  • Just placed my order, have been waiting for this media player. I'm just wondering, how long will i receive my order?

    • +1

Will ship your unit tomorrow, you should receive it on Thursday. However since courier companies will have so much to deliver that day (just coming back from Easter weekend) it is possible that it takes an extra day to get it delivered but I think in all likelihood you should receive it on Thursday.

  • How does this compare to the WDTV Live? I missed out on the OW special and just wondering if should go this route (however I do not have any iPhone/iPad/iPod products).

    • +4

I hope you get a reply from an "unbiased person" too. The WD is a great budget player however this device has extra features that an ever-increasing number of people consider very important such as:

      BD/Blu ray iso support.
HD audio bitstreaming support (TrueHD and DTS HD)
Internal 3.5" hard disk bay (many prefer it over a external device)
wireless dongle and HDMI cable included
RMVB format support (specially important for the Asian-Australian market)
Apps: such as built in movie juxebox
      More expensive remote control

And then for users with apple devices:

Ability to control player with iPhone
      Airplay
Dock (stream videos, music and recharge)

      • Unbiased response: The WD TV live is still cheaper and you just have to work out for yourself if these extra features are worth the extra money

  • How noisy is this thing ? The reason I ask is that you have a separate pack with the ICE passive cooler ? Any deals on that package ? (same price :) )

    • +1

The fan is not noisy, I personally have not fitted the player with the icecube. What the pack gives you is total assurance that the product will be completely silent for the entire life of the unit which is important for many as some fans have a tendency to get louder as time goes by.

I have dropped the price of the icecube pack to $25 for a limited time, can't drop it further due its cost price and specially the fact that we don't have much stock.

  • Cheers. Might be cheaper to replace the fan if it fails :) Order placed for the normal pack. Might get the ICECUBE later if I find the fan is too loud later.

    • +1

Great. If you end up wanting to get the ICECUBE send us an email and we will it arrange it for you.

  • Thanks for posting something new and different….looks like a great alternative to the AppleTV.

    • Hi OP, how is this compare to the Astone AP300?

      • Can't comment in every feature but there are differences in the frequency of updates, chipset used (the AP300 uses the 1073DD which is not capable of HD audio bitstreaming), user interface, support, features (many features mentioned above are not included in the astone), overall build quality of player…

Overall, the two players cater to different budgets and requirements.

      • I have a astone ap300 and a xtreamer pro and well the xtreamer is 100x better, but please be aware that if you buy this please look at there forum(http://forum.xtreamer.net/).

The Movie JukeBox is not done by xtreamer it is done by the community so don't exempt fast updates.

  • would this device support a usb bluetooth? the reason i ask is that i want to use a bluetooth keyboard to type while searching for videos on youtube….

    • Have not tested this nor read that it is supported so I don't think it is supported at this stage.

      • Your best bet it is to search there forum.

    • Just reading the iXtreamer user manual. On page 156 of the PDF it shows how you can use the inbuild iPhone keyboard to type onto Youtube, etc. Note this is NOT using the iPhione itself, but by browsing the iXtreamer's IP address and using the web interface. Therefore you could use a PC or anything else that allows typing into online HTML forms. That's not bluetooth… just some added info.

  • maybe fix the title so that the lower price is in bold?

  • Hi rep, how this unit compares to Dune HD smart series? it seems to have more feature for lest bucks? Also, installation of the 3.5" sata, is it plug and play as it is in Dune HD? or how hard it is? another thing is how hard it is to access the unit from networked computer (wireless)?

    • +1

The Dune series are a different kind of animal. They are as close as it gets to a "hifi grade" or high end media player. It is a media player that we actually distribute to a good number of hifi-stores, systems integrators. There are a number of reasons for that. The upside of the iXtreamer are software related features specially concerning apple device related features.

The Dunes are probably the most reliable and user friendly media players out there. They carry the most powerful chipset on the media player market, the sigma 8642chipset which has the ability to play extremely high rate bitrate movies and a superb network performance. This chipset also makes way to one of the most important features of the HDI DUNE: full menu Blu ray iso support, the xtreamer has blu ray iso support but with a simplified menu. The Dune also downmixes HD audios and has features such as IP Control (related to home automation support).

So there are differences but even if budget is not an issue the two players are fairly differentiated which can make it a tough call. We recommend the Dune series to customers that have a Blu ray iso or rip collection.

Installation of the 3.5" sata on the ixtreamer is fairly straight forward. The iXtreamer comes with two "rails", you will need to screw these rails to the HDD and then insert the HDD into the iXtreamer. A very straight forward process.

