Large TV (65") Home Delivery Checklist

Recently I ordered a new Samsung Q9FN 65" from JB-Hifi.
Today is the delivery day. I only paid for the delivery, not for the unpacking or installation.
In case the TV can be damaged during the transport, what would you suggest me to check before the delivery guys leave my house?
Since this is considered a large TV, it may not be very easy and quick to unpack it and run a couple of tests. And I know the guys will rush me to sign the papers that delivery is completed.

What would be you check-list having a TV delivered to home?

Thanks.

  • Honestly, probably best you can really do is check the box for any bumps, scrapes or severe damage. Also make sure to check that there isn't any water or dry parts on the box. I'm not sure what else you can really check.

I feel the more useful part might be filming the unboxing? I've never done it myself but I've heard its helped people prove the item came broken. Assuming it came from the back of the warehouse it could of been damaged at many parts of the delivery process (like at the manufacturer or before it even got to JB HiFi) so I feel they shouldn't be too bad.

Check the box and packaging for any obvious damage/holes/dents. Take the TV out and look for physical damage. If nothing got through the cardboard box and the foam packaging, unlikely you'll find anything else without turning it on.

If there are any faults after turning it on and setting it up, just take it back to JB Hifi. They're not going to push back just because you didn't raise those issues when the TV was dropped off.

Thanks very much for the answers.
Also found this on Jb-Hifi's website.

According to 14. They strongly advise unpacking before signing the papers. Otherwise, the claim might be difficult.
Looks like the I'll have to keep the delivery guys little bit long ;)

The delivery guys probably won't be happy - maybe have these terms on hand to show them? They may even offer to help or take away the rubbish for you?

At least if the OP asks them to stay, as per the recommendations, and they refuse, he has tried to do what is required of him.

If there is a problem after they leave and after unwrapping, a refusal to fix would be VERY VERY difficult. Don't be overt about it, but just have your phone on audio recording as you ask them to stay for a few minutes as you unwrap. Maybe offer them a drink?

    • Yeah - it's just obvious physical damage that you need to watch for when taking delivery. Any other faults of the TV JB won't quibble about dealing with, just that the usual warranties and guarantees don't cover physical damage by the customer so if there is any, you need to show you didn't cause it.

I wouldn't overthink it too much - ask the delivery guys to stay a bit while you unpack it, most if not all would be okay with doing it, especially if you offer them cold water or something like that.

      • most if not all would be okay with doing it

Is this a joke or are you that out of touch?

        • OP doesn't need to set up the TV. Just open the box and take the TV out. 2-3mins tops.

Plus - if OP needs to sign for it, which they will for a large flatscreen TV, they can just not sign until they've done this.

When i bought my TV from ebay, I checked box etc and delivery guy left. Later found that TV screen had multiple cracks, so sent them pics etc , spoke with them and they arranged for new TV + took away broken one.

  • Tbh, this TV is not cheap as it is the flagship model for Samsung.

To safeguard yourself with any repercussions of denial of damaged goods, I would pay the extra for installation.

Some of these TV's have got a very thin wafer panel and un-boxing can also break panels which can void warranty.

At least if an installer breaks the panel, they wear it.

    It's just a thought :P

    Cheers

    • It's really not difficult, I've done it on my own. With one other person it's a doddle.

Make sure your fridge isn't in the way.

  • I bought the Q7 a few months ago and it was packaged very well. In order for the screen to be damaged, there'd need to be "deep" cut through the larger side of the box or if it had been dropped on the corners- both of which would be quite obvious when you look at the box.

I would expect that the Q9 is packaged the same way.

Although no damage on the box doesn't guarantee that the TV will actually turn on (but worst case, there's warranty to back you if the shop won't take it back).
