Kogan Massive Price Error

I’m calling it right now. Every single one of these Kogan deal will be cancelled and refunded. It looks like they uploaded their USD price list as AUD prices on their website. They are a public company but there’s no way they have enough money in the bank to give everyone a 30% discount on the entire site like amazon does. Best bet would be to run to Officeworks right now for a price beat.
Still hoping my $839 mate20pro comes through but no way it will happen.

damn, had a pixel 3 128gb in cart for 810, and then went to put my paypal info in and it wouldn't load. now it's 1300
also did not like my chance of actually receiving but you can dream.

      • +3

        You have already posted here

No point having comments all over the shop by rudely hijacking a comment.

        • +25

Sorry it's a comment error. Despite my best efforts, with the thousands of comments on ozbargain, I may accidentally make comment errors.

          Here is a $10 voucher.

          Expires in 5 eye-blinks.

            @[Deactivated]: Lol, upvote.

That aside, I'm pretty sure Kogan has been around enough to know that they want to avoid situations like this, because we've all shown how much of a headache we can make for retailers with careless price errors.

I could be wrong, but this is one of those times where I'm doubting that it was intentional. It really doesn't seem worth the time, effort, and backlash.

Plenty of other ways to get new users or people on their mailing list that would be less of a headache and better for customer relations.

But I definitely agree with what you said about this:

Finally they should put a big message on home page apologising for the error and warn customers against any more future possible errors.

I would think those that purchased the mobile vouchers were successful as emails were sent including the voucher number so low chance of cancelling. Others buying physical items, yeah no chance unfortunately.

  • +3

And we can be really jealous if they do get honoured ;)

  • +5

Hahaha… all the deals listed have now all been marked as “Expired” :D

Someone dun goofed at Kogan this morning.

Edit: Just tried to go to Kogan’s website and it is either down, or being borked that hard it’s just not responding… lol

  • I don't believe the mobile plans are a price error. It is advertised on their front page that their prepaid mobile is up to 40% off and the offer expires 31/31/2019.

  • +1

Damn…just bought a whole new PC build 🤣 fuark.

    • Tell us your specs and prices and part listing if you can :)

We would love to pick your buying decisions apart gladly for you haha lol

      • I'll play along. Was a very basic one for my Pop; 2200G ($102), Asus B450M-A ($85), 2x4GB 2667 HyperX Fury Ram ($68), Corsair RMX 550w ($88; for my PC; use my older psu in this build). Then was gonna use Thermaltake H18 as a case for $49 from msy/umart/eBay.

Instead sticking with the Techfast build i ordered for $499 (less however much i sell the RX 570 for).

        • So what is your expected / estimated total including case and everything?

          • @AlienC: Well it doesn't matter, since it was all a price error. Was looking at around $400

            • +1

@beaver2233: Hmm yeah well I guess it wasn't really needed to be anything powerful because honestly with those prices I would have just got the cheapest prebuilt gtx 1060 or RX 570/580 machine and be done with it.

Doesn't really seem like crazy savings. A few hundred dollars and it turns from a web browsing youtube machine to honestly a beast gaming machine.

But yeah I am guessing your pops is a much older gentle men above maybe even 65 years old and has no use for anything besides web browsing, news, sbs on demand, youtube and netflix haha lol unless you wanna open up his life to the wonderful world of pc gaming lol.

              ;) do it

for just $100 more he can pretty much have the time of his life and experience the f u t u r e

              • @AlienC: He's like 86 I think haha. His current PC is giving him problems. Only uses it for Free-cell and manually entering his stock prices for his portfolio every week or 2 (doesn't have internet).

                • +1

@beaver2233: Lol wow he plays the stock market at 86..Nice i guess it used to be the big thing back in his time haha lol.

  • I actually want to hear if any fast footed ozbargainers managed to get down to Officeworks and price beat stuff.

I was tempted but as it was a 15 minute drive didn’t go. Probably would have been around 5 mins short of time by the time they checked the website and got the stock anyway.

    • +6

Why not call the 1300 number? Much quicker than going to the store.

      • +14

Call Officeworks to do a pricematch.

    • +7

Called them while the deals were still active, apparently they wont price match Kogan anymore. Tried 2 different operators and both wouldn't even entertain the idea

      • Most retailers seem to only price match the other big box stores these days. I tried to get a price match at jbhifi on something before Xmas and was told they basically only price match Harvey not an, good guys, officeworks now

      • +1

You should lodge a complaint with the ACCC then. They advertise that they match prices.

        • +1

Bet you some where it says at their discretion though.

Unrelated though… Just bought an s9 plus for $806 from OW so they are still honouring it for that at least.

          • +1

@Scantu: If the condition is sufficiently small and hidden compared to the advertised statement and materially changes what is advertised, that's still considered misleading.

          • @Scantu: Which store did you price match against?

        • Look at their T&C's most likely they have a condition, they dont price match pricing errors

  • Right now I am banning any new deal from Kogan.com with reason "Site Wide Price Error". Please update us if their site gets back to normal.

For deals that have already been posted, I have been removing some of the recent ones as "Expired on posting". However in some of the older deals some have claimed to have scored the deal at the said price. If Kogan does honour the transaction — then these will be valid deals and the post will stay. Otherwise they might either get unpublished or moved to the forum with Price Error.