It is very easy to access the unit from a computer even wirelesslt, the player acts as a NAS, it has a SAMBA server (and on top of my head a UPNP and NFS server too)

  • Hi - I have a Astone AP300 and a eGreat M34. Music is served by a Dlink NAS via Gigabit network (wireless G is also available). Both player have been good for video, but one thing both these do REALLY badly is a Audio "jukebox". Music is an important part of what we want a media player to do…. probably more than a video player, with a music-obsessed kid in the family!

I don't want to make playlists PRIOR to listening to music (who knows in advance what they want to listene to, anyway?)… I just want to be able to review music files (from whatever source) and cue them up… in other words to make an "on the fly" playlist.

The Astone can sort-of do it - but you have to copy all the files onto the local drive - it cannot make a dynamic playlist from a remote source! I've resorted to copying the files to an iPhone and then using the AMP app to make dynmic playlists. Bloody clunky really :-(

QUESTION 1 - How does the Xtreamer handle this music playlist aspect?

QUESTION 2 - Will it allow a normal (off-the-shelf, copyrighted) DVD to be played from USB?

    • I will need to test and look more in depth at this.

From what I have tested at this point there is no "on the fly" playlist from network sources. There seems to be a non working option to add songs to the juxebox but this feature has not been implemented yet so I will need to test this more and let you know regarding Q1.

There is another "solution" which I have been using recently but it requires the player to be connected to the net, it is in some ways much much better, it is called grooveshark. It is a music searengine which allows you to do playlists from your findings. Basically your son can search any song (or even upload some) and add it to the playlist. Even the entire discrography of very very obscure groups are there…

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRjof9qgvDg

Regarding Q2, yep the iXtreamer plays copyrighted discs from USB DVD drives.

      • Thanks - I wonder if this "dynamic playlist" limitation is inherent in the Realtek chipset? I am surprised that others don't request it!

I am trying to to have a separate Audio and "other Media" devices in the house… On solution might be to move all the music off my NAS and onto the Media Player HDD, and then stream off THAT. Doesn't help if I want to have 2 media streamers, I guess

        • I would say it is an issue with media players in general not just realtek. The chipset makers come up with a standard SDK (software development kits which is what the firmware of the players are based on) which have "weak" music related features so then it comes down to the manufacturers of media players themselves to implement features like on the fly playlists from network sources but the issue is that manufacturers tend to have way more requests to fix things like bugs from the chipset maker's SDK and video related features etc so at the end of the day audio futures are down on the list of priorities…

You are not the only user and customer that has complained about this. I hope that as the media player market matures chipset makers, manufacturers put more attention to audio/music.

        • There is some hope that the new version 3 firmware will address this. The Xtreamer guys seem to be working hard…

          http://forum.xtreamer.net/topic/21867-firmware-version-3-for…

They say that the new version 3 will introduce :

          a) built in movie jukebox. We took the community engine and turned it to be part of the FW flow. We did so to retain compatibility and allow the community to continue its progress on a better performance engine.
          b) - a new slick music player that supports also playlists.
          c) the SDK introduce support for netflix and mediafly as well as few others. We are now doing the licensing.
          d) the new version 3 will allow you the benefits of new feature we call control pad. an elegant universal launch screen to your favorites and shortcuts. we will update you about it when time comes.
          e) version 3 will allow you to enjoy control of your machine with mouse and keyboard, even 2.4g wireless.
          f) version 3 will introduce cache and buffering control for internet streaming.
          g) We made opera web browser part of the machine, however we did a webkit based browser as well. We now test performance and will be able to conclude the best option that is providing best experience on RTL .
          h) We added support to flash. SWF files will be playable on the machine. Flash is also another big headache for us as it consumes alot of the system resources, and we are limited with what the RTL platform can or cannot do with it.

  • +1

Took the plunge mate - ordered! Along with my Astone, AppleTV2, WDTV Live and Boxee - the search continues for the ultimate player!! (though I love my Boxee, it's limited)

EDIT - Oh, and I hope the overnight delivery is valid, off work tomorrow and I always love a new gadget to play with! ;-)

    • Haha … like your comment … "the search for the ultimate player continues". Same here … :-)

    • Will ship the units today so you should get it tomorrow.

    • hey there, may i ask how the boxee box lets you down please ? What are its limitations ? I too have been through numerous devices ( Original Xbox with XBMC,Ziova,Dvico,Popcorn Hour,WD TV,etc not to mention an expensive "B" series Samsung top of the range plasma TV,and Boxee software on a computer. Still haven't arrived in a happy place yet ! Boxee software trial is about as close as i have got especially for the movie synopsis info pulled down from the internet without major effort to do so.
Am ready to try the Boxee Box but have been amazed just how little anyone seems to know about them ( especially the blokes trying to sell them.)thanks

  • @HDcity: can you have a check for me plz, how come my order status is still "processing" and the money hasn't been taken from my acc as well (even though i paid it through paypal) . my order no. is 100001588. Thanks
