What is a Chiko Roll? Processed beef and vegetables wrapped in a mixture of egg, flour and dough, which is then deep fried. A cultural icon, Chiko Rolls have been around since the 1950s in Australia, and the popularity at shows, sports events and carnivals shows no sign of slowing down. With around 1600 kilojoules each, 18 grams of fat and 1100mg of sodium, the Chiko Roll is a definite no-no. There are less fattening ways of being patriotic.

"There are less fattening ways of being patriotic"

Wait, what!? Eating a Chiko Roll is now a sign of patriotism? It's just a deep fried fast food. Get over it.

Don't think anyone is trying to be patriotic when they eat a chiko roll, does definitely hit the nostalgia tastebuds though. I bought a pack last time they were on special and I reckon they're pretty decent value for $2.60 the nutritional info you posted is a bit off probably accounting for it being deep fried. They're actually ~1300 kj, 9 grams of fat and 650mg of sodium. http://www.chiko.com.au/products/chiko-rolls

If anyone's interested in oven settings this worked pretty well for me, taken from WP- "Following the advice on there I put in the oven for 15 mins on 180, turned then put on for another 12 mins before raising up the heat to 230 degrees for the last 7 mins. When I pulled it out it was had turned a little brown but was quite crispy and was heated all the way through"

        • It'd be enough to cook it but I like it to be quite crispy

      • I agree, for $2.60 it is good, you get 4 chunky rolls. They do fill up quickly for a small person.

        My points are:

        (1) Cheap
        (2) Family Friendly
        (3) Occasional Snacks/late night snacks
        (4) Great Party food.

You can't ask more than that. Even 4 - 5-star hotels use frozen food for their appetisers.

      • Askmen is the usual sensationalist tripe created by an unpaid intern to put ads next to and promote through social media using a ridiculous headline.

You might call it harmful garbage for the mind.

    • I don't do anything out of patriotism, but if it comes with the package i'll take it

    • Compared to a lot of other equivalent style junk food i think a chiko role ain't that bad for ya calorie wise. 90c each worth it.

  • Was that chiko roll photoshopped in place of something else?

Must resist buying these - still have the can of spam in the cupboard that I bought for 1/2 price 6 months ago.

    • you dont need to stock them. SPAM discount is once per half month

    • …if you buy the chiko rolls you could make Spam, Spam, Spam, chiko rolls and Spam

  • Aren't they half price now at Safeway?

That was last week. Still got a freezer full.

      • …someone sure likes chiko rolls :D

        • It's a small freezer, not hard to fill it between these and half-price Zooper Doopers.

  • I want the girl on a motorcycle on the packaging, rip off

    • +1

      Deep fried.
