  • Probably the best card on the current market on frames per dollar metric.

    • +20

Nah best card per dollar is no card. Use IGP. 10fps/$0 > 144fps/$189

nah m8 you get infinite performance with igp

  • EDIT: click the link! Minor upgrade to my GTX970…

The "Raise the Game Fully Loaded" AMD promo entitles you to two out of three free games with an RX 570 purchase (The
Division 2, Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5). Here are the details: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/416951

  • Upgrade worth from a 780ti 3gb to 8gb model for 1440p gaming?

    • Did some googling, never mind!

      • what did you find?

        • About on par with each other in terms of specifications - way more RAM and much better power usage apparently though

          • @lachhelix: Did you look at benchmarks?

            • +1

@mavis30551: Yeah, they're about on par too (4GB anyway) benchmarked. I have no clue exactly what the values refer to (Max min frame rates maybe?)

              780ti 56/79 vs RX 4GB 50/68

          • @lachhelix: Reckon those optiplex 9010's would take it, assuming there was a pci- x16 extension cable, which I didn't even know existed till recently.

    • +1

RX 580 is generally the minimum you need for 1440p, but you'd need to turn down from Ultra settings in some of the latest AAA titles to maintain 60 FPS.

If you want consistent 60 FPS @ max settings then a GTX 1070 or better is required.

      • Ahhh thanks
Not too up with AMD GPU.
I don't play the latest - but i can say the 780ti averages 30 fps @ 1440p in Max settings (except for the hair tessalation/hairfx) in Rise of the Tomb Raider

        • +3

Yeah AMD is best 'bang for buck' when you game at the 'bang for buck' resolution of 1080p. But I was perhaps even being a bit generous with RX 580 performance at 1440p.

That said, if you compromise on your settings and don't need to run 16xaa, ultra tesselation and everything then 1440p on RX 580 is doable at med/high settings. But you're already doing that when it's new - imagine how you'll feel in 12-18 months time and decide whether it's worth dropping more now for longevity.

    • +1

      Honestly, no.
For 1440p I'd recommend a 1070/Vega 56 at MINIMUM. Look on ozbargain for any deals on the new RTX2060/2070 if you don't want to buy such an old card. You should actually look at used 1070s. That's what I did when I needed an upgrade from my RX480 8GB.

  • Guys is the 8gb version worth the extra 30 bucks?

    • +1

I would say yes but it depends entirely on the game. 90% of games 4GB is perfectly fine, the other 10% just drop the textures to medium/high. 8GB probably a bit more "future proof" when games require more VRAM as 4GB is pretty much the minimum nowadays (1060 3GB struggles in a few games where the 570/580 4GB is fine).

    • +1

I personally do not think so, it isn't the fastest of cards so you'll always have to turn down settings which uses less RAM, you'll likely not ever go over 4GB of RAM if you want to maintelain reasonable fps.

I have a Vega 56 8GB, in Assassins Creed Odyessey trying to maintain 50+ fps leads me to use high settings and low AA which uses less than 3GB of RAM. You'd probably be getting 30 to 40fps in that game with the same settings so you won't be going over 3GB either.

      • Thanks for the replies guys, anybody else?

        • Check out benchmarks in games.

        • I mean I would say it is worth it to save you headache down the line but if you really like saving the 4gb should be fine for now but you will need to upgrade after 3 or 4 years especially if you decide to go any higher than 1080p at all.

        • What kind of monitor do you have? 1080p? 2K? 4K?
If you only have a 1080p monitor, then there is no point getting 8GB. For games that will need 8GB VRAM, they will most likely not run that well on RX 570 anyway.

          • @netsurfer: Rise of the Tomb Raider struggles at 1080p with ultra settings due to the textures. 570 easily achieves 80fps in that game at ultra/1080p but you have to drop the textures to medium/high or the game freezes for a second or two occasionally.

