Pioneer VSX-S520 Slimline Network AV Receiver - $471.00 @ JB Hi-Fi

170

The lowest price I've seen these. A great Slimline Receiver with everything most normal people would ever need these days (4K, 3D, Wifi, BT, 5.1, ARC, Hi-Res Audio, Streaming etc.) and even includes a Phono input for a Turntable! Bought a couple of the euro model (the S520D with DAB+ tuner but identical in every other way) approx. 18 months ago from Germany, one for myself and the other for a neighbour and although I recently sold mine 'as new' & unused due to changed plans after a renovation my neighbour has been extremely happy with his in his mid-sized HT setup. Digital Amplification via B&O ICE so good power & clarity without all the heat issues of regular Receivers/Amps but of course they still need to breathe a bit so they still need a bit of airflow. Compact enough to fit into most TV/Entertainment cabinets.

Props to PTG Benny for alerting me to the JB sale :)

  • This would be perfect for me if it had Airplay 2 support, shame Pioneer havn't shown any interest in updating the firmware on their existing models to support it.

    • +1

I know nothing about Airplay but I do know from my neighbour that these seem to get OTA updates pretty frequently so… yes maybe?!

      • Awesome, i just found a Pioneer page saying the same thing: https://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/eu/news/pioneer-launches-… Thanks for making me look again!

        • I literally had a Marantz nr1508 arrive this morning, and kicking myself. There have been bugger all slimline receivers go on sale recently.

          • @tromboc: Don't feel bad, your Marantz is better spec'd. More powerful amp is one of them.

          • @tromboc: Your Marantz is so much better, it's literally in a different quality category to this one.

            • @pauliau: You see… everyone says this… but noone can really articulate why. There is an assumption that it is made with better components, or a better design, but noone can really articulate it to me, besides Marantz having a "better name" I guess… feature-wise, they appear almost identical. Are you able to elaborate?

              • @tromboc: Well for staters, just look at the speaker binding posts on the back. The Marantz is also a true Atmos receiver. It also has more than double the real world power output. The Pioneer is rated at “80W”, but that’s only driving a single channel at 6Ohm, at 1khz and only at a THD of 1%.

                • @pauliau: My Marantz NR1508 has no Atmos, puts out 60w at 6ohm, 1khz, 7% THD, has no phono pre, no Chromecast. And cost $300 more

Seems a lot of money to pay for better speaker terminals?

I know I am probably being very daft here, but besides it "surely" being better because it's Marantz, I don't get it.

                  Thanks for your input :)

                  • @tromboc: Sorry, I thought you had the nr1608 which is 7.1 and Atmos.
The 1508 power rating i’m seeing on Marantz site is 50W per channel: 8-ohm, 20Hz – 20kHz, 0.08% THD all channels driven. Not stated for 6 Ohm but it would be higher again. This would blow the Pioneer into the weeds. Also 6 HDMI ins and Dolby Vision support. But hey if you don’t want it, i’ll buy the Pioneer and we can swap if you want 😉

              • @tromboc: Wouldn't worry too much tromboc, your Marantz should give you just as much pleasure as the Pioneer. They are very different beasts though, both with their own pros and cons but neither being that much better than the other in real world terms. The main difference is the Tech… the Marantz is a traditional design using a regular iron core transformer and tried & tested transistors bolted to a heatsink in its output stage. The Pioneer uses a Switchmode power supply and full digital amplifier stages which increases efficiency and massively reduces size, weight and heat generation. I get just as much enjoyment from my analogue amps than I do from my digital amps and they vary massively in value across the board too. I've also had just as many issues repairing both types of amps too so yeah, apart from the price difference, the speaker terminals and the Phono input I doubt you'll notice any difference.

  • Got one thx!!!!!

Exactly what I needed. Something for home, not audiophile, feature rich, including chromecast.

Can anyone recommend any decent not too expensive speakers to go with this?

    • I've just paired a couple Dali Zensor 1 bookshelf speakers and a Polk 8" sub to my new slim receiver, the idea being to downsize from a huge old Denon 150w/ch beast with some big Aaron floor towers.

I don't miss them, I much prefer my new setup.

  • I like the form factor of this but the thing that concerns me is they say Dolby Atmos support on the JB HiFi page (albeit a poverty implementation of it). But then in fine print it says only after firmware update. I cant see any evidence of this firmware update being released, nothing on Pioneer support page either. No other web sites mention Atmos support on this receiver. Looks like a case of broken promises and false advertising to me??

Got mine yesterday from my local JB for $425 (ex-display)

  • Picked this up as well, lucky my local store had one, not that many around.

Anyone know what happens when listening to non Dolby Atmos movies when configuring the speakers for Atmos 3.1.2? How is Dolby Digital 5.1 decoded if I have sacrificed the rear speakers for overhead speakers?

    • I bought one too, and I'm planning the same 3.1.2 setup this weekend. Haven't taken out out of the box yet…

  • Hi Nom, how is your setup sounding?

    • Pretty good, I'm happy with it.
I didn't bother with Atmos in the end - I'm just using fronts and rears in a 4.0 setup.
It's smart enough to just route sound to the speakers that you do have.
