I know how to 'play' chess, but is it actually difficult to learn strategy and stuff? I would casually read guides and it just seemed like I had to remember moves which is too much for my little brain lol.

    • Just play, your mind will work stuff out as you go, however having a few pointers here and there won't hurt. Just enjoy the great game!

jayz beyond beginner level of chess it's way more than just remembering moves.

Over time the greatest players have learnt certain openings for both sides on black and white and many beginners try to imitate them but if you don't understand why you're doing a particular opening and what it's trying to achieve than you're in trouble. By the 6-7-8th move you've usually entered the mid game where you would need sound technical understanding of the game, and the end game..well there's no real way to 'remember moves' for the endgame as the position is probably so unique that it's moreso relying on critical thinking.

End of the day critical thinking and being sharp will always trump memory in chess.

If I could recommend an opening for white it could be Queen's Opening Gambit, for Black it would be the Sicilian Defense. As for a book, hands down the greatest chess book ever written (and you don't even have to like chess) is 'My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer' who was the US Chess Prodigy indicted by his own country, arrested in Japan after defeating the Soviets during the Cold War.

  • My favourite pass time, however this is going to distract me from my real studies lol

  • These look nice, at least from the cover. So many kindle books are throwaways from the get go based on the cover.

how long before the pc brigage come out and call chess racist for only having black and white, king and queen.

why not queen and queen! or a gender neutral king who sometimes identifies as a queen but most of the time a pawn.