            • @Yuri Lowell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yEZGHrIbd8
Rise of the Tomb Raider with a 570 benchmarks at an average of 66fps, at 1080p on Very High settings. It does get close to 4GB RAM usage, by hovering around 3.6GB most of the time, but it is not a 80fps game on Ultra settings.

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHac6zLit1g
A benchmark between the two cards. It seems in some games it makes no difference at all, and in some games it makes a difference. However, in all games it makes a difference, the fps are already above 60fps, so the purchaser needs to make sure their monitor is capable of a refresh rate of 75hz or higher for it to be a benefit.

              • @FabMan: I find hitting the VRAM limit won't negatively affect the average FPS. It makes the game stutter occasionally which makes the game entirely unplayable, at least that's what I found in Rise of the Tomb Raider but that's only with the highest texture settings. 4GB is cutting it close in my opinion, if you plan to use this card for a few years. As for it not reaching 80fps on average, that benchmark only runs the opening sequence which is one of the most demanding sections in the entire game, along with the village. In regular gameplay it does average 80fps. That benchmark would be considered worst case scenario.

    • Not really. I'd choose to use the $30 elsewhere if I'm putting together a budget build

    • Texture packs are your thing? If so the extra 30 bucks is worth it.

    • +2

Probably not. The GPU is likely to run out of gas before it ran out of VRAM.
As others have said though, there are cases where the 8GB could be useful. Graphical mods for older titles, texture packs, stuff like that, but they're pretty unique scenarios.

My lounge room PC has a 570/4gb at 1080p and my main rig has a 980ti/6gb at 1440p and have never found myself running low on VRAM on either machine. But then again, I'm not a Ubisoft/EA/AAA kinda guy.

    • If you play open world games or only run 8gb of ram, yes.

  • I'm surprised the 8gb hasn't gone down in price because i got it for the same price about 3-4 months ago

  • +1

Would this be better than a 480 4gb? Or best to wait for Navi?

    • They're pretty much the same but you can crossfire it with your 480 if your motherboard/psu supports that. Use the 570 as your main card and enable CF for games that support it.

    • Crossfire and SLi are dead, don't bother.

  • How much is delivery to Melbourne metro?

    • You can get a delivery price when you add the graphics card to your cart. You don't need to login.

      • I tried, said I needed to log in. Let me try again.

      • No bueno 😢

        • I was checking on PC, not mobile. If you want reply with a postcode and I'll check.

  • Dug up my old account to get shipping quotes for anyone interested.

    Shipping prices to Melbourne.

  • I mined with these Gigabyte cards, purchased about 10 of them. I've had fan issues with 5 of them and had to get them RMA'd as they're terrible quality. The fan bearings seized over a 6 to 8 month period. One of them even started wobbling and started scraping against the fan shroud creating a horrible sound.

Would stick away from these cheaply equipped fans.

  • Thanks. Hopefully this should be plug and play with the mac pro

    • +1

Yep they should be fine. The 4GB variant in particular is listed in Sonnet Tech's eGPU compatibility chart for macOS, so it should work out-of-the-box. Same goes for Hackintosh builds. 8GB variant is likely to be fine too.

Just be aware that you won't get boot screens with this card. It's not really a big deal, but you may want to hold onto your old GPU (GT120 or ATI 5770?) just in case. If you use Boot Camp, you can select which disk to boot from inside System Preferences > Startup Disk anyway :)

      • Cheers for the info.
I wasn't too sure about the boot screen for this particular unit; is there a way I can flash it to enable boot screen? I don't use bootcamp. It's just nice to have the start up screen for other purposes and I'm not planning to keep old video card cos Mojave.

        • +1

No way to enable boot screens as far as I'm aware.

If you hang onto your old video card and just keep it stored (for diagnostic purposes, recovery etc.) then you can still use it in Mojave when you need to, but it'll lack any sort of acceleration and everything will feel slow.

  • Is the 4gb version good enough for Resident Evil 2 in 1080P?

  • Guys sorry can being stupid - I just received my card today. How and where can I get the redeem code for the 2 free games?

    Thanks in advance.
