I picked this up earlier in the week for this price as I needed something small for camping.
Wasn't 100% sure what the normal prices of these are, but glad you've posted it up.

Looking forward to giving it a test run over Australia Day!

How’s the size ? How many cans can this hold ?

      • 11L I guess. The Esky brand 10l Esky holds 11. I have it and it's not bad but any more than 1 picnic you are screwed

  • I would like to buy a portable fridge at 30L or so. Now I have a 40L one but seems a bit large for me.

    • You could get 3 of these

      • Good idea. But then I found thermocooler is different from portable fridge.

    • Put some bricks in it.

Have thermocoolers improved over the last 10 years? I used to have one in my van to keep my lunch and drinks cool, it was OK - but nothing great. ie/ Room temp items never got cold, COLD items were still acceptably cool by lunch time.

I have an 15L Engel thermocooler and to be honest it doesn't seem to be that great. It seems to keep cans cooler than ambient temperature but that's about it.
You can pick these up for about 50% of their RRP on Gumtree.

Unless the technology has improved remarkably over the last few years, you'll probably find these are almost useless. They use a peltier instead of a compressor (like a normal fridge), and at best will be lucky to maintain an items original temperature , at worst spoil your food. Honestly, I believe a vacuum insulated water bottle would keep drinks cooler.

Seriously an ice esky is a million% better too.

Interesting neither the eBay or Supercheap site show the current draw. My only experience, with one I purchased over 10 years ago, with this type of cooling is that they draw multiple times what a compressor fridge does, even for such a small unit.

Edit: point being - when connected to a car battery, don't leave them on for long periods or you'll know about it!

    • I think my big peltier one was 70watts, but was useless really.

Do your research before getting one of these - they suck a lot of Amps and run constantly.
As mentioned multiple times these are not fridges - but a thermocooler.
Keeps cold items coldish but can also heat items too.

  • Seems like it got a good review? And claims 20 degrees under ambient.

"I used this over the Christmas break when doing a 5 our road trip up and back, it worked a treat! A warm 6 pack of Cider was ice cold upon arrival! I gifted one for Xmas also, with great response. The only thing it needs is some sort of anchor point for the seat belt to go through to have it sit more securely in the middle on the back seat. The seat belt can sit around it though - it just slips down frequently. Certainly not a reason not to purchase though"

  • I have a Waeco Thermocooler and they're ok. They will keep your milk cold enough for a trip. The SCA rep advised me not go with the ridge riders as he had a few come back etc

The only advantage of thermo is that they can also keep food warm. Also its 20-30 below ambient so the car has to be cool as well. I generally put it on the floor and turn the AC to the feet setting. I also throw in a small ice pack to prime it.
