Who Accepts The Companion Citibank Signature Rewards - The Diners Club

Hi all,

As you know, Citibank Signature Rewards (and Platinum) comes with the companion card, The Diners Club.

I am hoping this page can be a go to page as I am building a record of who accepts Diners Club and any known associated costs (surcharges) in using it.

The companion card, when used can be extremely useful as I have discovered recently when going to Japan.

Basically when this card is accepted, it is

  1. International Transaction Fee Free and the exchange rate with Citibank is more often BETTER than Transferwise AFTER fees for the equivalent forex;
  2. Providing the same insurance coverage as the host card (if Platinum, then it goes by Platinum's Cover otherwise, it should follow Signature's cover);
  3. An effective $1 for 2 points bypass for vendors that would otherwise only giving you either 1 point per $1 or 1.5 points per $1; and lastly,
  4. For now, an effective flybuys hoarder because up until 31 March 2019, every $1 Citibank Rewards point transfer will yield you 1.15 points and a $500 Coles Giftcard is currently requiring 104,000 points, now would be 15% lesser give and take.

So as far as I know based on research and some experience, this companion card is accepted in:

  1. Eastern Honda (VIC, Doncaster) at AMEX surcharge (approximately 2.65%)
  2. Uniqlo In-Store (Not online). No Surcharge. Uniqlo Malaysia does not work (Thanks to Dasher86)
  3. Coles In-Store (Online is unknown). No Surcharge
  4. Woolworths / Safeway In-Store (Online is unknown). No Surcharge
  5. Hotels.Com / Expedia (Online only). No Surcharge
  6. Kmart In-Store (Online is unknown). No Surcharge
  7. Target both In-store and Online. No Surcharge.
  8. Most EBGames In-Store (Online unknown). No Surcharge
  9. Cafe Moravia (VIC, Camberwell). Unknown if charging Surcharge or not
  10. Eastlink (VIC). No Surcharge.
  11. Citylink Transurban (VIC). Surcharge 1.9%. Avoid by having Eastlink accounts only as it is usable in Citylink tollways.
  12. All Coles Express Petrol Station. No Surcharge.
  13. All BP Petrol Station. No Surcharge
  14. Australian Open Retail. No Surcharge
  15. Myer. No Surcharge
  16. David Jones. No Surcharge

  21. Leo's Fine Foods. No Surcharge
  22. Tech2Go Tullamarine. No Surcharge.
  23. Most of Japanese establishments with the exception of Universal Studio Japan (Osaka) and Mos Burgers establishment. No Surcharge.
  24. JR Japan Railway Pass ONLY to purchase point to point transport tickets (eg: Shinkasen or Limited Express Azusa) but NOT to top up Pasmo/Suica. No Surcharge
  25. Fujikyu Highland Railway in Japan.
  26. Aliexpress (thanks to Dasher86)
  27. Exxon Mobil Petrol Station Sites or 7-11 as they are known (thanks to Patpoh)
  28. Joybuy (thanks to Povertytrap). Are they any good? Never shopped at them.
  29. Cotton On (thanks to Zx4u)
  30. Crown Gifts Online. No Surcharge HOWEVER, if you buy onsite or settle hotel stay, they do have surcharge. Not sure how much.
  31. Ezidebit. 4.13% Surcharge. Not worth it.
  32. Officeworks! Can't believe they accept Diners! No Surcharge (thanks to Dasher86)
  33. Bunnings, No Surcharge (thanks to PorkRoll)
  34. Skybus online, No Surcharge but question mark for on-premise (thanks to HerculePoirot)
  35. Contribution from MtFranklin. "Recently travelled to Hawaii and the card was accepted almost every where. I linked the card to Uber and Lyft, the big shopping mall shops, the small food stalls. The exchange rate was good too. So mainly this will be my travel card along with Bankwest zero platinum."
  36. Liquorland (Coles Liquor) (Thanks to CoolSteps)
  37. First Choice Liquor (Thanks to CoolSteps)
  38. City of Boorondara accepts Diners Club with 1.63% processing fee.
  39. JD.com

If the list can be added by Ozbs, it would be greatly appreciated as we all can maximize our points earnings and direct some business to these vendors if appropriate.

    • Not entirely accurate and incomplete as I have found on some merchants.

    • Appreciate the link, which I commented in that forum when the card was first released.

However, this forum is specifically on usability on the card and deliberately put at the front to be a listicle.

    • There is an issue with the Discover logo appearing on the card but unable to be used at all.

