No Confrontational Parking Fine

Asking for a friend. My friend stopped at a no stopping sign briefly to pick up someone. A week later, got a $260 fine in the mail for stopping at no stopping. The ranger did not fine my friend on the spot nor confront my friend to drive away. I guess the ranger just took a photo, enter the fine into their system and then walked off.

Is this the norm? it seems very easy, no confrontational money grabbing exercise. I think they should have at least walked up and see whats going on with us, check whether it was a mechanical breakdown and if not just shoo us off. I cant imagine rangers now taking a stroll and just start snapping pics of cars stopped at no stopping and fining them all. Sydney City Councils gona be mega rich then.

I know stopping at no stopping constitutes a fine. The question is more of how rangers fine people these days.

  • If a cop is pulling you over for whatever reason, can you stop in a no stopping / clearway / etc?

    • Make sure the location is safe.

Not a helpful comment, but I once stopped at a no stopping point to drop off heavy items to a work site and then parked legally nearby(but not near enough to carry the construction materials).

When I got back to my car at the end of the day, the police has put a caution on my window for the no-stopping violation.

I thought that was pretty extreme, as they definitely waited for me to leave before issuing the caution.

  • Your friend should consider themselves lucky. I did the same thing, but instead of getting 1 fine, I got 2 - the ranger went around in a quick circle and took another photo!

    • How could you possibly get two infringements for the single offence??

If I was the ranger and I saw this post, I would track you both down - wait for you to f*** up again and fine you both three times the norm.

Don't worry, we won't confront you if you admit that you are the 'friend'.

I know I will get a lot of shit for this, but fines do not add money to the budget at least not in NSW (I know the income and how much everything costs). They break even. However coming from a country that has rules but does not enforce them I can tell you we have parking on the sidewalk, double parking… etc. We can have a normal discussion about the size of the fine, but not about the fact that you should get one. And no… they should not have to tell you to move… just follow the rules.

Slightly off topic here but does No Stopping also apply to Taxi's? On King St in Sydney (near MLC) there's always a bunch of them that suddenly stop (despite it being a queue for cars to turn left onto Elizabeth St) in the no stopping zone whilst waiting for potential customers.

  • omg stfu and follow the rules like the rest of us

  • Obviously the Rangers should take you out for a drink or a meal and take the trouble to explain why stopping in a no stopping area isn't ideal. They should also give you their mobile number and offer to drive you around, like a free Uber. Would that be OK O.P.? Or do you want more?

  • They can fine you however they like. Its up to you then to prove you had a reasonable excuse not to be there. Which would be an unlikely. Parking inspectors love this one. The best ones are near schools.

  • 1-stopping and having a chat about the issue whilst the car is running and person is still behind the wheel is simply dangerous. Much of the time the parking inspectors get very little respect. They don't know the driver or what they are likely to do. What if the driver decides to speed off mid conversation because they can sense they're about to get a fine? They drive over a foot, or put the inspector at risk by clipping him with the car as they try to abscond.

2-Revenue raising is rubbish. Turnover of parks and road safety are paramount, these guys aren't on commissions, if they were- more people would want to do the job! Issuing a fine remotely tells someone clearly that they are wrong and does help them think twice before stopping in the same place a second time for fear of being caught. Having a direct issued ticket on the spot means next time they might still do it, they'll just make sure to check for the inspector first. It becomes about whether they think they'll get caught as opposed to whether it's the right thing to do!

It sucks but thats the deal! Cop the fine, don't do it again,

    • Who doesn't like revenue? Roads and parks doesn't come cheap. Better someone else pay for it than us.

    • They may not be on commission, but they are on quotas, so the end of the month or financial year there are more tickets pushed out. Its a fact.

      • The quotas would be based on expected number of offenders from previous statistics/records.

This sniper ranger is a lazy coward. I stopped to drop off my wife in the middle of Melbourne city at a taxi stop right next to two rangers chatting away. They didn't even bat an eyelid. Most rangers in Melbourne would shoo me away if I stopped when I am not supposed to.

Australia major cities is over crowded, there isn't enough parking space and vehicle chokes the city. Focus on infringement with vehicle without a driver priority.

A 20 seconds drop off should be made legal as long as it is safe and not obstructing traffic.

I saw a female ranger in her 50s today at the local shopping area issuing a fine to a 30 year old guy parked at a “taxi zone”, she copped so much abused that I nearly got off the car to help her. But then she might also fine me. So I moved on.

But the reality is, it is better for them to do their job without the abuse. People need to grow up and own up to their responsibilities. You break the laws, you cop the fines.

Tough luck, better follow the laws next time.

  • The No-stop sign is there for reason not for fun. It means "You don't stop." not "you can stop for a second". Full stop.

Surely this thread has run its course after four pages with the majority of comments in favour of not violating road rules.

  • I thought this was how it's done now, at school drop off's the parking inspector just stands there with his machine from across the road and send the ticket in the mail. That's how i received mine and other parents have as well.

  • I copped a fine in the mail after allegedly parking in a 'no stopping' zone. I didn't even receive a photo of my parking of the alleged offence.
I challenged the fine and provided evidence that I hadn't parked in the no stopping zone (Google Maps timeline extract showing that I was in the area where 2 hour parking was allowed). I was simply denied and told 'we don't have to take photos, we can just go on what the ranger says as they have a policy of not taking photos in a school zone.'
I went in again and challenged again, and eventually they gave in, I assume as they didn't have the required evidence to win in court which was the next step.

Long story short, it seems a bit opportunistic to just hand out fines without providing any evidence. If you have a policy of not taking photos in a school zone (which I understand), you need to have some sort of way to provide evidence! I'm sure some people would have just rolled over and paid the fine if I hadn't been so persistent
