I've found most libraries around Victoria have this offer. Join kanopy with these library memberships and you will have plenty of free views each their movies each month as well.

    • +2

That's awesome. I never knew about it before

      • +1

Yeah ive fallen in love with public libraries again in recent times because of these things. They offer so much for the community already! <3

    • +1

      Great find!

OP - can you please add this into the deal?

    • +1

Not plenty, just 5 video credits per month. Which is still good. I have the app but have not viewed a single video till date. Very few interesting videos in there for me.

      • I meant if you add your multiple library memberships to the one kanopy account, you can switch between them and it adds up to plenty for me. Most give five views but i have one that have me 10 for some reason.

      • And yeah, the films, documentaries and videos are mostly quite niche and arthouse-y, but they can be useful for educators and others as well. I've seen a whole bunch of psychology videos around like how to teach kids with adhd in the classroom etc. Some mainstream cinema would be ok if you ran out of Stan or Netflix imo.

    • Yes, you are right @brotholemew. It's a duplicate …. Free Lynda deals through libraries has been posted here before.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199176

I been watching free Lynda.com videos since last 3 years through city of Melbourne library though I never visited the library. You can become a member online.

    • SA libraries offer Free access to "all" of Lynda.com's coursese but No Kanapy, I'm told.

A friend tells us that Whyalla (SA) Library:

      • has "Nuclear Science for Babies" (all that squeezed into 24 pages!)

but Refuses to buy or even accept (by donation):

      • "Nuclear Science Explained" ie: 24x ~30 min lectures (Excellent!)

(I know Nuclear Energy use is BANNED in AU,
but Liquid-Fuel (ie Fuel-Rod free) Nuclear
is fast coming to market (due~2029), we all
need to grok the Science "under the hood" &
      - hopefully - push our politicians to End
the Ban, so we will be able to benefit from

      Safe, Affordable, Green, High-Density Nuclear
Energy (both Heat & Power are available) a.k.a.

For everyone or just Victoria residents?

    • It asked me for my address. Not sure what happens if you put a non-Wyndham address in though.

      • can i use your address then? :)
we are one big ozb family anyway

        • Nahh not comfortable giving it out sorry. A few others are saying most councils are doing this too so maybe see if your local council is.

        • Just so it's known, library accounts will normally need to be verified by providing something like a driver's license or such at the library. The account will not be 'activated' until then (this is what I recall from my experience joining the local library).

    • +2

Library memberships are generally available for anyone living in that state.

      Edit: Not sure

Great use of a neg vote.

  • Got 'Permission denied' error when trying to log into Lynda using the temp barcode issued by the library:

Your authentication was successful. However, you do not have access to this resource. If you believe you have arrived on this page in error, please contact your organization or school's IT or help desk for further assistance.

    Will try again tomorrow.

I got that too. But worked after waiting for about 10 minutes.

      • It's working now :-)

  • Working for me, thanks OP. They actually have a sheetload of courses by the look of it

  • It's also free in SA by joining a library…

    • Lots of magazines for free available online also

    • DO you have a link ? Also any clue as to where the lynda pin is generated? I have a library card and password but not a pin?!?

      • The password is the PIN. I was confused like you, so I asked the librarian, tried it and it worked.

maybe need to wait 24 hours

    • It worked for me after about 10 minutes : )

People should just join their own local library. If all SA libraries provide access I wouldn't be surprised if libraries in other states and territories did too. Why inundate a library in a different area?

    • +1

why the negative vote? OP didn't suggest joining if you were in a different region

      • -1

Make it a general deal then, this just encourages people to join a library outside their area…

      • -4

Or would you prefer that single posts are made for every council library in Australia…

        • Report the post and a mod will amend. Voting negative is less likely to bring change.

          • -1

@tomsco: Report the invalid negative vote and mods do nothing. Why expect reporting will help?

            • @twocsies: Because with voting they very much want to avoid getting involved - their attitude is the community can decide (like the community revoked em's negative vote).

I've found they are very responsive to updating posts. Give them a bit of information, maybe a link to a couple of other libraries and they will update. Looks like in this case a power user changed it to Vic, but same idea.

          • +2

            @tomsco: I did report.

  • Been using Lynda through my local kingston libraray for a while now, very handy.

  • -2

Thought most OZBers knew about their local libraries provide free Lynda access. While it is good that OP reminds people about it (though honestly, a lot of people have Lynda access for years now), just don't want to see future posts for every single library allowing this in Australia.

  • -1

    What about in NSW?

    • Check you local council library. I'm lead to believe a number of libraries got together for a bulk deal on the access to various platforms. Blacktown library membership for instance, gives you access to BeamaFilm, PressReader and Lynda.com

      • Thanks for the heads up!

    • +4

There are quite a few libraries in NSW which offer free lynda courses

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/397100

  • +1

City of Melbourne has this too and should be easy to join: https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/community/libraries/create-…

  • Yarra Plenty Regional library has it in Banyule/Nillumbik region https://www.yprl.vic.gov.au/elibrary-learn/

  • +3

I remember in the news a while back a mobile meth lab was found behind one of the libraries in Wyndham. The residents were shocked. They didn't know there was a library in Wyndham.

    • +3

Just curious to find out what you are implying. A lot of Wyndham's residents are new arrivals to Australia — it isn't out of a lack of education that they don't know most things. Wyndham has a rate of educational attainment that is higher than Victoria's and Australia's in general (http://quickstats.censusdata.abs.gov.au/census_services/getp…). I did an assignment that required research on it last year and was quite surprised.

      • Maybe this year you can do an assignment on "the nuances of a joke" :)

        • +1

Sure. Will let you know how that works out.

  • This is a good thing

But the city libraries have even more to offer and they are free to join as well.

  • where do i get library card number

  • +1

    Available at most Public libraries.

  • Permission denied
Your authentication was successful. However, you do not have access to this resource. If you believe you have arrived on this page in error, please contact your organization or school's IT or help desk for further assistance.

    • Gotta wait for a bit before it gets approved

      • +1

What do you have to do after you wait? I tried this link last night and got this error. Tried again now and still the same.

        Edit:
Got it working: See my comment below.

  • Never used Lynda before. Are the courses any good? There is no user review or anything

    • its good, famous. some are expensive. you can tell from the comments here on this post.

  • +1

I needed this info thanks for sharing

  • Yarra Plenty Library has been offering this for years.

  • +1

For those of you getting the access/permission denied error:
I called the local library and found out that the account expires every 3 years. They reactivated my account over the phone and I am able to login now.

  • -3

how does this differ from the bazillion hours of videos and tutorials that can be found on youtube?

    • +3

These are much more professional & better structured.

And a lot easier to find what you're after.. also don't have to deal with the whole 'like and subscribe' pleas.

      • +2

That said, there are good youtube vids out there, just gotta know where to look

  • -2

It's a duplicate …. Free Lynda deals through libraries has been posted here before.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199176

  • Is it still working? I have signed with library. After activation linkedin says "your library don't have access"

    • +1

I just tried it now and was still able to log in(Although I'm with Melb library).

I think you're confusing the "libraryID" to your own ID

Linkedin Learning (formerly Lynda.com) is an online learning platform that has free courses on subjects like graphic design, video editing, animation, software and web development, business skills, and lots more. To start exploring, sign in with your library barcode and PIN. In the app you will be asked for a LinkedIn learning ID: enter "wyndham" (all lower case).

      https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/services/libraries/youth/stud…

      • Thanks mate. It works now. Cheers.

  • No love for nsw?

    • Try googling your local library with linkedin learning. I got a few hits when searching for "nsw library linkedin learning"
