NBN Wants to Drill Holes All over My Apartment

I had a chat with the strata manager who told me that NBN need to install new cables to each unit.
Therefore NBN will drill holes from the electricity room (where the street fibre cable ends) to each units.
They will drill through every floor in the building (4 in total) to the floor common area, from there it will be split into each unit front doors, which then will be taken over by the ISPs, whom will drill the wall into the inside of the unit.

I was shocked with so much drilling involved, and how ugly and messy it will look. I can't understand why they can't use the existing Foxtel cables or Telephone (Cat6).

I am campaigning for another alternative, even if it means ditching Foxtel forever (who needs them anyway when you have NBN). I'm not very techy, do you know if it is the only solution?

Edit: The plans from the nbn check address site showed that it is using HFC network.

TLDR: NBN wants to install new cables (hfc) inside the building and therefore need to drill holes through every floor and walls to each unit.

You don't know sht about me friend and don't think a meaningless comment on a forum says anything about me. Have a good day.

        • Cool

  • We recently had NBN HFC installed in our apartments and they simply ran the cable from the roof into the service shaft of each apartment. Do you not have a service shaft?

  • Didn't know phone cables were Cat6

    One hole seems reasonable though

    • They are whatever is cheap at the time. New installs must be Cat5 or better (Cat5=the old Cat5e standard)

There is no improvement with Cat6 for PSTN or VDSL. There is for Ethernet (higher frequencies)
PSTN and VDSL only use two of the copper wires. You can join the wires at each end to improve the signal, but that also increases the noise (crosstalk), so is only useful in very specific situations.

  • you should be happy that you got offered hfc over ftn.

    • You can tech choice your way out of FTN to FTTP, sure it might cost $20k, but you can do it. If you get HFC you're stuck.

  • Resist all change!!!!

  • You have no choice. The phone lines are being disconnected to make way for the NBN. NBN are also using the Foxtel cables to get the cables into your apartment. I would have though it would have been a bit more straight forward since you already have Foxtel in the complex, but obviously not. Try getting HFC underground into your house. We had to battle 6mths for it. If we wanted it through the overhead Foxtel lines we would have had it sooner. The issue for us was I didn't want the ugly wires going into our house. Didn't want the possum freeways into our roof space. The NBN installers also randomly install the overhead cables in random and ugly sections. ie why would you run an overhead wire centrally to the front of the house, or half way up the roof with a pole, and install the NBN box where you can see it at the front. Once its in its not like you can get them moved again.

In OPs position. Just let them install the cables, but see if you can get them to cable it in your apartment where its not so obvious. Also you want it where you have a central area for the Wifi to work or close to your computer ideally. IMO

  • I am facing the same issue as yours, wanted to check how you solved it?
