Car Insurance Claim When at Fault (Other Parties Insurance Company Hasn't Responded to Me)

Hi guys,

Last December I scratched the front passenger side in a carpark with my car. My rear door was not closed yet and I mistakenly moved the car causing a very small scratch. I left a note on the windscreen of the affected car owner with my mobile details. This was on the 24th December.

The 7th of January I received an sms from Allianz asking me for my insurance details. I have comprehensive insurance but I decided to wait from Allianz to find out how much they are going to charge to fix the scratch.

I have texted them twice about the status of the claim but so far I haven't got a response. As some may know, I have a hearing impairment so I can't talk on the phone. I'm wondering if I just wait for them to contact me or should I insist or email Allianz for the status of their claim?

Did I do well by not contacting my insurer until I see the claim? It feels just a very small scratch and I was hoping to pay less than the excess I have which is $500. It is my first time that I'm involved in an "accident" so I'm not sure whether I should talk to my insurer or not yet.

I had a similar situation in 2016, I gave my car to my ex and she reversed the car into another car behind. Obviously, I passed my details to the driver of the car and asked him to repair his car. my excess was $1450 so I waited for him to make a claim as the damage on my car was minor and not worth paying the excess. About a month later, I received an invoice of $900 from the other driver's insurance company asking to either pay it or make a claim with my insurance company. I decided to pay it. I think yours will be the same. But I suggest email them to make find out the repair status.

    • Thanks for this, sometimes I wonder whether such a small scratch is worth repairing or it can be fixed by polishing the car who knows? I texted them again Just to make them aware I'm not trying to hide or anything.

You can email them, or just wait and see. They should be keen to contact you.

They'll do more than just send you an SMS. I'd simply await the letter of demand and then you can either pay or lodge or claim with your insurer.