For example, Ebay does accept Discover but for some reason, it rejects the card even though it recognized it as Discover.

I might re-check with CItibank again but wonder who uses Discover network?

      • Update on this.

Ebay will investigate if it is something they need to fix.

In the meantime, I discovered that if you pay using SQUARE payment, the website says it accepts DISCOVER. I first saw this at JB Hifi Eastland where it said Square accepted Visa/Mastercard/AMEX/DISCOVER.

        https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5085-accepted-cards

This website however, is a USA website.

  • pretty helpful when buying air ticket in Europe

Recently travelled to Hawaii and the card was accepted almost every where. I linked the card to Uber and Lyft, the big shopping mall shops, the small food stalls. The exchange rate was good too. So mainly this will be my travel card along with Bankwest zero platinum.

  • Officeworks no surcharge.

  • another 2 to add to the list is liquorland and 1st choice and some air lines. btw if you use it to book airfares are you covered for travel insurance that you get with visa platinum or signature cards?

  • Not sure if I understand your point about the flybuys, but are you sure about the rate of transfer to flybuys? I know there's a 15% bonus being offered at the moment, but excluding that, the rate I see on Citibank's website is 1.33 citi points converts to 1 flybuy point.

    • On my information, I was led to believe the transfer rate is 1 to 1. Let me check further or if others can add to this.

Pretty silly to do it like if this is true, to be honest.

EDIT: Have a look at this. https://www.flybuys.com.au/collect/#/partners/citi

Towards the bottom, it says this

"Signature and Prestige cardholders: Currently 1 Citi reward Point equals 1 flybuys point. If you transfer 20,000 Citi reward Points you will receive 20,000 flybuys points and an additional 3,000 flybuys BONUS POINTS."

and unexpectedly, I found this comment:

"Linked Diners Club Cards are accepted at most flybuys retail partners". Hmmmm…..

  • Has anyone tried using Diners at Caltex?

  • Can no longer edit the above.

City of Boorondara accepts Diners Club with 1.63% processing fee.

  • JD.com

  • Woolworth Caltex accepted my Diners Club last weekend. Presumably Caltex would not be any different since it is just branding.

    • Normal Caltex are very much different, they surcharge Amex for example, whereas Caltex Woolies don't (in Vic anyway).

    • The surcharge for Caltex is quite high though.

  • Melbourne Airport accepted Diners at 2.26% surcharge. However, I am not sure if pre-paying on line.

  • Footlocker accepts Diners with no surcharge. If the terminal says Visa/Mastercard, ignore it. It still accepted Diners. Confirmed at Footlocker Chadstone.

So is Secure Parking but unknown surcharge

  • Woolies takes Diners online as well as in store. Caltex Woolies also accepts.

BWS accept, no fee (makes sense as Woolies accept it).

Pretty much every Hilton and IHG branded hotel takes them (Hilton, Conrad, Doubletree, Hampton, Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza) but this might be hotel specific. I've been successful at many across various countries.

Be aware that spend on the Citi Diners card doesn't count towards the monthly spend they need to trigger the bonus points, if you're aiming for that. It's not clear in the T&Cs, and they did give me them as my total spend was enough, but made it clear that Visa transactions were all that mattered.

    • +1

Who told you that? I never use the Visa card as the earn point is crap and only use the Diners card and still getting the bonus points. Don’t trust their useless staff if you got the information from them.

      • Citibank's CS. It certainly didn't give me the points automatically, but their CS did manually credit them. I enquired after two months, I was 20k points down. Since ensuring it's all on Visa, they're posting automatically now.

    • Nah. I get bonus point every single dollar. It is the VISA part that I am noticing lack of points being awarded. I am currently disputing that.

For example if ur VISA spend is $5000 then u should at least see 5000 points but mine is consistently lower. The Diners part is correct

      • I mean the signup bonus, 10k points per month, not the 2/$1 that the DC pays, they post fine. DC is excellent for hotels overseas, 2 points/$1 and no forex fees, it's my #1 for hotel spend now.

  • Does anyone know how the diner points compares with the new AMEX platinum earn rate?

  • Diners I think works out at 0.8 velocity points per $,not sure Amex platinum rate.

    • 2.25 pts / $1 spend and conversion rate is 2:1 to most airlines, so 1.125 pts / $1

  • If I recall correctly, Diners and Amex payment gateway is ran by the same company in New Zealand.
If merchant signup to become an Amex Merchant, they automatically accept AMEX, DINERS and JCB

    • By that theory, Square Australia would accept Diners but alas, it doesn't even though they accept AMEX.