How about Kogan on Amazon AU? There are several on there that seem to be mispriced.

      • So far no cancellation of an order I made using Amazon

I dont hold out too much hope but lets see

  • +5

Do let us know if any of the prices do get honoured

    • So far just the mobile vouchers it seems

      • Tempted to now recharge but I still have 2.75 months left on my current voucher.

        Decisions decisions.

  • -2

Mavic 2 Pro was listed at $1499! Had it in my cart but hesitated and now's it back to $2499. FML!

  • Interestingly, on the invoice for my order, all items state "40% off on our trending deals". Still, am expecting a cancellation sometime soon…

    • What did you get?

      • Just a few pc components.

    • +2

I'm getting Kogan ads on OzBargain website still showing discounted prices but when you click through it shows full price.

      • +2

It's been great advertising for Kogan…

        • +1

Good for click throughs and traffic, not so good for retention and sales…

          • +1

@pegaxs: And not so good for company image soon I suspect… :)

            • +5

@Click_It: They never had a good image from the beginning.

            • @Click_It: Who cares?

              Mistakes happen

              • -2

@[Deactivated]: I don't care, impulse buy for a phone I don't really want anyway. If I get a $25 voucher and a refund I'll be happy. Otherwise I sell the phone and watch for a profit and I'll be happy. WIN/WIN for me.

Mistakes do happen but 40% off the entire website isn't a mistake its a F*up.

  • +2

yep. my order status has been updated to "requested refund"

    • Did they send out any communications explaining why? So it seems like it was just the mobile deals that went through?

      • No email as of yet.

  • Checked my order this morning for the Mate 20 Pro and can confirm they’re not honouring it. Status displays “Refund Requested”.

  • oh well at least they lost sales for the goods they then listed as sold out

  • Yep my order isn't being honored.
Can't say I'm surprised, but it was worth a shot.

  • Same same

    • +9

No. Stop buying from Kogan expecting good service and quality products for cheap. They may change their tune when it hits them financially.

    • +1

      nothing you can do mate.

    • +2

      Did you lose any money?

    • +14

Can we sue them for false advertising?

Do you listen to yourself? Suing for a price error?

      • -5

So if I am starting a new phone store, and would like to gain popularity, I can post massive discounts on ozbargain and claiming it was just a mistake?

        Yes I listened to myself.

With Kogan dropping shipster Kogan are pretty much useless now

  • Party is over

  • +1

Just log a complaint to ACCC, pricing error or no pricing error, I received the invoice on the note 9 and today Kogan sent targeted emails for accessories at 831am this morning, I thought wow the order is real and ordered a case for the note 9, at 1114am I received notice it was a pricing error.

I cancelled the order on the case, if it too good to be true it’s a Kogan. :)

    • Invoice? or order confirmation?

  • got my order cancelled and received an email with a measly $10 voucher…

But in all honesty, what's the legality of this?

My area of expertise is not Australian Consumer Law, but my understanding is that if I go through with a purchase online, and my card is charged by the merchant, we've actually entered into a contract, regardless of website fine-print conditions.

    Any experts care to clarify?

    • +3

You got a full refund so there is no breach in consumer Law..

    • +8

If it's a price error (which it was) then under consumer law they must give you a refund (which they have) and thus they've not violated consumer law. If they had intentionally deceived you into buying via bait and switch or other tactics (which they haven't) then it would be a different story.

Those who say to lodge a complaint with the ACCC are wasting their time. If the ACCC even bother to investigate and that's assuming they get enough complaints because they don't with small numbers, Kogan will say price error and that's the end of it.

      • so the online ads from Kogan which clearly advertised the lower price (which is now being claimed as a pricing error) is not deceptive practice on their part? I took a screenshot of the ads just incase…

        • +4

That's actually a difficult area if they're using Google AdWords Responsive Ads as they would be pulling the prices from the product page automatically. You can argue that they were being deceptive with those ads while Kogan can argue Google AdWords was pulling the incorrect price.

Either way Kogan have given people timely refunds and a voucher for their inconvenience. In my opinion it's not worth pursuing given how they've responded and the fact that you're going to need a very large number of people complaining for the ACCC to investigate.

  • holy smoke i want a free voucher

  • Could I use anyone's voucher they aren't going to use? Makes a small dent towards the shipping costs since they aren't part of shipster anymore =[

EDIT: NVM, got one from a kind ozbargainer

  • -8

If you already paid and Kogan processed the order they need to send you the item. It's illegal to incorrectly price the item if both prices are displayed which is what happened. ACCC or Fair Trading.

  • did anyone else get charged $15 (post refund) for a sim that was supposed to be free?

    • Yup, so did I. I have also received email saying the sim card is on its way.

      • yeah that ain't cool, on top of that I paid with a USD visa and if they want to refund a different amount instead of cancelling the authorization I will be charged 2 sets of international fees so like $50

    • -1

Lol. Y'all try to take advantage of the system and cry when you have to pay retail. Oxymoron.

      • +4

So according to you it's totally legal to do a partial refund and send an item we did not want/pay for?
