Why Get Recharge Vouchers as Opposed to a New Cheap Sim Starter?

Why don't people get multiple sim starters when they're on special as opposed to getting more expensive recharge vouchers. Recharge vouchers are hardly ever discounted and even when they are discounted, they don't seem to to come close to the benefits of a cheap sim starter.

People's thoughts on this would be nice, thanks.

  • I thought you can't port your old number to a new sim with the same telco?
Though I guess you could buy a bunch of sims with 2 or more companies and rotate through them.

Potential port in/out issues and the annoyance of switching sims every month. Though im sure there are some people one here dedicated enough to do it if you have the time.

My last monthly port took 30 minutes…

      • Depends on carrier as well.

Same telco would mean a different number each time
For ports, no ports on Sunday, provisioning errors and churn which they might eventually get sick of?

  • Welcome to OzBargain. It's definitely a good way to save money.

I think time and potential issues in porting back and forth, I mean if you port to Optus it would be a nightmare with their CS if an issue. Would you actually save that much in the end. Probably a little, for actual gains.

Monthly mobile spend $1 …Great saving, very little effort.

Can't port to the same telco, the pain of doing a port/creating a new service each month.

Some people are just not that tight and don't want the hassle.

You can, you just do a 'sim replacement' aka 'sim-swap' . I've been paying less than 20% for all my credit for over a year now .

      • Technically it's not porting if it's on the same telco, since it's a SIM replacement. But yes, I also do exactly this. Buy Optus $30 starter packs for $5 and replace every 28 days.

        • Can you elaborate more and is it workable with all providers or just some.TIA

@RockyRaccoon: With Telstra it would be a matter of activating a new SIM card with a new number. You then disconnect your old number and do what they call a Change FNN. You change the new number to the old disconnected number. It’s a few steps and considered a PITA.

Seriously sounds like a PIA and not worth the 'saving' to me.

            • @ilostnemo: Thanks,I think the Belong referral system is a little easier. Less PsITA's

        • Also works with other prepaid 'plans' ie . I am on more expensive plan, So I just sim-swap (adds $30) sim-swap again (adds another $30) until I have amount I need.
I'm on one of those $3 day things, so $90 a month is what I need.
Important, each $30 credit only last 30 days , so make sure you don't add more than 30 days worth.

          • @[Deactivated]: Oh how come? That's 3 times as expensive.

            • @ronnknee: Unlimited data ;) $15 month unlimited calls, text, data . Unlimited data saves me having to have home broadband, for my streaming needs (netflix, stan, prime Tv, 9now etc)

Even better to have an employer that provides a phone and sim

A bunch of us do exactly this.

  • I’m pretty sure The telcos are realising this and that’s why lately they are now
offering data banking and also big data bonuses for your first x recharges.

I know Telstra are offering a bonus 110 gb for your first 5 recharges.
