This looked interesting but I really need one that will also work with Venison and Duck

Damn, I'm looking for a meat thermometer that I can use with duck and/or kangaroo. The search continues.

    Edit: Beaten. ;)

  • What about things that aren't meat like vegetables and tofu?

lol why do you need a temperature reading for veg

    Woolworth math… 1/2 price!

    • 1/2 squared.

  • Just out of interest, while I understand the importance of one for safety and cooking results, do many of you actually use a thermometer?

I imagine many people eat red meat rare or "whatever" on the inside and OzBargainers buy pre-cooked chicken for half price at 10 pm.

It's useful for those "manufactured roasts" common these days. And Thankstaking dinners.

    • Very very useful for cooking roasts.

Though with all the sous vide sales I suspect a fair few of us (me included) just use a sous vide and cut out the thermometer bit. You don't need to keep an eye on meat with sous vide as it all gets cooked perfectly. Just needs a bit of a sear at the end.

      • Yep, agree with you re SV. But when I'm doing a roast in the oven / on BBQ, I use a Maverick digital thermometer - works perfectly, and since it has a remote (with alarm) too, I can wander off and do other stuff while waiting to hit the target temperature.

    • Only required when you are cooking $149 wagyu

      • Funnily enough, I had a Waygu steak from Aldi the other week, (can't recall the price per kg, but it certainly wasn't $149, it was very reasonable), and it was fantastic - and yes, I used my Maverick to ensure it was perfect.

    • Yes, especially for chicken or for roasts.
Take guesswork out of picture - so not under or over-cooked.
Very useful, if meat is direct from freezer/fridge.

    • I do. However I do recommend an instant read over a dial thermometer. But then you have to deal with batteries so…. anyway yes it's very handy for perfectly cooked meat rather than random feels and looks to determine cookedness.

  • $1.50 you can't go wrong.

Bought one, thanks OP! I find it’s pretty good quality.