  • Peter Alexander accepts Diners happily!

Hey You Apps apparently can start using Diners Club as per this link below

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/459152

  • Can't get my CitiBank Diners card to work with Aliexpress. Keeps saying invalid card.

    • I just looked at their payment method and couldn't find Diners as one of the accepted method of payment.

Probably may have been taken out recently or never worked before.

      • Diners worked for me with Ali Express yesterday.

  • Got a few today.

Virgin Airlines - Onsite. Haven't tried online.
Melbourne Airport Parking - Online only if you want fee free.
    13Cabs

  • Harvey Norman is accepted with no surcharge also

  • Also JB Hi-Fi with a surcharge (if you tell them you're using Diner's or they spot your card!)

    • This is new….

I wonder how much is the surcharge.

In the meantime, CPA Australia accepts Diners Club too!

    • If they don't pick the card is there no fee or does the machine software pick it up?

      • +1

I always assumed the machine would automatically add the surcharge but the last 3 times I've been to JB I haven't mentioned I'm using Diners and I don't get any additional surcharge appear on my receipt

  • Ticketmaster - no surcharge
Venues under ALH Group - no surcharge

    • Any notable places for venues under ALH group?

      Never heard of them.

      • Woolworths own them. Check the ALH website and you will see all their hotels.

  • Good work OP.
It would be a good idea to separate the overseas retailers into a separate list.

Furthermore, an important point to remember it that Citi reward points can not be earned on government spends e.g. Australia Post.

  • I recently had my diners club declined twice in store at Coles. Did anyone else experience this?

    • Nope.
Usually have to insert, then swipe.

      • Thanks. I've also got used to insert then swiping. I asked Citibank whether there was a way to deactivate the (RFID)? chip so I can't just do swipe first time around. Unfortunately they said no.

    • +1

Nope - used it an hour ago.
      My card is swipe only

      • +1

Thanks. I usually get the message "card not accepted", but this time it said "declined-refer to issuer". Luckily the companion Citibank visa worked as usual.

    Recent discovery!

    13Cabs - Technically 5% surcharge but so is Visa/Mastercard/AMEX
    Hoyts Cinema - No Surcharge
Sydney Opera Bar - No Surcharge
Optus - No Surcharge BUT I could only use Diners if using Laptop. Mobile no luck

    • They're charging 5% surcharge for Visa too?!
Jeez, remind me never to take a taxi through them

      • Can someone who uses Ola or Uber confirm if Diners can be used?

  • Cheap tickets.com allows payment with Diners.

  • I was able to use this card virtually everywhere in the Philippines that accepted credit cards. Spent $1k on it so great to get free forex and points. Thrilled about this.

  • Singapore Airline accept DC as payment method online

    PayPal!
Resurrecting this old thread to say that you can now use your connected Diner’s card to pay on PayPal.
It’s only taken about 3 years

This is significant in other ways as well on PayPal.
There are no international transaction fees if you use your Diner’s Card (unlike the Citibank Premier Visa).

All we need now is for Amazon to accept Diner’s Card to avoid the 0.5% fee for Visa that starts 1st Nov 2021

  • Some have said the rate is not that good.

  • Any of you got your renewed Diners Club Card withy our reissued Citibank Premier cards (those with original Signature lifetime fee-free holders)?

    • Yes, The Premier card is now Mastercard. The Diner's Card issued out, the same as before.

      • Was your Diners card issue along with your Premier Mastercard or did they come in separate letters?

        • Came together, same envelope

          • @cashless: Cool, that's the same as my parents. However, I only received my Mastercard and not the Diners. For some reason their system didn't dispatch one even though it was requested near expiry. Had to call them up just now to manually request it and get it dispatched.

  • BP Stations don't accept Diners card. At least the one i tried.
    Bunnings too has failed.

    • I am pretty sure BP still accept it. I know that 7-11 do as I used it last week.
Bunnings certainly do, as do Colesworths.
Remember, you may need to swipe the card rather than tap.

  • 16th October 23. The day that NAB killed the Citi Diner’s Card.
    RIP

Let's hope we get to keep the free for life card

    • I bought a ticket to Disneyland as my last transaction. Good while it lasted.

Will have to grab a Coles Rewards card or BankWest Qantas card to replace it (have already churned the Commbank Ultimate Rewards card).

  • October 16th. Card still working for me.
