  • Is this soundbar different from the one in this deal, or they're the same?

    • They are the same I thought the B stood for Bluetooth, but if you click the official Yamaha link, you will see that the product code is ATS-1080, and the specs say bluetooth is onboard.

      • It appears you can get additional discount if you have bought eBay gift cards at discount.

      • I see. Looks like the B stands for black? I bought one from that previous deal and that was cheap compared to this deal.

        • Only one colour as far as I know. Yeah I just saw a cheaper deal end of last year. I will put that price in description

        • FWIW, the b is for black.

    • +1

      108 / 1080 / 1080B are all the same.
Likely given different model numbers to prevent you from asking retailers to 'match price', as they don't have the same model numbers. Printer manufacturers do the same thing.

  • I got the YAS-107 last year for $99.

There was a lot of hype and positive comments, but honestly, I really aren't very impressed.

Has that plastic kind of sound, like a UE Megaboom or something, as opposed to a clean HiFi sound.

All of the modes leave something to be desired, and the 'subwoofer' doesn't have much depth.

Much better than a tv speaker of course, and can't argue for the price, but kinda lame really and will probably sell it. Perhaps my expectations were out of check.

    • +1

I will have to disagree, it is leaps beyond a portable battery powered bluetooth speaker.
The settings on the soundbar and outputs from your device have to be set up properly.
I have no issues and very pleased with my YAS-106 which is identical in terms of physical specs.

      • 75% usage is Plex on Xbox One, they rest gaming on said Xbox or PS4. Optical and HDMI connections. Consoles set to Dolby Digital, uncompressed.

Soundbar doesn't have much in the way of settings really, does it? I installed the app. 3 surround modes, sub level, clear voice. All of these seem too vary in effectiveness (good/bad) depending on what I'm doing/playing, and I haven't been able to settle on a preferred config.

Mine sits on my entertainment unit facing upwards which may not be ideal.

Certainly not trying to prove you wrong and glad you're enjoying yours, I just can't get it to a level I'm happy with, give myself always tweaking it, and a lot of great audio equipment can be had for cheap these days.

        • +1

In my experience facing upwards sounds better than the wallmount position. Read my Forum post link in comment below, for further detail on how I use it and my experience.

    • The built-in subwoofer is essentially two 3 inch drivers. So you cannot expect the performance of a dedicated subwoofer.
I think its fine for music, but if you want that Cinema like sound for movies you can connect a powered sub through the sub-output on this soundbar.

      • Some people have bought 2nd hand Yamaha Powered subs from gumtree and are satisfied with the results.
Also here is a thorough appreciation & setup I wrote today about the YAS-106.

        • Ok cool thanks for this, I'll take a look.

        • I hooked my old sony sub up to mine and it really is great.

      • Yes definitely, it has to be appreciated in the context of what it is and I'm certainly not suggesting they're complete garbage.

Funnily enough, it's music where I really appreciate a full, balanced tonal range whereas with movies I'm much more lenient.

I myself do not understand surround sound. I have everything is set to output stereo, even when watching movies on the TV.
Ever hear of people complain in movies the speech is hard to hear, and the explosions are too loud? That only happens in the DSP with Surround.
The sound engineers dont bother with all that in the stereo audio track, its just all boring and good for simple people like me.

I'm a simple person, I hear the tiger, good. Its behind the right tree, ok whatevs.
I do not need to know the tiger is specifically behind me and to the left, or that the bird sounds are coming from above.
We are after all still looking into a 2D screen. Maybe with VR content in the future I can understand the surround sound model.

I have to disagree with you, I have YAS-108 and it is really good. Even bass is good but can't expect the levels of a dedicated woofer. Though "3D Surround" isn't great, I am impressed with "Surround".

  • Worth it for a first ever soundbar? Kind of over the shitty TV speakers.

    • I would say its a well made product for the price.
The next price bracket up is very similar build + subwoofer.
and the bracket above that is where you start getting more drivers (4-16 drivers) with more directional technology.
Right up to the $2500 YSP-5600BMK2 (which can do DTS:X, basically atmos not virtual X) with its 32 drivers in the soundbar.

But reviews say this top model still cannot supplement a real surround system.
And the conditions need to be perfect in order for it to even function.
(Nothing on the walls, exact precise placement/seating and measurements of room.
And these recommended sound reflectors they want you to buy and put on the left and right walls.)

I am interested still in how the 32 driver model sounds, just out of curiousity.

      • With the price including shipping being so close, I would go for the Yamaha brand and AU stock..

        • $16.92 shipping if you select the HK warehouse.

Yay first post/comment. Just quickly, I used ozbargain a lot to read through what people thought of this soundbar so wanted to share my experience for those in a similar position. Like most people looking for a soundbar in this price range, the two with the best reviews are the Yamaha ATS1080 (YAS 108B) and the Samsung m360. The only place I could find where I could direct compare them side by side was Good guys Essendon. They are both linked up. The Samsung is good, but the Yamaha is leaps and bounds ahead imo. Bigger, better and clearer sound with better bass. I also compared this model to the more expensive ones and while some of the others are obviously better, the price difference isn't worth it imo(at least not for me). I wasn't prepared to pay an extra 200+. I know nothing about soundbars and have never owned one but even I could hear the difference. Even the YAS 207 wasn't worth it cause for the extra price I can pick up a separate subwoofer down the track if I want to. Additionally, if you do a bit of research, the Yamaha ATS1080(YAS 108B) is outright the best rated soundbar under $300 on every website I've looked at. Not even just everyday people, but professional tech reviewers who listen to soundbars for a living have it as the editors choice.
