What Is The Definition of a "Bpay Equivalent Transaction"

I'm cycling through the various credit card introductory bonus points promotions. I've noticed the minimum spend criteria often excludes bill payments3 and bpay equivalent transactions. I've tried to find the definition of a bpay equivalent transaction, but to no avail.

Often council rates and various bills have a bpay option or a credit card option. The credit card option often incurs a small surcharge ~0.6% which i am happy to pay if it helps with meeting the minimum spend criteria, however, if it doesn't then there would be no real point for me to pay via the credit card.

Can anyone explain what a bpay equivalent transaction is and where the definition can be found?

Thanks

  • Post Billpay is an example of a BPay equivalent.

    • If i paid a bill over the internet (through the relevant biller's website such as council, electricity provider, RMS) using a credit card and incurred a surcharge while doing so, would that transaction count towards the minimum spend criteria?

      • That depends on whether government transactions are included, which things like council rates can often go under

    • Just curious, what is your source for this?

  • You should probably check with the card issuer(s) directly.

  • HI worf i have the same question would you mind sharing what you found?

    • No firm answer, technically council rates and ctp seem to be considered government transactions. However, some people have said they have been able to accrue points when paying such bills and use same towards the minimum spend criteria.

I need to spend $4000 to hit the ANZ minimum spend.

      • Buy many $100 Everywhere VISA card when on sale in Woolies. Use them to pay for council rates, energy bills, etc.

$5.95 card fee for 1000 points. You will lose a bit but it is safe to contribute card spend in Woolies first. Other giftcards are also OK if you need them.
