Hi, does anyone know if a gas leak in the house is covered under home insurance policy ?
Is a Gas Leak in The House Covered under a Home Insurance Policy?

1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532)
Only if the house blows up.
Excess could cost more than getting a plumber to fix the issue
From what we have seen, things that wear out aren’t covered by insurance but secondary damage is. Our hot water system burst and they wouldn’t cover the hot water system but they would’ve covered the damage caused when it burst. The damage wasn’t bad so we didn’t bother to claim and just let it dry out.
Only if you smoke near it
Cue someone telling their adjuster from hospital: "No, I read somewhere the gas leak would only be covered by you guys if I smoked near it!"
Probably depends on your policy.
Certain things are covered and certain things aren't. Eg exploratory costs, repair of pipe costs, repair of wall/floor/contents getting to the leak…
Ok so had a plumber come out . There is a very small gas leak . He has checked the hot water oven and ducted and all are ok . He looked in the roof and didnt see anything . So its seems its the pipes in the wall so looks like its going to be a big job
Ah, that's unlucky. To confirm - the plumber's also turned off the gas, right?
Yes he turned the gas off from all those appliances and still there was a small leak
Oh good, I also wanted to make sure he's turned off your gas at the meter so you're not basically living with a small gas leak. It would be an inconvenience in terms of hot water, heating, oven, etc - but not worth the risk otherwise.
Unlikely to be covered by insurance unless something like a storm damaged the pipe. Wear and tear won't usually be covered.
Ok . The house is under 20 years old so wouldnt expect this from wear and tear
Unfortunately in this context "wear and tear" means anything other than some specific (insured/claimable) event causing the gas leak. An example would be high winds blowing a tree branch into your house and hitting the gas pipe. Anything else - even if the piping just failed very prematurely, wouldn't be covered.
Not covered under insurance.
We had the same problem. Plumber will run air through the system to isolate the leak…
most likely the leak will be from a failed weld… once isolated, they will cut a hole in the plaster to fix the leak… you will then need to patch the hole…
Thanks for the info . Do you remember roughly how much it was to fix
i think about $200
Oh thats not too bad
@Youi2018: YMMV. So many variables.
$200 may be the fee to fix the leak.
The cost to find that leak may be many multiples of it!
Yeh i know
@Youi2018 I have same problem gas leak in house.Called plumber in, did a leak test, confirms there is leak but couldn't find location. suggested could be leaks from joints located between walls. Checked with insurance and found out its not been covered. want to know how you fixed the leak and how much costs you? Thanks indeed
Be careful with plumbers
So what happened to us . We brought in a plumber and he “ couldnt find “ the leak . So he said we would need to put new gas pipes. Sent us a quote for $2000
We told my father in law about this and he said he knew a plumber . He came out and said he found the gas leak near our ducted heating unit . Fixed for $350
This is the second time within a year i have has to deal with dodgy plumbers
yeah, most tradies nowaday just want easy money job, putting new stuff in is much easier than finding the broken one and fix it. I had issue with my hot water tank last year and had to go through several to find one that can replace the valve, took him just over an hour, others just told me to get new one in for 5 times the cost that use same old inefficient technology.
Thanks Youi2018. let me get quote (second opinion)
from others plumber.
CALL YOUR GAS COMPANY FIRST.
And it'd depend on what caused it, but if it's just a maintenance issue like a broken hose, no.
