  • I’m having this issue where I am unable to edit my older posts, (some less than 15 days old.)

    • Node editing is locked after 14 days by default, if you need to edit after that please use the report button.

      • Oh I did not know that, Thanks for letting me know.

Also: I think it should be 20 or 30 days before it’s locked.

        • We'll review/discuss increasing it to 30 days.

          Thanks

Edit 6/1/20: Now changed to 30 days.

  • Ozbargain website error in visual rendering

Please see https://imgur.com/a/bYXwayT . This is from clicking on vote on 13/12/2019 - 15:01 comment. Notice the beige and white content extending past the right hand edge of the rectangle box.

I am running Firefox Version 71.0, Build ID 20191202093317 on Windows 10. Also confirmed with Google Chrome Version 79.0.3945.88 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Anyone else confirm this visual rendering error?

Same here running Safari on an iPad Air (iOS 12.1.1).

Looks like it's browser/computer independent. It seems to be caused by a long user name extending the dropdown body past the title bar when there is also a country-posting-from-flag in the body. Note that without the flag, WoodYouLikeSomeCash renders fine, as can be seen from the voting dropdown in this comment.

If the names are short enough, the flags don't cause an issue. (See this comment.) Not sure what the minimum length is for the user name to cause a problem, but I suspect it's when it's long enough such that it's displayed below the avatar instead of inline with it, or maybe that length plus the width of the avatar.

        Thanks for the mention :)

        • So the solution would be to limit the space that text to use and replace it with … perhaps? Example is WoodYouLikeSo…

Should’ve looked at the code before posting. Looks like the issue is caused by the drop-down “votes” tool-tip having a fixed width of 300px. Whether or not there is a country-posting-from-flag in the tool-tip body is irrelevant. All that matters is if the sum of the maximum widths of all the fields of the table in the body is greater than that 300px.

The proper solution is quite simple - no need to upset WoodYouLikeSomeCash 😉 Simply change the tool-tip’s div’s inline style from

        <div id="tooltip" style="width: 300px; display: block; left: #px; top: #px;">

        to

        <div id="tooltip" style="width: 300px; display: table; left: #px; top: #px;">

        scotty?

PS @scotty - Why is the id of the tool-tip’s body’s div tooltip-copy instead of tooltip-body?

        • display: table

Tooltip popup is used for many places other than showing tables, and we do need deterministic width in some cases especially on mobile where I don't want the #tooltip to expand over the edge of the screen.

          tooltip-copy

I guess "copy" means a document? Most of the time content inside the tooltip is loaded from a HTTP request.

Back to the initial issue. In the case when the width of the content is bigger than the container — you either expand the container (which makes the width non-deterministic) or automatically adds a scrollbar. Neither are ideal.

Or just put up with it :)

  • Where is the 2020 thread?

  • Multiple Accounts Per Household

I think there should be the ability to have multiple accounts per household OR 1 account with multiple users (example: like the Netflix login page) where each user can set a pin/password. All accounts within the household won’t be able to vote on each other’s comments, deals, etc.

    • Only 1 account is permitted per person but there is no issue with having households with multiple users and thus multiple accounts. EDIT: And of course, don't vote on each others deals/comments/etc.

      • Thanks for your response.

      • Hello again,

I had another think about this and I believe there should also be a maximum of 4 users per account (stops there being heaps of spam accounts.)

        • a maximum of 4 users per account

How would you know, unless all 4 are logged in at the same time?

          • @spackbace: I was meaning as in 4 user accounts. Not as in 4 people online at one time.

            • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: So you want 4 per household, but neil said it's unlimited… Is that right?

              • @spackbace:

So you want 4 per household, but neil said it's unlimited… Is that right?

In neil’s comment he never stated once “unlimited”, I said later about the 4 person limit as I think it should be a rule associated with the suggestion.

                • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash:

but there is no issue with having households with multiple users and thus multiple accounts.

Since we don't put a street address in anywhere, how do they know you're not at a workplace, or multi-storey building.

And don't say by ip, because many people just access on mobile internet, not wifi. Even then, multiple users at a workplace - how do you distinguish between that and a home?

                  • @spackbace: Or ISPs like Aussie Broadband have CGNAT so many users are behind one IP4 address.

                  • @spackbace:

And don't say by ip, because many people just access on mobile internet, not wifi.

