      It depends on the post office, but I've had no refusals for the past 4 passport photos and they were all done this way.

        pharmacy should redo them for free…

        I had to edit mine with Photoshop before the post office would accept them…

          the Post Office tried repeatedly to refuse my within-specifications photos.
          then, took my application fee but on the application itself, made a small note (on recommendation of the manager),
          before submitting my passport application.
          1-week later, passport office called me to say they reject my photo.
          no real reason, but they kept insisting that the photo was from not the Post Office.

          eventually, i had to fork out AU$ 17+ for 4 x passport photos from the Post Office.

          ( usually, you can get them for AU$ 0.05 for passport photos from Big W, Harvey Norman, etc. )

              @pinkybrain: at the end of my experience, i felt like that.

              i think they're some kind of franchise now,
              or Post Office staff must have sales targets to meet,
              because i have noticed many post offices in Sydney (and i have been to many),
              where my honest questions were usually met by advice/suggestions which was always to spend money in their store.

              about 10 - 15 years ago, i used to get advice from staff which didn't involve selling me something.

                  @pinkybrain: most CEO salaries are atrocious, especially finance industry.

                  however, in AusPost case, i heard that the ex-CEO turned around a loss-making business into a profitable one.

                  my issue is, some services in a country, should be a basic right of the citizen of a country,
                  where being citizen of the country should come first, and not be seen as a paying customer.

                  it's like the U.S. way of seeing a person (in order of priority) as:
                  1) a consumer
                  2) a tax-payer
                  3) a citizen, with can have expectations of basic services (health, school, electricity / water, postal services, etc… what is left to privatise to companies that operate outside of your own jurisdictions & eventually outside the laws of your own country that you pay taxes for)

        That should be fine as long as you follow the guidelines…

        Good quality, colour gloss prints, less than six months old
        Clear, focused image with no marks or 'red eye'
        Plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face
        Uniform lighting (no shadows or reflections) with appropriate brightness and contrast to show natural skin tone
        Face looking directly at the camera and not tilted in any direction
        Hair off the face so that the edges of the face are visible
        Eyes open, mouth closed
        Neutral expression (not smiling, laughing or frowning), which is the easiest way for border systems to match you to your image.

      At 10c per print at OW versus the exorbitant $17 AP charges for the same thing, I’m more than happy to spend a few lunchtimes at the counter. Each time they reject the photo I’d ask them exactly why they are not willing to accept it.

          Did you ask them which particular specification your photos were not compliant with?

          Given that there is no requirement for passport applications to include a post office-issued photo, simply saying the photo wasn’t from the post office wouldn’t cut the mustard with me. That reasoning alone isn’t a non-compliance.

            but they would always preface the conversation with "who took this picture?"
            they always wanted to establish the fact, the Post Office did not take the pictures.

            when the passport office called, i told them that the photo was within specification.
            they said it was 'too grainy' to be used as a passport photo,
            but before this, they still asked me "who took this picture?"

              @whyisave: My answer would’ve been that that is not relevant to the application, and to confirm the rejection of my passport application in writing stating that excuse.

              Then, take a reprint of that same photo to a different PO.
              Also never tell them that you took the photos yourself.
              You can tell them it was done by a pharmacy for example, but asking me that question would’ve netted a rough response to whoever was on the other side of that call.

              I take it that you saw them making a note on your application? That’s when I would’ve asked for it back.

                so you would have inspired me to be more assertive and defiant.

                i thought i was already being defiant, but within their rules, when i submitted my own, properly taken photos on a Sony RX100 camera (high quality)

                3 x different tellers at the Post Office [PO], tried to sway me in paying AU$ 17+ for their photos
                1) initial visit to enquire about passports & forms ("let us take the photo")

                2) first visit with forms + photos ("who took this photo?" "no. head is too big, according to the stencil. let us take the photo")

                3) second visit with forms + modified photos ("who took this photo?". didn't even apply the stencil but took my money for the application. then, with doubt, went inside the Post Office to get the manager. manager appeared and asked "who took this photo?". a few murmurs between themselves, into their ears, and manager instructs the teller, to leave a small scribble on my application AFTER it was already accepted. i couldn't understand the scribble but it obviously was some kind of 'code')

                Passport office called me, 1-week later.
                "who took the photos?"
                I answered "Myself", but i said the application was within specifications.
                Passport office says photo is "too grainy" to be accepted.

                and yes…you know the rest… PO 1 - 0 Me (with respect to AU$ 17 for the photo and AU$ 400+ for a long-term passport)

                i really should have asked them for a rejection, in writing and ask them to state their reasons, etc.

                and yes, i could have tried a different PO after that and i could have just said a Pharmacy took the photos (creative story-telling)

                i was trying to beat them on the principle that forcing people to take AU$ 17+ photos is wrong,
                but at the end, i caved to what seems to be their co-ordinated efforts against me.

                  @whyisave: Interesting.
                  For all our passport applications (family), I took photos at home (Canon) and edited them in photoshop (to the required specifications) and took prints (glossy) at BigW (12 or 15 cents). None of the photos were rejected by passport office (first set of applications) or post office (renewals).

                  Next time try telling them that you took the photos at a reputed shop, and see if they respond otherwise.

      Yeah I just play it safe and always get the photos done at the post office itself.
      That way even when they make shitty low quality photos they will still accept it.
      I know it costs a lot and I am sure I am getting ripped off but it saves my time and effort.

        saving "your time and effort" is the problem,
        when it's our time and effort to reduce corruption, unfairness in consumerism.

    I always take pics and use https://www.epassportphoto.com/ to edit them to the size you need to print. A bit of a photoshop to not waste the photopaper with their ads, and you are done. Did this numerous times in the past 10 years and never been rejected.

      Same here. Done multiple US, Aus and UK ones using this website for 10 years. Free and probably easier than any app

      A couple of times I’ve had to photoshop out a shadow but it’s so easy and now I know the process (10 passports between us all in the family) it’s pretty smooth.

      Once I did pay auspost for the baby one, purely because it was urgent. The photo they ended up using was so over saturated and bright it looked nothing like her, ridiculous.

    Would the photos we print be as good as the photos proper photo shops print?

    I always assumed there was some difference, maybe the chemicals degrade much fater or something…?

      I don’t think the photos that end up on your passport are the actual printed ones you’ve submitted. They’re a digital version and look like crap anyway which is why I’m not sure why aus post is so fussy (other than to make $$$)

    Not that it makes the process any less frustrating, but I believe the passport office hold AP offices accountable if they send too many applications in with incorrect parameters. Not sure how - maybe it affects turn around time for that site, or they pay some fine? But that’s one of the reasons why they prefer to do it themselves, with even lighting, white backdrop, standard camera, set distance etc.
