are they just returned TVs that people didn't like?

      • While some of them could be that, generally seconds is refurbished so the unit had a fault that has now been repaired.

    • I bought a Sony with carton damage from GreysOnline and when I turned on the TV there was a big crack in the middle of the panel. Had to send it back and get a refund, their turn around time on the refund was not great either was out of pocket for a few weeks. Ended up just buying an LG OLED on an eBay sale.

  • Whats the difference between the KD55a1 and the A8F55?

both listed t the same price.

    Thanks

    • I have the KD55A1 and it's the 2017 model. There are no differences in tech specs to the A8F. Sony was so confident in its product, they made the 2017 model sit on a vertical stand (as opposed to an easel) and called it A8F55. Amazing tvs I should add. I moved up from a Sony 1080p LCD so 4k and HDR made a tremendous difference. Should also add that the X1 engine in these tvs upscales 1080p content very well, minimizing pixelation.

      • I have a1 as well.

A8F is better, based on Rtings it is brighter, and key difference is A8F support Dolby Atmos while A1 doesn't. That is quite important if you watch netflix and has Atmos system/soundbar.

    • Yeah, there's not much difference in practise. Just the bezel/stand aesthetics mainly. The A8F also used the 2018 generation of OLED panels, while the A1 used 2017. A slight bump in maximum nits, and a larger red subpixel. Overall you'd be hard pressed to tell one from the other in a dark room.

Purchased thanks, can finally replace my trusty 50" Samsung plasma

  • Wow, great deal.

    i'll keep watching and waiting

    I'm ready.

    $1000 diff between 55 and 65.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

  • Anyone using this in a bright room?

  • Does processor quality become redundant if I plan to always use a streaming box like Apple 4K?

    • No, in fact the processor will help dealing with artifacts caused by streaming particularly at lower bitrates

  • +6

Guys jumped on this deal last time.
Awesome TV but it isn’t for everyone.

Be warned that OLED panels require some regular TLC - ie. vary the content you watch, leave the power plugged in and on after putting in stand by mode, avoid long gaming sessions with static HUDs, avoid exposure from direct sunlight etc.

If this sounds like a hassle or feel your room is too bright, you might want to rethink before purchasing.

I had a 55’’ LG C7 before this and got the 65’’ Sony. Both TVs are fantastic overall.

While the LG might be overall brighter - the Sony’s upscaling and motion options are fantastic. I have actually got DVDs to look rather good with a few setting tweaks. I could never achieve this with the C7.
A few things to note tho:

    • Dolby Vision through the internal Netflix app acts a little funky at times such as with Sabrina, and is greatly improved via Apple TV4K. I have heard the Nvidia Shield is great too but it won’t output DV (if that’s a big deal to you.)

    • The general settings found OTB do an awesome job and most people will be satisfied with only minor tweaks here or there. AVSForums has a great community for more info. And a pro. Calibrator known as D-Nice posted his settings which really helped me.

    • You May read of a dimming issue but can honestly say it has never affected my set, so it’s effects must have been greatly mitigated by the latest firmware update.

    • Although the acoustic surface tech. Is heavily touted by some, I still feel a sound bar or additional audio setup is a must.

    • I just currently got an OLED myself (still in the box). Didn't know about the direct sunlight exposure. Does sunlight damage the screen anymore than a non OLED TV?

      • View on this is mixed. Some people claim theyve had direct exposure no problems, others claim it causes a darker image retention like effect that disappears with enough cleaning cycles (there's youtube vids showing this). Small amount report it being permanent.

      • I still think it’s not 100% proven yet but one can assume a great deal of direct sunlight to any TV would be a bad idea. OLEDs are super sensitive tho in just about every area you used to be able to take for granted.I feel the ends tho justifies its means.

    • I've had a pretty bad experience with OLED even though the picture is fantastic most of the time. Burn in after 3 weeks and the ABL is noticeable. Watching it in the daytime is little difference to an older TV as brightness is quite poor so you can't see the contrast and details as much. Really only effective in a dark room. Not to say it's bad but for a premium price you want the best and you don't get it alot of the time. ABL kicks in whenever a large portion of the screen is bright, so you will see it dim dramatically after about half a second or under… Very distracting to me. If they can fix these issues then it would be worth it. Not sure how OLEDs were released like that in the first place! Amazing picture but too many flaws. Hopefully MicroLED will be what OLED was meant to be!

  • How's the interface on this? Is it slow to open up menu and change channels?

    • It’s slow-ish at times. I followed Vincent from HDTVTest and his advice in the video about speeding up the interface and that def. helped. Compared to the LG tho, it lags quite a bit.

      • Oreo update rolled out to usa and uk last month, think part of the improvements with that update was the speed? Still to roll out to AU yet.

    • There's a bit of lag, but in reality (at least for me) not really an issue.
Android interface has slight lag, surprised if you lose even one second compared to others.
Interface going into the TV's setting while using Netflix, maybe 3 second lag at the worst till a menu pops up. Often its slow but not multiple seconds slow.
But how often do you screw around with that.
Changing channels doesn't feel slow to me.

    • Is it slow to open up menu and change channels?

My previous sony tv (bought 7 years ago) was like this. Annoyed the hell out of me when I had to go to a channel first before the TV Guide informstion would load up for that channel.

Seems like they've changed to android tv since then. But Ive opted for Samsung this time.

I just read the negative reviews on ebay Sony, and quote 2 as below:

Sony customer service rep tells lies Buyer: m***k ( 107Teal star icon for feedback score in between 100 to 499) During past month Feedback conversation
Sony 65" A8F 4K HDR OLED TV with Dolby Vision and Acoustic Surface (Box Damaged) (#283341810800) AU $3,647.00 View Item

So is this the same product in this post? can't make a decision if they have such feedback regarding the same product

    • +1

All Sony OLED since 2017 has Android TV, including A9F, A9G, as well as the LED Z9F, Z9G master range.

      • Which I think is a good thing personally and actually one of the reasons I WOULD be buying one. Wonder why no love from bryans? Just saying "a no from me" without any reasoning behind it is a bit strange. I played with my father in law's Sony 75" Television with Android TV and actually really liked it.

        https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2019/01/android-tv-is-good-now/

        • I've heard it isn't the snappiest UI.

          • @giventofly: Oreo update made it a lot of better I've heard. Still waiting for update though on A8F.

          • @giventofly: True, but that's the processor Sony uses, not a fault of Android TV itself. Apparently Android TV is great on the nVidia Shield.

  • I just ordered the Seconds one for $3500, should have waited for the Open Box, but who knew?

  • Got one of these in the last sale. If you want to connect it to a RCA on a soundbar or stereo get one of these 3.5mm to RCA cables and set the headphone out on the tv to fixed volumne instead of variable.

  • Anyone's tracking working yet? Received order email Thursday midday saying allow 2 hours for tracking to be active but still not working for me.