Each time someone registers they are required to register on wifi and not mobile connection.
For example if I tried to make an account on my phone using Optus I would be presented with an error meaning the account would not be created, however, if I tried to register using my Wi-Fi connection it would work as it is able to associate an IP with the account.

I hope that answers your question.

                    • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash:

Even then, multiple users at a workplace - how do you distinguish between that and a home?

                      • @spackbace: As I’m not a Moderator I don’t know how they/they would distinguish between the two, but I am sure they would have their methods of doing so, I suggest you ask a moderator for the answer to that question,

                        Thanks.

                        • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: I don't need to, 1 of the main people behind the site said multiple accounts in the same household is fine. Not sure why you'd need/want to limit the number, since mods have many ways of detecting and banning spam and ghost accounts.

An auto-limit per ip is just going to cause more issues than it's worth.

Besides, most spam accounts just use vpns anyway, particularly to make them look like they're in the country, when they're not. And also so their main ip doesn't get banned/blocked (or they use the vpn once the main ip gets flagged)

                          • @spackbace: I think you have misinterpreted my first comment let me rephrase it for you:

I think there should be the ability to have 1 account with multiple users (example: like the Netflix login page) and there should be a maximum of 4 users that can be added on the 1 account.

                            Thanks.

                            • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash:

I think you have misinterpreted my first comment

You keep using 'accounts' differently each time:

I believe there should also be a maximum of 4 users per account (stops there being heaps of spam accounts.)
I was meaning as in 4 user accounts. Not as in 4 people online at one time.
there should be a maximum of 4 users that can be added on the 1 account.

To which begs my first question:

How would you know, unless all 4 are logged in at the same time?

                              • @spackbace: So you have 1 account and like Netflix you can add “users” after you have added 4 users you can’t add anymore (which means there is a limit of 4 users) this is what I think should happen with OzBargain Accounts.

                                • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: And then they just create another account in the same way they do now…
Would be more convenient for families, but it won't do anything to stop spam. At all.

                    • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash:

Each time someone registers they are required to register on wifi and not mobile connection.

Side note, I questioned that, and this is the answer I got from mods:

Not true, you can register on any IP address from any connection, as long as it's not blacklisted on ozbargain or stopforumspam.

  • Meritocracy not seniority - classified posting licence/privilege

This is in relation to 8 February 2019 [Guideline Update]: Members less than a year old are no longer allowed to post in the classifieds area.:

This reduces the marketplace unnecessarily. I know this was posted nearly a year ago but please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Classified posting privileges/licences should be based on merit and not seniority. Perhaps only those who have a Contributor Badge which requires 15 or more deals with 5 votes or more can be allowed. If someone can do 1 deal a week that would take 4 months to get privileges. The fact you need 5 or more votes for each deal will ensure high quality as well.

Even contributor badge might be too strict so maybe 5 posts with votes 5 or more comments. It might be easier to check if a user has contributor badge then this finer request though.

    What does everyone think?

    • 8 February 2019 [Guideline Update]: Members less than a year old are no longer allowed to post in the classifieds area.
From investigating reports of fraudulent activity in classifieds, we have noticed that quite a number of new users who post bad quality deals just meet the requirement to post in the classifieds area 6 weeks later. We have now decided that everyone posting in the classifieds area needs to be a member for at least one year, regardless of whether they have posted a deal or not. As of this morning, the system should automatically stop users less than 1 year old from posting. Ref

As you know, it was previously merit based, but overseas scammers took advantage of this, so we had to remove it. That 15 deal/5 vote requirement would make it more difficult, but not a serious barrier, we found these accounts to be incredibly determined and that would be unlikely to deter them. We won't take any chances with encouraging fraudsters back on OzBargain, it's a risk to users and a serious drain on moderators who had to check accounts and deal posts everyday 1 by 1 when this was happening to make sure none got through.

You are welcome to disagree/discuss further, but that is the situation, we did not remove that requirement by choice or in haste.

      • we found these accounts to be incredibly determined

Does that mean we can expect a marked increase in fraudulent activity come 8 February 2020, with a ramping up leading up to that date? (Has it started already?)

Mod reply: We are pretty confident that we banned/caught all those users, but we can't be 100% sure, so yes there is still a slightly increased risk of fraudulent activity after or even slightly before that time.
