Sounds too good to be true..

Don't waste your time and money. It won't be an enjoyable trip for this kind of price.

I've travelled several times on heavily discounted deals before (including with this agent TripADeal) to India, China, Antarctica and Sri Lanka) and they've all been great.
Like any deal/contract, you need to read the inclusions and exclusions carefully and be aware that sometimes there are extra costs depending on what state you are flying from, whether you want to do extra activities or excursions to the ones offered etc. Some of my heavily discounted deals in the past have included tipping, some haven't. With this deal, it's an extra.
I must admit that on my first heavily discounted deal, I was a bit worried how it was going to turn out, but I was extremely happy with the tour and the guide, hence I've been on several more of these heavily discounted tours and I'm looking at booking another later this year.
I'm heading off to China on my second trip with TripADeal in March.
Like cheap flights, they sometimes offer heavily discounted tours (sometimes below cost) as it's better to get some money in than have a half-empty plane/tour bus.

Yes would like to know about Alaska cheap trip deals

          • +1

@CyberMurning: Try booking through Vacationstogo in the US. In my experience they are quite a lot less than the cruises in Australia. Some cruise lines won’t sell to Aussies through this site though. We went with Princess and booked through them for thousands less. It’s typically more expensive to fly to Vancouver than to say Seattle. Cruises to Alaska leave from both ports but make sure you go on one that goes further than Skagway. You need to go through to Anchorage to see the glaciers. All the ports before that are really tiny places with tons of tourist shops. Also, don’t pre-book tour excursions - you can get them all at the the dock or arrange privately beforehand - you’ll save a fortune.

          • @CyberMurning: ChiMot, I subscribe to a few online travel agents including Webjet Exclusives, TripaDeal, TravelZoo and Scoopon.
Good timing, I got an email from TripaDeal about a 14 day trip to Alaska/Canada for $3,999 including flights and a cruise. It ends in 4 days. Here's the deal including the inclusions and exclusions…. https://www.tripadeal.com.au/deals/1881-14-day-alaska-canada…

            • @davebern: Thanks. Will do some research First. Other member said to get cruise that "go further than Skagway. You need to go through to Anchorage to see the glaciers. "

$7,999 including all flights, cruise ship, tours, accommodation, gratuities and most meals.
Apart from the cruise to Antarctica, the itinerary included tours to Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands.
          It was for 21 days.

@davebern: not bad . for once in a lifetime experience $8k. its alot but well, we live once.

@wittyusername: I went to Antarctica/South America with Webjet Exclusives in January 2018. I also got a heavily discounted internet deal with Webjet Exclusives to India. Everything about both trips was great, including the guides.

Just imagine how many "jade shops" you'll be visiting at this price.

A hint to this is the single supliment of $390! Essentially compensating the tour company for the commissions (on food, tours, retail purchases) they won't be making from that extra person.

I've spent many months in China over numerous visits, I've always travelled independantly with the exception of a 3 day tour (side trip) I once took. From that experience I know how "snarky" the tour guides get when you sit in the bus when they stop at a commissioned tourist gift shop.

I think you'll find it's like any trip, 2 people usually share a room so single supplement means you get your own room for one person. You can always share with a random but I wouldn't risk it.

I'd read reviews to understand the amount of tourist traps/hidden costs built into the itinerary

  • Price only available in March

These type of Tours are good for first-time visitors. Just make sure that your Return Flight is booked at a later date and do your own travels after the Tour finished.

Use the Tour to mainly familiarise yourself with the surroundings and get over the Culture Shock.

Even if this is shopping tour, it's not hard to not buy anything, right?

    • +3

2 hours at a jade "factory" masquerading as something tourism related. Doors locked until sales target met.

    • Depends on person buying. Many dodgy sales people using dodgy techniques, including lying and making false claims to secure the sale.
Even if you find out you were scammed later, what can you do? Nothing.

      • Agree. Best is just don't buy. Or spend just tiny so please them for example buy tea bags. Yes they might be worth less but you loose a little compare with buying a $1000 jade for example. And agree they lie lie and lie…

        • I've been on a tour before where we were taken to a store selling their "famous" medicine. The look on the woman's face when she realised that we don't buy her bs and can't be persuaded. They've definitely been well trained, its their job. Not easy for a gullible soft person imo.

  • If you live in syndey the trip will cost you - $599 + 120tips = $719 approx.
If you live in Melbourne the trip will cost you closer to $800, less if you can get cheap flights

    • +8

If you live in Melbourne, you could just drive to Box Hill to visit China. No need to spend $800 per person to catch a flight.

      • different smell, biao.

      • If you live in Sydney you can just walk out your front door.

        • not nice…

what if you live around Punchbowl/Greenacre

    Buyer beware…I wouldn't exactly call Holiday Inn Express a 4-star hotel…

    • +1

Actually, Holiday Inn in Shanghai is quite good. The one we stayed at is close the the railway, the food was good, staff were great. Shops, bank & food places close by. Only complaint was that I could not get the AC to go under 28C. 3C outside, but 28 was far too hot in the room.

If you haven't been to China before, change your money there. Far better FX rate. Don't matter where there it's changed, the rates are the same. The machines in the hotels or at the airport are the same rates as the banks.

      Haungpu cruise is good.

      • Did you stay at Holiday Inn, or Holiday Inn Express? I have stayed at both, and the reason why I have is because I was originally booked into HIE, however my first night there was so horrible that I eventually cancelled my booking and re-booked into HI.

      • I was puzzled that Holiday Inns are wildly inconsistent. Then I realised that they are awesome when they are new, but then are left for 20 years with nothing more invested, no refurbishment or update.

I wonder if these are the same trips that are co funded by the Chinese government. A few years back, we did a similar trip for 100$ a head for 5 or 6 days which included all food and accommodation. All accommodations was with 4-5 star hotels. All you had to do was pay for the flights separately.

Very good value and very enjoyable. They did take you to shops etc, but absolutely no obligation to buy. The tour guide also said so and infact advised us to go else where which was about 70% cheaper. Some of the shops do however take you through a tour of how they manufacture their goods which was informative and interesting.

    • They are definitely Gov funded. Depending on demand, sometimes they reimburse you for going on the tour i.e. free tour incl flights paid for.

      • Correct. The more you go, you can bargain with the tour agent.
