  • I love how some companies are advertising 2020 cruises already (with the exception of big 'event' days). How does the facilities are Carnival compare to say, P&O?

    • I personally liked Carnival as it seemed to have more smaller events/games/trivia etc. P&O isn't bad though (I have 2 cruise experience)

      • The last Carnival Cruise I went on the Trivia was an absolute joke and was terrible, not worth doing and all the events and games were not much better really left a bad taste in my mouth thinking I will do P&O next time just because of it.

    • It is Royal Caribbean > Carnival > P&O. P&O have the oldest ships and the least experienced staff. Having spoken to the staff on the ships, there is a requirements to have worked at least 2 years on P&O before they can go onto Carnival and at least 5 years before RC.

    • Sorry everyone! Too much work and not enough rest does that to my brain!

You had me at 24hr pizza

    • The quattro fromaggio with pepperoni is amazing

      • "formaggio"

        • Thanks I guess haha

            @diddy50: It's my pleasure.

It'll help if you're ever in Italy to order 4 cheeses.

Damn it, now I feel like that pizza you mentioned!!!!

P & O is a 3 star cruise. Carnival is 3.5 star and Royal caribbean is 4 star.

    • Agree, where do you place Celebrity? 4?

      • On this scale celebrity is closer to 5. Celebrity is the luxury arm of RCCL just as Cunard is the luxury arm of Carnival.

        • Not really. Azamara, and even moreso Silversea are both the more upscale and luxury brands within Royal Caribbean.

          • @odysseus: Yes and they would be 6+ however on this scale where RCCL is a 4 you can't have celebrity on the same level.

            • @Fiximol: No, there's no 6+ rating for cruise ships.

Celebrity is generally classified as "premium." Silversea is generally classed as luxury.

              • @odysseus: I must disagree, and I am not alone with this classification

There is no reason to limit stars to 5 arbitrarily, same for hotels which now go up to 7 stars.

                • @Fiximol: Point accepted, although I don't agree with the underlying merits of increasing star ratings as though the quality is higher.

The actual quality of Celebrity's product has gone down over the past decade, so it's not as though there's a need to increase ratings above a previous level, as they've moved more mainstream and other luxury providers took their place.

  • Is this good for a young couple in their 30s? both of us have never been on a cruise?
    If not any better suggestions?

Carnival is a party cruise line. If you are into that type of thing then it is good. It depends entirely on the type of holiday you want.

I've been on one cruise, with Carnival, and enjoyed it. Staff were super friendly - which I've been told is because they're strictly rated on customer service and negative feedback will cost their job. The events are mostly family orientated (with a couple of adults only nights) and are fun when you're stuck on a boat. 24 hours pizza and ice-cream is terrific, meal times are hectic but are mostly buffet which is included in the ticket price.
So you don't have to worry about food, just relax and have fun.
Sea sickness is a pain though, so prepare yourself in the days before getting on board.

      • what do you mean by meal times are hectic?
How do you prepare for sea sickness?

        • +1

I wouldn't say hectic as the food is there for a few hours being refreshes constantly.

So You can either eat at the buffet where everyone goes at once. Or the extra food areas that open for lunch/dinner, such as Mexican, BBQ, burgers etc are busy at meal times.

There is also the regular restaurant which is part of the price, has session times. Breakfast and dinners. I think lunch as well.

They serve the same food, in an ala cart restaurant setting off the menu and extra options, table service for drinks etc.

the buffet is just that. Get a plate go to the various stations (food is always different on every day) and get your food with the hoard and then try to find a table.

We loved all the various salads.

Fancy dinner is extra and has fancier food. Not worth it unless you want a steak etc.

Also fancy seafood is extra from within the buffet area. But you don't need that.

          None of us got seasick.

          • @diddy50: How much additional money should I budget for other expenses based on expereince?(on cruise and off cruise)

            • +1

@bashar20: We got $900 on board credit, plus we spent about $3k on alcohol and extras. We drink a lot. Then a little more on shore spending of our own, plus cheap alcohol to take home. Etc.

All up we spent $5k for everything extra, minus the credit.

              • @diddy50: Cheap alcohol? I thought alcohol was expensive on cruises.

                • @bashar20: Duty free alcohol. $50 for two litres of belvedere Vodka. You can't drink that on board.

The alcohol is pretty standard in prices at the bars. You just drink a lot. There is always a waiter walking around the pool lounge areas. It's fantastic. But gets expensive. I'd do it again.

Just looking for the next cruise. We did these islands last August. Noumea was ok. Some islands where meh. But snorkling at tunek(?) bay on Mare - AMAZING!
                  Lifou was ok.
                  Mystery Island was pretty good.

                  • @diddy50: That’s impressive.
I wish this cruise was on this year!!!

                    • @bashar20: Similar one in August, twice

                      • @diddy50: You have been very helpful. Wouldn’t it be too cold in August for a cruise?

                        • @bashar20: Also Aug cruise to pacific Islands is warmer weather.

diddy50 has covered most questions. In relation to sea sickness, I'm pretty fine on large boats - even though it definitely still sways.
Since it's your first cruise, I recommend being prepared regardless - by buying quality travel tablets. I don't know what to recommend since I made the mistake of getting useless herbal motion sickness tablets which I definitely recommend you avoid.
If you are susceptible to motion sickness, take the tables a few days leading up to the cruise. I've been told this is an effective way to prepare.
Alternatively, you could ignore all this advice and just hop on the cruise. If it turns out that you're suffering badly from sea sickness, there is a pharmacy on board which will sell you tablets. If those fail, they can inject something into your bottom to sort it out.
Another passenger on the cruise I was on suffered for the first 36 hours or so and said the injection made her feel like walking on land.

Carnival is considered a 'younger' more casual cruise, at least that's seasoned cruisers tell me. I've been on a fair few different cruises inc Carnival and the majority of people were over 50 and I find the higher the price the higher the age of cruiser. That said there's plenty of things to do on board no matter what your age is. If it is your frist cruise I suggest 7 days (or less than 14 day cruise anyway in case you don't like it) choose based on ports of call, we didn't do the cruise organised shore excursions and organised our own (cheaper and better itinerary) we loved pigging out on all the food onboard.

  • MARCH 2020 !!!
