Samsung 49" SuperUltrawide 32:9 144Hz HDR QLED Monitor $1369 (LC49HG90) @ Harvey Norman

190

Harvey Norman have the Samsung 49" super ultrawide QLED HDR monor on sale for $1369 (commonly referred to as Samsung CHG90).

Previously $2.5k, then $2k, and now it's starting to approach a more sensible price point probably due to the competition in the 49" space heating up (e.g. Kogan's $999 competitor, and other companies starting to ship 49" monitors post CES 2019). Next cheapest I can find is mwave for $1399.

And yes, before anyone asks, it's 3480×1080 making it relatively PPI for the size but in my opinion, I've been very happy with my setup for productivity and some gaming, and I paid closer to $1600 about 9 months ago at Harvey Norman (but thank you AMEX deal for the slight rebate). It's perfect for those who need to focus 'in the centre' of the screen where dual 27" monitors with the bezel in the middle would disrupt this (e.g. I often have the monitor set up so 1/4 of the width on the left and right side are my peripheral applications such as chat, email, WebEx, etc. and the focus area where I'm working is essentially the 2nd and 3rd quadrants).

Note that whilst it has a blue LED on the back (not RGB), there are no inbuilt speakers.

3480×1080 is just not very good for screens this big

Given the size you end up sitting further back from the monitor than normal which makes it less of an issue. I thought it'd annoy me as I moved from an X34 (3440x1440) but I ended up just loving the extra screen real estate. The Samsung software was rubbish though but Displayfusion made desktop management much better as I switch based on what I need to do (i.e. focus area vs. lots of windows).

Why is it on every post for a super-ultrawide monitor there are people complaining about resolution?
It's not made for editing or whatever, it's made for gaming.

      • Agreed… but that being said, there are 5120x1440 49" super ultrawide monitors now post CES such as the Samsung CRG9, but it won't come cheap.

Even if not for editing, I've just thoroughly enjoyed using the CHG90 for work when I have to review large documents - 5 A4 pages in Word can be read comfortably, or a giant Excel model with 1/4 of the side of the monitor with a PDF or Word doc on specs, or a spot for me to type my notes/review comments.

      • Because 1080p looks pretty trash on big monitors, especially with just text around the OS.

        • +1

Remember this is the same PPI as a 27" 1080p monitor (as opposed to thinking it's 1080p on a 49" monitor) but because of the width of the monitor, you'll probably sit further back than normal. As a result, IMO, it's fine - but I'm sure there are people out there who are more sensitive to this than I.

          • +2

@jace88: Yep I realise that about the PPI, perhaps you're right about sitting further back though. At work I had a 27" 1080p and to me it was just awful looking, especially when I upgraded to a 27" 1440p.

          • @jace88: But if you get a 27 you go for 1440p not 1080p that's is what 24 monitors are for

        • I had this sort of conversation only the other day about 1080p being too low of a resolution.

Apparently… It turns out that many people sit closer to their screens than I've seen.
Sure, if you're within 60cm of the screen, then 1080p might be on the lower end, but I'm personally 1.2m away from mine and 1080p is easier to drive at 144hz.

    • oh snap i was just about to say the same thing.

    super ultrawide

Who are the clowns that name this stuff? Wouldn't be surprised if 8k gets labelled "super ultra HD" as well.

    • Don't even know if it's an official name but seen it come up in reviews to differentiate it from the 21:9 ultrawide ratio.

    • +1

Well they shot themselves in the foot with the naming conventions starting with full HD, and then where do you go after ultra?

The same people who brand their TV's QLED I guess…. shit manufacturers say :)

Oh how cute, negged, probably from people that just bought one… never said the TV isn't good… QLED is just made up bullshit. Like 'retina display'

QLED is just made up bullshit

It isn’t and Google would have told you so. It’s a way to generate white from blue LEDs to backlight Samsung’s (and TCL’s) LCD panels. This light is higher quality white than “normal” LED backlight that use yellow coloured blue LEDs. That’s the technical justification, of course, marketing use it to seem similar to (much superior) LG’s OLED panels. Samsung abandoned AM-OLED TV panels but do make for smartphones and now, laptop screens.
By the way, since no one is using fluorescent tubes anymore, all LCD screens are LED backlit.

    Retarded resolution

  • Lol i would rather buy 21inch uhd over this

  • +2

Get this if you don’t want to use dual displays and just have one long display and split the view for gaming and work.

    • What configuration do you use in games to achieve this?
      Windowed mode with fixed resolution?

      • You can do picture by picture (ie show two different inputs next to each other) or do it via software (eg Displayfusion will help resize windows to fit whatever fixed resolution you choose).

  • -4

1080 @ big screen is just pain.

    • It's really not for gaming and as pointed out endless times already this is not a typical 1080 monitor, the viewer can sit back from it.

  • -4

    Resolution was no good

  • Nice. Will wait for IPS version.

Those who complains the res obviously didn't sit in front of 1 before and got a shit PC while expecting to run 4k 144hz.

    • -2

Huh?? I've got a 34 inch 1440p ultra wide I'd take over this 100 times over. It's horrible on the desktop at normal distances.

      9900k and 2080 system…so yeah nah.

      • -1

are you really comparing this to your 34" 21:9 ?

they're completely different thing and size and aspect ratio for different usage and different taste.

why are you even bother posting here then ?

        • -2

How is this for different tastes??? It's marketed for gaming. It's a gaming monitor. Like my Asus 34 100hz. It's not a normal aspect ratio, like mine. So yeah it's completely related.

And it's a horrible low resolution at that.

Cant handle anyone else having an opinion? Or are you going to generalise with another childish insult again?

And what's worse this costs more.

      • I went from an X34 to this and ended up greatly preferring this. Sure the X34 does better in some games and uses eg photo editing, but overall I found the CHG90 more enjoyable to use overall. Took some adjustment time but I just feel more immersed in whatever I’m doing whether it be gaming or work.

You can get two 27 1440p monitors for less then this. Price is too high for what it is.

  • I got one, it’s good, I regret nothing!

Slightly Cheaper last time, with postage…

    I’m used to 1080p 27” monitors though

The problem with a higher res monitor would be the difficulty to drive it.,, my Vega 64 is smooth, but I’d hate it to have to drive something with quite a bit higher resolution, that could be problematic…

OK, thought I'd give a bit of feedback after using mine for a few months,

with Ultra super special xtra wide, (or whatever its called) I find i no longer have apps full screen, always window mode, and size to the size that feels comfortable. with some games when they are full screen, interestingly the sides are stretched, so you don't get 2x as much view as you would expect, and some images cut the top off to fit the ratio. but nothing that effects game play…(actually civ 6 has no such problems, so maybe its just some games) i still find it extremely immersive - much more so that a standard wide screen. Some games like the original borderlands, really don't like it and they do cut off part of the game. or you feel like your missing parts. you'd need to play these windowed with is a bit of a pain though. id say it could be a bit of a problem with some of the older games… I havent tried a massive amount of games as usually i get stuck on one for a month or two before moving on, i've been recently playing ESO, just cause 3, civ 6 and all seem to work well.

I think, because its not two monitors i don't favour one side either, IE at work, i more often use my right monitor for day to day, and left monitor for when i need two things up at a time, with the CHG90, i usually have things in the middle, then separate them if i have something like an instructional on the right and a unix window on the left. not to mention there is no bezel in the middle, so you cant really game on 2x 27s either.

it works really well in eso, where i have it windowed and something like a pricing engine in the right hand part of the screen.

it sometimes does feel a little short - maybe my 27" monitors where slightly higher… depending on what your doing, but very rarely do i have that feeling.

as i said above im used to 1080p monitors, so the size doesn't really worry me. I've never really been one for crystal clear sharp images though, as long as its not blurry i'm fine.

There feels to be a bit more freedom with it.

over all it works really well, i don't miss full screen for applications, and i'm happy with my purchase. I think i wanted over all size over pixel size.

ohh, and I've had no issues fitting it on my desk. i'll admit you wouldn't want it on a small desk, but my desk is not a huge desk by any means.

I think once you see how impressively large these are in person, it adds to the appeal of these monitors.

  • Would love to see people watching tennis on this…. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Husband bought one of these, had it less that 8 weeks and it stopped working. Waiting for the repairer to tell us what needs repairing.

interestingly the dell is on sale (20% off), 5120 x 1440 IPS too, but only 60 HZ and @2,200 its quite a bit more expensive though… so increased resolution, IPS panel at the cost of refresh rate… that said, there probably isn't a card that can drive this faster than 60hz anyways..

    • True, but $2799 less 20% is still $2239 which makes this look like a bargain. Interesting debate though as to whether one would go resolution over panel type/refresh rate. I'd imagine a 2080/2080Ti would be able to drive it but I have yet to see any reviews on it.

      • I'm just going off what my Vega 64 can drive real world, which is supposed to be similar to a 1080 (faster in some slower in others) and the 2080 isn't "much faster" so with the fairly sizeable increase in pixles, I cant imagine even those cards getting a much higher steady frame rate..
